I'm fine with with the changes since it's from Cameron. If this is how he wants it to look, who am I to question that. The guy is fairly successful at what he does.

That could mean he's not interested in adding any new extras. I think it's still on track for a BD release. I don't care if there's just a trailer for it. I'll take anything I can get, as will a lot of people.

This is from a story that blu-ray.com posted back in March:

"In other news, during the Samsung launch event, James Cameron was asked about his future plans. Cameron confirmed that, apart from the 3D Titanic project, his other projects this year involved bringing The Abyss and True Lies to Blu-ray. That doesn't mean that both or any of those movies will be released during 2010, but at least work is going to begin on them this year."

I'm guessing based on this interview, which is way more recent, that TL is really low on the priority list, compared to the next Smurf movies. You're right though, it still may be on track - but for when?

Okay, back to Aliens and all it's lovin'. I'm actually surprised he didn't opt to cut this one again, but I'm glad he didn't. Theatrical and director's cuts are plenty good for me.

Why would he re-cut the film?

He doesn't have much of a history of doing that beyond a theatrical and extended, and for the vast majority of his films, the theatrical IS his director's cut. ALIENS is one exception to that, and I believe THE ABYSS is as well.

Terminator, Terminator 2 theatrical version, Titanic and Avatar theatrical version (no idea about True Lies) are his director's cuts.

Re: Alien Anthology - Oct. 26th

The interview is primarily a discussion of alternate cuts, as it is for the Avatar Special Edition and the interviewer focuses on the added footage. If you listen to the questions leading up to the True Lies question and Cameron's response, he says "maybe a few scenes", meaning his understanding of the question is: "are you going to do a longer cut of True Lies", not the general possibility of a Blu-Ray release or whether it will include extras.

Even still, Mr. Avatar's wording about "completely de-noising and de-graining" a film, after seeing what happened with the "all-new digital restoration" for Predator (also under Fox's banner), still isn't comforting. I'm leery, but I'll try to be optimistic until release.
Predator, AFAIK, had no input from the creative team, and didn't have one of the best DVD/Blu-ray producers in the business behind it. I'm not going to worry until I see something to actually worry about.

I think he considers both versions of The Abyss as directors cuts, since even though there was many factors involving how it turned out, the final theaterical cut was still done by Cameron.

why does the degraining of the film for it's bluray release not surprise me in the slightest - I knew at one point this would be addressed, but not actually implemented - wow ballsey on Cameron's part.

Gotta appeal to the J6P market who thinks grain = bad. This is one of the drawbacks with Blu-ray being (or at least appearing to be) mainstream. I hope he just fucked up what he was saying it and it's not DNRed/EEed to hell.

Well, I'm gonna let this one play out and see what we actually get before I complain, though it doesn't sound good.

That may not be a popular statement 'round these parts, but that doesn't make it one iota less true.

What's true for you isn't necessarily true for everyone else. Sorry bud.

If what Cameron has done here is that method that Lowry Digital talked about a few years ago (grain isn't removed but made more consistant so it isn't noticeable), I'll be interested to see it. if, on the other hand, Cameron is talking about DNR, he deserves a switft kick to the nuts each day from each of his fans.

Does JC really strike you as the kind of guy who would do that to one of his most beloved films? Let alone to any of his films?

Wish the movies were being released individually, but I will probably pick up the set at some point. I'm hoping someone will have it on sale for Black Friday.

Exactly. This is James Cameron we're talking about here. There's no way in hell he's going to fuck anything up with the presentation of this film.

He went non-anamorphic for Titanic and True Lies because he felt the image would be better for those at that time, and personally supervised how full-screen versions of his movies were created, and that was all many years ago. Now he's made Avatar the ultimate reference disc (he didn't have much to do with the re-release of T2 since he was busy with Avatar). I think it's safe to assume that Cameron knows what he's doing, and won't compromise this film's image for anything but the better.

After going through the rollercoaster of emotions of joy to sheer distane with Predator clusterfuck. I am on the fence of how the Alien Anthology will turn out. Time will only tell I guess

WTH... I want True Lies dammit!

At the risk of looking like I'm just trying to promote a blog post I wrote elsewhere (which honestly isn't my intent), you might want to read the story of how Cameron personally screwed up the Laserdisc transfer of Aliens back in the day.

He's made mistakes before. He supervised ALIENS on laserdisc many years ago, and used as a visual source a consumer brand TV he loved. It was recognized as one of the most inconsistent and ugliest transfers ever made, before it was quietly withdrawn and reissued without all the excess grain.

(This was recounted in WIDESCREEN REVIEW years ago.)

Myself, I'm waiting on street date reviews, but appreciate the update. No soup pre-order for you.

Thanks Josh... Good read.

I still don't know what to think. I'm just sitting here like Wile E. Coyote, blinking his eyes....right before he plummets to his doom.

I can say one thing from listening to that interview. He's definitely not the same James Cameron from years back.
