Then there should be a different event, the October Minute Challenge. The people who want to focus on run times can do that one.

Also, I feel that Nightmares and Dreamscapes should be allowed to be counted. But as one title, just like all the other King mini-series.
But why should MOH count as separate titles and N&D as one title. It's basically the same premise: Several 1 hour stand alone episodes with separate storylines and characters. It's not like The Storm or Storm of the Century where the miniseries continues with one storyline.

Why does everyone get so worked up over something that's supposed to be fun? I did this for the first time last year (got sick for a while and didn't do that well), and while I assumed I'd participate again this year, reading this thread makes me wonder if I should just do it on my own. I thought there would be rules set and that would be the end of the bickering.

I thought we were discussing, not bickering. Some things just need a little clarification.

I've already stated that I plan to watch numerous non-horror Halloween shows. I just won't "count" them.

technically, the episodes are 42 minutes (sans the commercials) which makes it eligable for inclusion.

I don't necessarily see it as bickering. OwlAtHome brought-up a legitimate question that wasn't clearly defined in the rules and people are simply giving their two cents. It's actually been reasonably calm up to this point when compared to last year's somewhat controversial thread! Trust me, by the time October rolls around the dust always settles and the fun begins.

Ah, yes, I forgot that these were made for broadcast TV so they are indeed shorter.

Unless the DVD has extened versions, I guess that answers that question.

actually if you go with Amazon's running time of the DVD to 378min - each episodes rounds out to 47 minutes. imdb rounds up the episodes to 60 minutes each.

Okay, to be fair, maybe bickering was the wrong word. Chad, I still remember last year's thread well, which may be why I was quick to call it "bickering." In any case, I just hope we can all agree on a set of rules and get on with it already.

I thought the rules were already established.

They are for the most part, it seems. It's just that Nightmares and Dreamscapes seems to have thrown a monkey wrench in the works. lol

My own opinion is that while Masters of Horror was created as standalone movies, Nightmares was meant to be part of an anthology event, so I personally would count the whole thing as one title. I think whatever rules pertain to other anthology titles like Twilight Zone or Tales From the Crypt would apply to this series. But this is a tricky one so I don't really know a definite answer. I'd be fine with whatever the popular opinion is here. I don't own it anyways so I doubt I'll be having to worry about how to count it next month anyways. lol

Concerning this year's prize...

Quick change of subject: I'm sure everyone remembers that ViewAskewbian was kind enough to offer a copy of "The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari" DVD to the winner last year. This year I'll be offering a $25 Amazon GC to the overall winner. Anyway, I was thinking if a couple more of you would be willing to contribute a DVD or just whatever, we could have prizes for the 2nd and 3rd place winners this time around. And obviously that person(s) would be responsible for sending it to the intended recipient.

Nobody here should feel any obligation whatsoever. I'm simply saying if anyone has a DVD (preferably a horror title!) or anything lying around that would make a suitable prize that you're willing to part ways with...it would be much appreciated. If not, no big deal.

I'll give it a shot. Last year I only got around 10, I think. Hopefully I'll reach bit more this year.

That's an awesome prize Chad.
I was quite pleased to receive The Cabinet of Dr Caligari from ViewAskewbian last year. In fact, I actually intend to kick this year's Challenge off with that title.

In the spirit of it being a "challenge" rather that a contest: I suggest that, beyond the top prize, there are a couple of prize winners randomly drawn from the pool of people who reach 100. Or perhaps, within that pool, one for the person who (in Chad's judgement) has the most interesting viewing list. That would be a little closer to the spirit of the event, where everyone who gets 100 has met the goal and it's about the films, not competition.

I'll look around and see if I have anything worthy to contribute.

And how do we KNOW the winner has seen all those movies? Honor system?

This is a good point. Last year some people (including me) had a few of non-horror titles in their lists but they didn't count them towards their goal. Nothing wrong with that. I still had fun and I still enjoyed reading everyone's lists.

I agree, reading the lists are the best and most interesting part. Also, even though I try to see as many horror films as possible, October is also the month were I attend at least two non-horror film festivals - so there's a smattering of other movies.

Watch one film from every decade, starting with the 1920's (or the 1910's if you can find them).

Watch films in at least two languages other than English.

Watch a film and its remake.

watch a film which won an Academy Award -- any category.

Watch a film and at least two sequels.

Watch a film in each of the following horror subgenres:
--- Vampire
--- Werewolf
--- Ghost/haunting
--- Witchcraft/satanic/religious
--- Zombie
--- Slasher/psycho/homicidal maniac
--- Monster/creature feature

Watch a film starring:
--- Bela Lugosi
--- Lon Chaney (Sr. or Jr.)
--- Boris Karloff
--- Vincent Price
--- Christopher Lee
--- Jamie Lee Curtis

Watch a film you've heard about but haven't seen (and report back in the discussion thread).

Needless to say, I'm in!

Has anyone thought of more to expand on this concept? I was thinking watching films by certain directors, but Masters of Horror season 1 would almost completely clear that list, unless you wanted to add a rider of "must be feature-length."

Maybe foreign films?
Japanese
Korean
Italian

Any other countries release a lot of good horror?

How about certain studios? Universal, Hammer, Dark Castle... any others?

BTW, that was a $25 Amazon GC...misspelling on my part. Sorry. It's actually leftover "earnings" from a poll/survey site I didn't realize was there. Don't worry, I'm not crazy enough to actually pay for it out of my pocket.

That's not a bad idea. I recently won a DVD prize pack from another website that used Random.org to select the winners, so we could always go that route. Nothing is set in stone yet and there's plenty of time to come up with something...at least until October rolls around.

I'd appreciate it.

If you'll read the fine print it clearly states that all participants who have reached or exceeded the set goal of 100 will be subjected to a polygraph test to be administered by their local police department. Also, internationally-renowned psychic/animal communicator Sonya Fitzpatrick has been hired to overlook this event and weed out those who are padding their lists.

Yeah, it's pretty much the honor system. And don't forget the lists are public and people will more than likely notice suspicious activity such as someone watching 30 hours of films within a 24-hour time span. But, why anyone would deliberately cheat on something like this is beyond me. Are there really people that dishonest out there? Don't answer that.

I have about 3-4 used horror dvds I would practically pay to get rid of I would throw in the booty...

I have my old non-SEs of Candyman and Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2 I can send out. They're open, but they play fine. And I like the idea of having random winners for people that hit 100.

EDIT: I forgot, I also have a sealed copy of Haeckel's Tale from Masters of Horror I could donate as well. Just let me know.

I thought about including directors, but didn't want to make the checklist too long or too prohibitive (some people who don't think they can make 100 may use this instead). As for foreign films, I stole the language from last year about watching films in two languages other than English; dealer's choice as to what languages get watched.
