How long did you have to wait for that to happen, though? If years have to pass, I don't see it as being burned.

Yeah, it did take years, but it still sucked. But these days it doesn't take too long for prices to drop. Probably less than a year till the price for the set becomes more acceptable. But just seeing the clarity and depth of the BD screenshots makes it that much harder to wait for that time to come.

Screenshots of Alien 3 and AR don't look as good as the first two. Slightly disappointing but not surprising they didn't receive the same treatment.

That's what I think. I've only seen 3 once....and...I never want to go through that again. 4 is ok to me. Ron Perlman saves it for me....kind of...

Does anyone else find it weird how dramatically different the colours are on these comparisons? That's not just correcting we're talking about, it seems like all-out re-grading. I don't mind the look per-se, but it seems more like a modern style than an accurate 'polish'.

I know what you mean. I saw it too. They look better....but....looks like stuff was added too. The Blue is heavier....I dunno if that's how it originally was for Aliens.

No. As I have said before in this thread, I think Alien³ is on par with Aliens as the best sequel and film in the franchise, and I think Alien: Resurrection is mediocre, with a lame ending.
That said, everything that makes Alien³ good can't be good without Alien and Aliens coming first, which is something that makes a good sequel a good sequel. I'm definitely not suggesting that anyone should take Alien³ by itself. Still, I think the workprint is just great (I've never watched the theatrical cut). The exploration of where Ripley is at emotionally and psychologically at that point in the series is very powerful as far as I'm concerned, and Weaver performs it masterfully.

Yeah, the extended cut of 3 is interesting, but I cannot imagine someone seriously saying it's on par with the first 2. The first is a masterpiece, the second a stone cold classic, the third a minor classic, and the fourth is an odd Jeunet film that happens to feature Xenomorphs.

On the third film, I really like the journey Ripley goes through. The three films make a great character study of Ripley. Ripley dying was a bittersweet end. Even though I can find Resurrection fun, it really screws with the her arc.
I like watching 3 just as much as Aliens. Alien is still the best.

I think all we can really agree on is the first is a masterpiece. Not sure anyone has ever felt differently on that movie.
The higher the # of the sequel, the more debate we will have.
let's all hope that this blu-ray set will help us appreciate all these films better!

I think the big difference here between myself and some fans is that I didn't grow up on these movies. Wasn't allowed to see R-rated films until I was 15 or 16 (and I was also a giant pansy, so no horror movies for me). I watched the entire series for the first time when the Quadrilogy came out. I think when you're younger, Aliens really gets into your imagination and takes over, whereas as an adult, to me, it was just a very well-made action film with great characters. I like it plenty, but I bet if you played with the action figures and whatnot as a kid it'd be a different experience.
I'm also never satisfied with Cameron's cuts. Like all of his films he's done two major cuts for (except Avatar, haven't seen the longer cuts), I think the TC is too short and the DC is too long.

I still need to watch the longer cut of 3, and I've had the Quadrilogy for years!! Come to think of it I haven't actually watched any of those discs!! And now I'm getting the bug to get the new BD anthology. What is wrong with me!! I should just rent the Anthology so I'll actually watch it... to much backlog of DVR and Netflix to watch! It's just unmanageable! I'll never actually watch any of the discs I own!!! AAAA!HHH!!!!

Just too damn dark.
After now seeing comparisons with the D-VHS master, I'm now officially depressed about this release. Just what I did not want to see- they went and fucked around with the black/white levels and colors- and pushed everything to a more contemporary look with crushed blacks, blown highlights and a new blue tint. The new caps look flat and dead compared to the D-VHS ones.
Every single one. Very depressing to see oodles of shadow detail lost (in a very dark film) irrevocably lost.
While not as extreme, as well as lacking the abundant EE, I still couldn't help but see parallels to the UK disc for Escape From New York. Look how bright and shiny and new it looks when you crush the blacks and blow out the highlights and introduce a blue cast to everything.
UGH.
Aliens looks like a win/win- but my favorite film is the first and it looks like yet another revisionist experiment by the creator that will push/pull me in and out of the film.
