100 Horror Comics in 31 Days - Days 1 and 2

Soul Plumber 1-6

A total blast of ‘comics should be ridiculous’, while also being a surprisingly slightly respectful attack on religion and man’s nature. The art is amazing, and the story kept me engaged and surprised at a couple of the turns. Highly recommended.

Why do groups split up when looking for monsters in caves? Mystified while watching It Came from Below (2021).

The Curse of Bridge Hollow, like someone mentioned, is more of a family horror in the vein of Hubie Halloween or Goosebumps. I'm about an hour in, but am struggling to finish. I should've known from the first few minutes where Marlon Wayans said the town smelled like "white privilege" how I was going to feel about it. Priah Ferguson is fine as the lead, but Marlon Wayans is taking being a skeptic to absurd levels. Honestly, this plot is so similar to Goosebumps: Haunted Halloween, I feel like I've already watched this. But, it has had its fun moments.

100 Horror Comics in 31 Days - Days 3 and 4

The Conjuring: The Lover 1-5

An odd title that I wouldn’t have expected from DC. It was actually an anthology title, sort of. The five part main story was an average tale of a first love wedged into the Conjuring universe and apparently leading into last year’s film. Each issue also included a backup story called a Tale from the Artifact Room, and these backups were much better stories from a rotating cast of creators, including one deliciously drawn by Kelley Jones. Also included in each issue were a couple pages of fake ads, bringing to mind the ads from the 70s. Oh, and wonderful main covers from Bill Sienkiewicz. Not strongly recommended overall, but I’m not upset that I bought these, as DC horror anthologies were key to me becoming a comic book fan and collector.

Chopping Mall is a movie I saw several years ago and didn't remember thinking much of it. Watching it right now, though, I'm enjoying it much more this go-round. It's like they watched Short Circuit and decided to make a horror version of it. Lots of 80's cheese, but glad I decided to give this a second chance after seeing the section on it in one of the In Search of Darkness documentaries.

I’m actually going to try and finish up the Home Grown Horrors box. I’m thinking that I liked Fatal Exam (1990) better than Winterbeast (1992). Going into I Spit on your Grave in about 10 minutes.

The Cremator goes high on my list of first-time watches for this challenge. The lead actor was slimy and charming, and he kept the film moving at a brisk pace. The film had a very French new wave style to it, with the camera often moving very fluidly, and the editing was very fast and choppy but effective. There were also a lot of fourth wall breaking elements. There's also a lot of humor, but it's very dark humor as you'd expect from a film about the Holocaust. I've had the Criterion Blu-ray for a while but have always put it off. I'm really happy I finally watched it.

While I appreciate the Halloween Ends reviews and thoughts, it would be awesome for those to be posted in the dedicated review thread for the movie. If they must be posted here, it would be nice if they were spoiler free here or at minimum use spoiler tags.

Several plot points were ruined for me due to one review posted here.

Just finished the absolute bonkers A Haunted Turkish Bathhouse, and it's up there on the list. It essentially mixed elements of a Yakuza, Pinky Violence and horror film with Poe's The Black Cat. A brothel is closed and turned into a Turkish bathhouse after a government prostitution crackdown, and it's right on to the usual crime, sleaze, violence and murder-plotting tropes of the former. It's not until the final act when it goes completely off the rails into revenge horror territory once the Ghost Cat Lady emerges, which includes some of the funniest flying cat scenes ever. If you're a fan of Kazuhiko Yamaguchi’s only other horror film Wolf Guy then this one's a must watch.

Just noticed that Disney+ has added The New Mutants (2020). Into my queue it goes.

If you go into it thinking it a horror film, and not an adaptation of the comics, it’s a pretty good little film iirc.

Interesting... I purchased a copy a few months back. Once I hit 100 I may watch it as a diversion of sorts... (I have no idea why I've not yet watched it outside maybe too much stuff that sounds more interesting)

**EDIT**
I looked it up on IMDB where it's classified Action/Horror/Mystery. Absolutely counts so I may not wait to break 100 first...

100 Horror Comics in 31 Days - Days 5 thru 7

The Silver Coin 1-10

Wow, wish I hadn’t waited so long to read this one, as I should have been raving about it in the local shop for over a year now. An anthology title done in a way I don’t remember seeing before, Michael Walsh provides the amazing art for every issue, and we have a rotating cast of writers, including some of the top names in the business like Ram V and Jeff Lemire. The ‘mythology’ issues 5 and 10, exploring the origins of the coin, and written by Walsh as well, are the strongest. I hope this title continues for a long time.

I do think it's a horror movie, that's why I mentioned it and it qualifies for one of today's themes too, Monster Movies. Good to hear that it's worth watching.

With my late start, I've been focusing on the categories of the checklist I always wind up struggling to knock out at the end of the challenge. Once I knock out the writers, I'll probably pop in a favorite or comedic flick to balance out and rejuvenate me. It is always fun exploring new stuff and find something as odd as Night Hunter and I wanted to do this before I lose steam this year. I do look forward to popping in a good standby tonight, though.

Maybe I should've heeded the warnings on this one. "Infuriating" is a good word for it:
Spoiler:
I hope the stupid stuffed rabbit was worth it! And just so many other times you just wanted the Danish couple to do something. Father sitting in the front seat staring at the keys while the other guy is out of the car ... doesn't do a damn thing. And at the end just meekly stripping and standing there while stone to death. I guess that was the point the filmmaker was trying to make ... how meek people can be when trying to be hospitable. The killer outright says it when asked why he's doing this: "Because you let me".

Doesn't really make sense how they could get away with this for so many times. They're picking the "prey" family from organized vacation groups. How many affluent families would have to disappear before the police start piecing things together. The Danish family was even telling friends they're visiting people they met on the trip, which is a common thing to do when out of town for a few day.

We're at the half-way point of the month already! My viewing has (intentionally) been less than most years, and I'm mainly catching up on new movies. Going by my ratings, my favorites so far have been: X, Sissy, Mad God, The Cursed, and Werewolf by Night.

I saw it a couple of months ago, but I really enjoyed The Innocents (the 2021 Norwegian movie, not the 60s ghost story), and I see it's playing on Shudder.

Oh it’s 100% a horror film. I just said that because comic nerds tended to hate it.

This made me smile considering your title includes "Comic Nerd"

I haven't watched it, but maybe I'll get it into the queue. I honestly forgot about it. Is it a good horror movie that makes sense with the characters or is it a horror movie that is just leveraging a name more than anything?

Yikes! That was a mad dash to get my trivia answer to Chad. I had nearly completely forgotten about it!

I had a bit of a weak viewing day. Last month, I started a side gig doing some DoorDash and Uber Eats deliveries. I was feeling a bit antsy today, so I did some deliveries for a chunk of the day. It was nice to get out. My friends weren't able to come by this weekend, so I watched Bodies Bodies Bodies with the audio commentary instead. We can still watch it later in the month that way.

I had requested Monday off. Work has been super crazy lately, though, so I'm not going to be able to take off after all. I'm hoping I can take some time next week instead. Fingers crossed!

I had some similar thoughts.

That damn stuffed animal! The moment with the dad in the front seat of the car was the one that really made me go crazy! I just try to think of it all more in terms of social commentary, but the movie also made me think some about The Exterminating Angel.

Dumb question as I likely missed this in the prep thread but why does the sub-set list have 2 movies for yesterday, 3 for today and 4 for tomorrow?
