Yeah, I agree. I think this is a great idea. I have tried to keep up with the Platinum releases (though I think I've slacked off, lately), and I was really wanting to get this BR release of Sleeping Beauty, but I haven't went Blu, yet. Having a DVD copy in it as well makes me actually consider purchasing it. That way I would, at least, have the DVD copy of this release. Though are any of the Platinum Edition special features on the DVD or just the movie, and even then, is there any difference in the Platinum release of the movie than the original DVD, since I already have that?

oh and the Grand Canyon short is in HiDef as well - ![Thumbs Up](/images/smilies/thumpsup.gif)
the review does seem to confirm that the previous commentary is NOT on this edition - aw crap!
I have no prob with all these films that are getting released with 7.1 sound with four channels of sounds in the side and rear, but why not go with five channels of sound from the front, since many 70mm films (and 8 channel SDDS) were actually released as such.

There are no home audio formats with 5 discrete channels across the front.

oh I know that, but since there are more films actually encoded 5 front/two surround, you'd think that would have been an ideal 7.1 configurement, obviousily that would have to factor in that speakers could be placed "behind" the screen and not the typical /standard setup of left speaker, tv monitor/screen, center channel above or below, right speaker.

Although, I remember someone commenting that he has seen someone put 5 speakers from a HTIB on top of a TV. I guess that could be considered a way to have 5 front channels.

I think they would be too close together to be worth it. The (extreme) left and right channels still would go near the sides of the screen; it wouldn't mean they would go way off to the sides. It would only work well in a theater with a large enough screen to provide some distance between the speakers. Some front projection setups could benefit, but not most with TVs. I just think having two extra surround channels does a lot more good than two extra fronts.

which related to the topic at hand, I'm really surprised that the new aspect ratio of Sleeping Beauty is 2.55, the only Disney animated film that I knew about they had filmed that way was 'Lady and the Tramp' is there evidence of cropping this go around, or is ther actual new left/right visual information? Considering this was released in 6-channel 70mm sound (five front/one rear) I'm sure some of the audio from said mix has been utlized for the new 7.1 soundmix.

After just seeing this come in at work today, I might just have to pick it up. I love that they included a dvd copy as well. Thats a much better idea than a stupid digital copy, that won't be anymore to me than a coaster.

Those are comparison shots from the new release of the SD and BD. I'm curious to know what the previous SD release looks like compared to the BD - or even the new SD to see the framing differences.

I just picked this up from Fry's and the set looks pretty great, DVD included as a slip case shrinkwrapped to the BD case. But one huge thing I noiced was that 2.55 (was the previous release only 2.35?), but they call this out stating "Never-Before-Seen Expanded Version Of the Film" with a couple of screenshots that make it look like the previous version was 1.85 or something, but with the new version showing much more picture on the left and right sides. I guess I need to go back and look at the previous release - and laserdisc.
the film has been projected theatrically in 2.35
the 70mm engagements were 2.20
where the Disney folk found the extra sides for the 2.55 version is baffling to say the least.

I also think that's another reason why they included the standard DVD along with it. Which oddly enough they included a lot of the extras from the BD like the music video "and more" according to the cardboard sleeve.

Looks like our own reviewer here on DVDTalk did it right. Here's some screenshot comparisons between the 2003 and today's release. It definitely shows more picture on the new release.

Next up for Disney Blu-Ray:
Pinocchio - Spring 2009
Snow White and the Seven Dwarves - Fall 2009
Beauty & the Beast - Spring 2010
Fantasia - Fall 2010
Fantasia 2000 - I'm guessing Fall 2010 as well. Can't see it sustaining without the original Fantasia beside it.
