Like for the animation challenge I tried to check all the boxes but I just couldn't do all that Japanese Animation. Checklists can be valuable in trying other stuff just don't feel like you have to be a slave to it.

I liked it too. Basically Netflix is trying to build their own collection of Hallmark-type movies.

Hallmark movies are so sickeningly saccharine.

On checklists, my thoughts are always to pretty much never remove anything, but make all sections 5 out of 10 or such.

I spent last night in bed with my puppies watching Hallmark while a local radio station on my Google speaker played Christmas music

Re: It's Beginning to Look A Lot Like The 17th Annual DVDTalk Holiday Challenge (11/21 - 1/1)

I've already got the house decorated and I've been watching most of the new Christmas movie debuts. 19 new Christmas movies so far. lol.
Love Hard is my favorite. For Bruce Campbell fans, One December Night on Hallmark is fun. Not spectacular, but fun. I wish they'd had more of Bruce and Peter Gallagher singing. They were really good! The romance subplot was forgettable.

Thanks for finessing the checklist, The Monkees! A lot of good stuff on here.

I'm still scratching my head a bit about the first "select 5" set. A number of those things seem impossible to find or at least so obscure that maybe one film would qualify. Does anyone have suggestions for these?

--- Watch a film/show based on or turned into a video game. - suggestions? list?
--- Watch a film/show that takes place in space. - suggestions? list?
--- Watch a film/show that takes place on or under the sea' - So on a boat would qualify? That would make it easier. What about a coastal town or island?

Some possible options to add to this set
-- Watch a film/show that takes place in the tropics or someplace warm at Christmas
-- Watch a film/show that takes place in a major city (New York, London, Paris etc)
-- Watch a film/show set on or that visits the North Pole

Christmas specials and episodes based on video games
5 Terrible Video Games Based on Christmas Movies
And from this list, I spotted (might be others I missed, and YMMV whether you consider some of these Christmas movies):
- On Her Majesty's Secret Service
- Batman Returns
- Die Hard
- How the Grinch Stole Christmas
- Gremlins
- Home Alone
- Home Alone 2
- Iron Man 3
- The Polar Express
- Rise of the Guardians
- Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer

--- Watch a film/show that takes place in space. - suggestions? list?
I agree, this one is definitely tougher, and I couldn't find any lists. But...
- I mean, there's always the Star Wars Holiday Special
- For that matter, does the Lego Star Wars Holiday Special count? I haven't seen it yet.
- And there's Santa Claus Conquers the Martians
- Which made me think, any MST3K holiday episode should work, right?
- Intergalactic Thanksgiving, or Please Don't Eat the Planet, if you want something non-Christmas
- Space: Above and Beyond has a Christmas episode (River of Stars)
- Bravestarr does too (Tex's Terrible Night) -- that show takes place on another planet, I'm pretty sure
- Maybe Futurama? They have a few Christmas episodes
- Does The Jetsons take place on Earth? I guess so, but it at least feels space-y
- He-Man and She-Ra: A Christmas Special starts on another planet, and there's a spaceship, though I don't recall whether we actually see it in outer space

Don't know if this is kosher, but if you expand it beyond setting to a more general extraterrestrial/alien theme, there's:
- A Cosmic Christmas
- Aliens First Christmas

and Christmas/Thanksgiving episodes of:
- 3rd Rock from the Sun
- Alf
- Alien Nation
- Doctor Who
- Invader Zim
- Legends of Tomorrow
- Lilo & Stitch: The Series, and Stitch!
- Lois & Clark
- Men in Black: The Series
- Mork & Mindy
- Roswell
- Smallville
- Space Ghost Coast to Coast
- Starman
- Supergirl
- Teen Titans Go!
- V: The Series

--- Watch a film/show that takes place on or under the sea' - So on a boat would qualify? That would make it easier. What about a coastal town or island?
I've always counted boats/ships in the horror challenge -- that's what I took the "on" part to signify. Island/coast/beach seem like more of a stretch to me personally, but given the limited options, I wouldn't scoff at someone counting those as qualifying.

Some possible options to add to this set
-- Watch a film/show that takes place in the tropics or someplace warm at Christmas
-- Watch a film/show that takes place in a major city (New York, London, Paris etc)
-- Watch a film/show set on or that visits the North Pole
I like these additions!

I also love all the updates to the checklist, The Monkees! Thanks for putting all that work into it (and for hosting)!!

Oh, that's a good one! I have no idea how big the pool is, but it's an interesting theme.

When I turned on my Roku today, I was notified that they've upgraded the Roku Channel. It now features a group of live streaming channels. Channel 386 is Holiday Movie Favorites by Lifetime.

!

Thanks for all the suggestions! That will help a lot. I can always rewatch Rudolph. :-)

Hallmark has a "Christmas Sail" out this year, but I already watched it. I'm sure I can find another boat one.

Cool! Good news about Roku. I've recently subscribed to Frndly TV. They carry all the Hallmark channels, UPTV, GAC, and they just added the Lifetime channels as well. It's a good way to watch the major Christmas premieres if you don't have cable.

Definitely helping to get in the mood now. Woke up today and had my Google speaker play a favorite local radio station, and they started Christmas music today.

I'm late to the game this year, but I'm looking forward to starting! I've already watched quite a few cooking shows/challenges the last couple weeks!

So far, this is the only new Hallmark movie that has caught my attention and fully because it's Bruce Campbell. I'm sure I'll catch others as I love all their cheesy goodness and formulaic plots this time of year, but how can you not watch a Bruce Campbell movie? I haven't watched it yet, but it'll likely be one of my first watches of the season.

I got myself into the mood for Thanksgiving with episodes of The West Wing and Gilmore Girls. It's been a while since I've watched either show, and it was a lot of fun to revisit them. I may add them to my "to rewatch" pile though it's hard to revisit larger series when there are so many new shows I've yet to watch.

I’m not sure if people here are following the schedule of holiday specials, but if anyone is interested, Rudolph The Red Nosed Reindeer will be on early this year. It is on tonight at 8 PM EST on CBS.

Speaking of space I recall taping a tv special in the 80s, the beginning was clipped. It seemed "off," probably Canadian, it was cute but kinda melencholy. Think it was an SFM Holiday Showcase, the guy went to space with his dog and there was a robot and it was Christmas time?

Also anyone here have the Cousin Eddie Christmas vacation movie in their plans?

I've seen that one exactly once - and that was on time too many... Worst part is I purchased a copy just to see it.

I am a Giveaway Monster and my hunger was not satiated with the Horror Movie Challenge. So I am going to be giving away prize packs to participants all Challenge long! They are mostly going to consist of MVD, although there will be stuff like an "exploitation" bundle, TV bundle, etc.

I will be choosing at random, although for that exploitation bundle, you have to "opt in" and tell me you'd like to be considered for it, because I know that isn't everyone's cup of tea.

Not sure if anyone else here is nostalgic for growing up in the era of the NES, but I read on one of my gaming groups on Facebook that 8 Bit Christmas has premiered on HBO Max today. I’m looking forward to checking it out sometime.

Crap, I didn't even realize we had started on the 20th. I always thought we started on Black Friday, but glad to get moving on this now.
