I watched Wicker Man last night for the theme. It was my first time seeing it… wow, what a film! It’s been on my mind all day today. Christopher Lee was amazingly creepy.

Last time I was in the office, I found a thriller collection and then the other packs weren't balancing out the way I wanted (I try to do one or two really solid titles, a few DTV titles, and usually one or two cult/exploitation movies), so I assembled the "misfit discs" into another pack. I really do try to put packs together every year that well-represent lots of different tastes, since I never know who will win.

Speaking of! How are last year's winner enjoying their prizes? Anyone using them for the challenge this year?

Re: 100 Movies. 31 Days. The 18th Annual "October Horror Movie Challenge" (10/1 - 10/31)

Return of the Living Dead (1985) may be my favorite re-watch every year. I never get tired of it. When I was a kid, my older brother recorded it off of cable on an old VHS tape in 1985 or '86. I must have watched that tape about 100 times that year. When my family moved in '87, the tape went missing and I was just left with the memory of it. They finally released it onto DVD in the late 2000's and I picked it up. Ever since, I watch it every Halloween season. No other movie puts me into the Halloween mood more. From the atmosphere to the wardrobe to the comedy to the soundtrack. It's almost a perfect horror movie to me. I was disappointed to learn that the cemetery was a set created for the film as I occasionally will go visit filming locations and wanted to go there. I introduced this movie to my (now) ex-girlfriend in 2020 and she loved it as well. Even gave her my DVD since I had upgraded to Blu-Ray. Still, this 80's movie holds up well in 2022. Every time I watch it, I'm taken back to my 10-year old self watching this with my brothers and father, who hates horror movies, but enjoyed this one and quotes it a lot to this day. Excellent time I'm having right now watching it.

All the checklist links have been updated. And as Undeadcow said, there thankfully wasn't much in the way of director deaths, which is why both the 'recently deceased' link for it and makeup effects artists were removed.

Sunday Night Trivia Question #1

A celebration of the master of the macabre.

May 27, 2022 marked the 100th birthday of the legendary late actor Sir Christopher Lee. Yesterday we payed tribute to him via a theme day, and he's the star of two subsets. You've probably already seen the countless Internet memes about his greatness, which includes releasing four heavy metal albums, his stellar military service, holding a few Guinness World Record titles and being the inspiration for James Bond. For our purposes, he played the character of Dracula nine times, starred in 85+ genre films, hosted his own horror anthology series and a documentary about ...100 Years of Horror. He shares a birthday on the same day with Vincent Price, and one day after his partner-in-crime Peter Cushing.

Name 3 of your favorite Christopher Lee films. Any genre.

A list to refresh your memory.

That's it. There are no right or wrong answers. Randomly drawn. USA only please.

Should anyone be interested, the Friday the 13th set is now $79.99, an all-time low at Amazon.

Here's the
link link

Edit to add: Had been mentioned in the Shout/Scream Factory thread, leading to the price drop at Amazon.

Return of the Living Dead manages to be both my favorite zombie movie and comedy. I first saw it around the same time as you and at the same age. I used to go to the local video store with my dad and he rented it for me. I enjoyed it back then, but I appreciate it even more watching it now as an adult. It did some things with zombies that other movies hadn't done before, most notably fast zombies, and also zombies specifically having to eat brains. You can also credit it, along with Day of the Dead, as being the first movie with talking and somewhat intelligent zombies. Technically the credit goes to Day of the Dead, but it was released only a month prior, so it's really a wash. It has one of the most iconic zombies in Tarman and happens to be the funniest movie I've seen. I look forward to owning the Scream Factory 4K UHD later this month.

I imagine my viewing will take a big dip now. I haven't gotten married, but I do live with my fiancé. And she absolutely hates horror. She watched with me this weekend, but asked that I not watch anymore around her because she had trouble sleeping because of them. I'll be with everyone in spirit though and still reading the thread.

Funny you should ask... I have several from last year that I've been holding onto for the challenge. It's a habit I've gotten into: any horror movies I get after November 1st I usually hold them for the next year's challenge.

That’s a good idea, I could assign a half-shelf or so to “watch next October”. But I also have a monthly checklist item of “watch a boutique horror disc’ to at least make some progress on my unwatched piles (although I’m sure I buy much more than one a month…).

I had to go somewhere with a friend of mine yesterday, so I only managed to get one movie in. Not sure exactly what, but but something that I ate yesterday really didn't sit right with me. I woke up at 3 in the morning nauseous and in a cold sweat. As a result, I took a sick day today. At least I get a chance to make up some numbers.

From my list, a crazy viewing for the flashback theme last night. A bit of Terminator but mostly an Aliens rip-off. I’m not super familiar with this ‘genre’ of Italian filmmaking of the 80s and 90s, but apparently it was done a lot. Copyright laws didn’t apply there at the time perhaps?

015 - Shocking Dark (1989), TV-MA, Tubi, 6/10 - makeup

—- Straight up steal of Aliens, though called Terminator 2. Fairly decent acting and production quality for one of these Italian filmmaking copies. Kinda so brazen and bad it’s good sometimes, but perhaps I’m too forgiving.

Can someone remind me of the time minimum to count an entry? I'm guessing a 75 minute series episode counts as 1, since some full movies are that length. But a 52 minute episode counts as half an entry? Is there a hard limit minimum for something to count as 1 entry?

Re: 100 Movies. 31 Days. The 18th Annual "October Horror Movie Challenge" (10/1 - 10/31)

I noticed that this year is my lucky 13th OHMC! I know I've said in the past I'm not watching more than 31 or 50 only to end up over 100. But that's absolutely not happening this year. Although if you mention to most "normal" people that you watched 31 horror movies in the month, they'll think that's a huge number (and maybe also think you're a little crazy ). Let alone how it looks if you watch 100+!

I think it's flexible, as long as its reasonable. With more tv episodes having different times than the past, it's not as straight-forward. I know the old rules said 90 minutes of tv (without commercials) equals 1 entry. But there are more commercials now, and I can typically watch tv that fills a 2 hour time slot in 80 minutes. And for ease of counting it makes sense to round to the closest number (to either 0.5 or 1 entry).

I have to quit the challenge after the 26th because the husband and I are going on a long overdue vacation. We're taking a bucket list cruise from Athens to Turkey and Israel. I'm trying to watch as many subsets as I can before we leave, but I'm not worrying about the checklist this year..
