I think there's a chance we could get those next year. Pinocchio is the Platinum title that has gone the longest since its last DVD release, which was in 1999. I believe it's the last one without a "modern" transfer. Remember, it was in that initial wave of titles where they used laserdisc transfers. So, it should be next in line, but we'll see.

Fantasia is the second oldest. While it did get a new transfer for DVD in 2000, it was released before the era of extensive digital cleanup (Lowry). So, it could be next, unless they want to put out something more popular. In any case, I would love for them to release that, especially since we'd also get Fantasia 2000 at the same time.

Sleeping Beauty was Disney's first feature in widescreen and 70 mm.

It's the obvious place for them to start.

Sleeping Beauty > Lion King

In fact, it may be Disney's best animated classic.

personally it's one of top five Disney animated films - for starters the damn animals never speak - a major plus if you ask me, Princess Aurora has both a mother and a father (a rarity for it's genre) - and Maleficent's awesome transformation into a dragon.

as for Pinocchio, I recently watched this on DVD and I thought the colours were lacking, they felt drained and the print a tad grainy, if and when Disney gets around to remastering this, I hope they can boost the colour scheme a little bit.

That was an absolute crap release; the movie deserves MUCH better.

I hope the eventual Platinum/Blu-ray has all the extras that are on the laserdisc and hopefully some 'new' exclusives - like say a commentary track

You're referring to the "all Disney movies have dead mothers" genre?

My absolute favorite Disney animated film of all time is Beauty and the Beast. They would make my year by releasing it in 2009. I have a LaserDisc copy of it that is pretty old and worn, and I just never got around to getting it on DVD, so it would be a pretty big jump for me.

Interestingly enough (or not, your mileage may wary), I have quite a few Disney LaserDiscs that I just never got around to upgrading (Oliver and Co., The Lion King, Hunchback of Notre Dame, Aladdin). I'd be up for upgrading most of them to HD.

There's one problem with Disney's Sleeping Beauty: storytelling-wise, it's one of Disney's weaker titles. It'll look great on 1080p BR disc, though!

I for one am eagerly awaiting the release of Beauty and the Beast on BR disc. Hopefully, they'll tone down the garish colors of the original Platinum Edition DVD release and improve the sharpness specifically for hi-def video.

YES. Exactly.

Not being an expert on such matters, I always wonder why the blacks look too bright and dull in the segment, especially where the blue fairy 1st appears at night.

I always dream of it being "fixed" regardless of whether this was the way it was originally presented or not. To me, a lot of the cartoon looks almost unfinished at times. Whether it is due to degradation or whether this was the way it was originally presented, i'd love to see a version where everything is 'corrected' to todays standards.

I don't think I will rebuy my Disney animations. I was lucky in that I only had 1 in VHS (Bambi) and have most of the DVDs. I ripped the ones I play the most on my Mac. I'm content with my up-conversions on my HDTV.

At this stage, I'm tempted to say he knows that (after posting the mispelling and being corrected MULTIPLE times) and is just doing it in an attempt to be quirky/funny/original/cute. In reality, I am with you in simply finding it annoying.

I don't even like Sleeping Beauty, I'm really looking forward to Lion King, Aladdin, Little Mermaid and 101 Dalmations on BD. But, I already have it pre-ordered on Amazon ... I guess you could say I'm just future proofing my house? I mean, I would like to get married and start a family after I'm done with college this summer.

Inside the 101 Dalmations platinum dvd it lists Pinocchio as the next platinum blu-ray after sleeping beauty in the spring of 2009. I think sleeping beauty, finding nemo, and Wall-E on blu can keep my disney hunger in-check until pinocchio. but i agree the 2 releases per year thing must go otherwise they might not all make it in blu's life cycle.

Disney will adjust as necessary. Remember, when DVD the deal was based upon the VHS model; one title a year with a moritorium for 10 years. Now it's two a year with a seven year moritium, I believe.

It gives them 7 years to release the 14 Platinum titles. Each year, they should be able to do about 1 Pixar catalog title and a few non-Platinum titles. That doesn't seem like a bad time frame to me, even though it sucks now looking ahead.

I'm guessing they'll release Toy Story 1 and 2 around the same time in 2010 to coincide with Toy Story 3. And here's hoping for The Incredibles in 2009.

Yeah, that's why I said "about" one per year. That should be a nice set.
