Re: Zulawski's The Important Thing is To Love from Mondo Vision: 6/16/09
I'm really happy to see enthusiasm for this release! I've been waiting for this one since I started working with Mondo Vision -- an in-her-prime Sophie Marceau was the only selling point I needed. (Unfortunately, my request to conduct her interview for the DVD went unheeded )
If you're interested, here's a brief (and very self-indulgent! ) look at some of the artwork process: http://www.bunnydojo.com/blog/?p=47.
Regarding the pricing, as far as I've heard, Amazon is playing around with it at their own discretion; their markup on little guys is pretty insane. Unfortunately, it's still the best option. If these first few releases are well-received and Mondo Vision can build the 'catalog' a bit, everything from input prices to Amazon's fees should (hopefully) go down for future titles.

Just a note to say, the screen captures on that page (for all editions) are significantly softer than what's on the actual discs (with the exception of the German disc which is quite blurry). You can expect a much more detailed picture from the disc that I worked on.

I bought from that seller too with good results. The posted link doesn't show the other prices in the marketplace. Always check for better deals from other sellers if available.

agreed.
Silver Globe would be a mindfuck of a release though! i can't imagine what they'd have in store for it. too bad there's destroyed footage supposedly and we may never see the full potential of it.

Thanks David. I'm sure it will be another beautiful set. My only issue is exclusive vendor Amazon only taking 10% off of the list price for these.

Actually they're not quite exclusive - I know that DiabolikDVD.com also stocks them, not sure if the prices are less though:
In any case, your point is the same, you can't buy these discs from just anywhere. Last I heard, Mondo Vision were trying to get them into people's hands via more outlets, but the cost of licensing, manufacturing, and then distributing these risky titles is already high, and getting them into "mainstream" distribution probably isn't at the top of their priorities right now.

I've decided to just bite and pay full price for these. Its admirable they are putting so much work into these releases and I think MV deserve our money because of it. I hope they are popular enough that they get through Zulawski's entire catalogue.

I just blind bought the L'AMOUR BRAQUE DVD yesterday. Holy shit, this director is bad. He's slightly better than Wong Kar Wai, but god is he bad, bad, bad...I've just seen this and ON THE SILVER GLOBE. The commentary on the dvd is awesome. This director is full of shit and just double talks. He doesn't answer any of the interviewer's questions and when he does answer it's in double talk. And Andrzej Zulawski pretends that he doesn't know English perfectly which he does. He keeps on asking the interviewer for English grammar help, which he doesn't need. What a joke. Sophie Marceau is hot in this movie though.
Does anyone want to buy my L'AMOUR BRAQUE DVD for 20 bucks?

Todd, I'm guessing you bought the regular edition? if its the limited one I'll take it of your hands but i doubt it.
As for Zulawski, he's definately one of those directors that you love or hate.

Before you sell it, you might want to give it another shot, though. For me at least, Zulawski films tend to take one viewing just to get acclimated. L'amour Braque might be a hard one to start with, since it's so out there, but there's a lot to love too. There's definitely a two-sided conversation in your brain of "What the hell is this?" versus "This is awesome!"

i think Zulawski is far from bad - he's just on a completely different, confused level - well, maybe after 'Third Part of the Night'. i'm not even sure he knows what he wants to deliver most of the time, and the end result is always one of the most unique experiences ever (even though Braque is my least favorite i've seen yet). I get a neo-Shakespeare and a Dostoyevsky-existentialist feel from his expressive screenwriting.
'Possession' and 'Third Part of the Night' are the best works i've seen from him thus far.

bunnydojo, I realize you're only involved in the product design, but do you have any idea when we can expect to see Szamanka?

I'll post an early look at the SE packaging within the week and then the LE packaging as soon as it's officially announced. From what I've seen of the transfer, this one is going to be pretty special.
Then, the gap between Szamanka and The Silver Globe should be a short one. And, from what I'm hearing, those won't be the last of Mondo Vision's plans.

As far as I know, everything is finishing up. I'd say you can expect a release date within the next couple of weeks?

throw in Possession and Diabel closely after then that'll be the best news ever.
