I'm guessing they're going to wait so they can have a Blu-ray version ready for day and date with the other versions. We'll have to see if the release date changes when they re-announce it.
I want to cry. Now this is gonna come out about a month later than the original date.

This is exactly what I was thinking... minus the tears.

If that's indeed the case, hopefully they'll also get BD versions of Into the Wild and Sweeney Todd ready.

Yep, I cancelled my DVD preorder of Into The Wild and the Beowulf UK BD import in hopes of these sneaking into the first batch of Para BD's.

Looks like Universal may be doing the same with their upcoming HD-DVD's as well:

Universal: HD DVD Plans in Flux
Fri Feb 22, 2008 at 11:00 AM ET
Tags: Industry Forecasts, Universal (all tags)

With Universal having thrown its weight behind Blu-ray earlier this week, the studio says the fate of its remaining HD DVD releases is currently TBD.

Though the studio has yet to make any formal announcements, when asked to confirm recent retail reports that it was planning a March 18 HD DVD debut for the Oscar nominee 'Atonement,' a Universal rep told us that the studio's entire HD DVD slate is currently in flux -- leaving open the possibility that it may not issue any more titles in the format.

As for which titles might be affected by such a move, prior to Tuesday's announcement, Universal had only confirmed two upcoming HD DVD releases: the Chevy Chase comedy 'Fletch' (due March 11), and the Tom Hanks-Julia Roberts starrer, 'Charlie Wilson's War' (which had been planned for sometime in the April-May timeframe).

At press time, the majority of titles on the HD DVD release schedule were split between Warner and Paramount/DreamWorks. As we've previously reported, Warner recently reiterated their intention to continue supporting the format until the end of May, while Paramount has yet to set a timetable for its own move to Blu-ray (just this week, the studio issued fresh details for two upcoming HD DVD releases, 'Sweeney Todd' and 'There Will Be Blood.')

We'll keep you posted on any changes to the HD DVD release schedule as soon as official information comes to us.

Well Universal didn't have much announced in the first place, just like last year.

There Will Be Blood hasn't been canceled, and neither have the two Universal releases.

DVDActive has low-res cover art for the 2-disc SD DVD of "There Will Be Blood" and it looks pretty terrific. I'd imagine/hope they will use the same image for the HD DVD . . .

Tiny little thing at the bottom of the advertisement says available on HD-DVD. I hope that stays true.

Despite that advert, I've heard from a pretty reliable source that there WON'T be an HD DVD of THERE WILL BE BLOOD. But that may change if Paramount feels the heat from HD DVD owners. I know they're in the process right now of evaluating if they're release ANYTHING after February on HD DVD.

I almost blew a gasket until I looked up info on the disc, and realized that's just the UK version of what we were blessed with here.

Any word if that includes Dreamworks, too? I've been wanting to get Bee Movie next month since I missed it in theaters. Now, it'll probably be delayed, though.

I've heard the exact same thing, unfortunately.

Yes, I've heard Bee Movie is part of the "probably not coming on HD DVD" list. Again, no official word, just a source.

I wouldn't bet on ANY future HD DVD releases because studios are re-evaluating their situation. Since Toshiba left town, nobody needs to release shit on HD DVD.

If we see future HD DVD releases, hey, it's a bonus. Otherwise, I'm not planning on anything. Except for maybe Beowulf.

Can anyone tell me how much different the Blue-Ray menus are, my best friend has a HD set up and the iHD menu tech just blew me away, 300 is amazing on HD DVD, I'll be investing in a Blue Ray player later in the year (apparently most of them out at the moment will be obsolete (I can't believe that), is it true?,

I have around 20 HD titles and about 12 Blue Ray at the moment, as I only started collecting them in Sept 07. My friend told me to wait til at least Easter 08 before getting a player, as he said the format war would be over by then.

What do you mean, "no" to those titles? Are you speculating or do you have some evidence?

Yes = Shipped already and online stores have them ready to sell.

No = Very slim chance these will ever see the light of day as they have yet to be pressed. Most likely will not with the turn of events in the past 2 weeks.

Why wouldn't Paramount (and Universal) follow WB's lead and go through with the titles they had announced?

I understand the idea behind ending the format war and all. But they could certainly press a few thousand copies of each title and allow people who choose to buy them go ahead and do so, despite the knowledge that HD DVD is dead and the titles will be out on Blu-ray sooner rather than later.

Opportunity cost, maybe? If they have a certain amount of resources to devote to HDM, if many/most of the outlets for distributing their titles are taken away, and if they lose any economy of scale by cutting back how many copies they press for each title, it might just not be financially worthwhile.

I'm really keeping my fingers crossed that the upcoming Paramount and Universal slates debut on Blu-ray in the near future...I really want to buy There Will Be Blood, Sweeney Todd, Bee Movie, Into the Wild, Fletch and Charlie Wilson's War (but won't pick up any more HD DVDs...American Gangster was my last one ever, which I only bought because I got it cheaper than the SD was going for around here). I know it'll take some work to redo these titles with BD menus etc. but I really hope they do... all of those are MUST OWNS for me.
