Ripley's Daughter Gets Alien Blu-ray as Xmas Gift

20th Century Fox The 'Alien' tetralogy is still unannounced on Blu-ray, but one lucky person already has it at home - Sigourney Weaver has revealed that she just gave the discs to her 19-year-old daughter as a "surprise Christmas present." Previously, the New York-born actress had also said she had recorded new commentaries for all four movies.
....well, she better make a damn fine review of it.

New commentaries by Weaver for all 4 movies are definitely worth the double dip.

Double dip?! You mean the Alien movies are already on Blu-ray?

Hmm, I guess I shouldn't have called it a double dip. Well, whatever, I just meant buying the Quadrilogy once again.

I don't mean to be pedantic, but I'm wary of the term "double-dip" being thrown around. It has a negative connotation and is not really accurate here, considering that the alternative is not releasing (!!) the movies on Blu-ray at all.

While I can't argue with your suggestion that the new commentaries may warrant a repeat purchase, I would put to you that most folks' "reasons to re-buy" priority list might look something like:

HAVING THE MOVIES IN HD

I understand your point completely. To tell you the truth, I'm not that big of an HD addict haha. While I have been buying only Blu-rays (DVDs for some TV shows though) for over a year now I haven't replaced any of my DVDs with BDs as of yet. But HD AND new commentaries = a potent mix.

I just hope that they carry over all possible extras from every release, in addition to the new ones. For Blu-ray, there's no excuse to skimp on stuff like that, especially for a franchise this big.

I guess what I'm wondering is if the discs are actually done, doesn't that lessen the chance that they did a new Cameron approved transfer of Aliens?

re: Alien Anthology - Oct. 26th

I friended Charles de Lauzirika, the producer of the extras for the Quadrilogy set, on facebook awhile back. Recently, I asked him if "Frederick Garvin" (the pseudonym he adopted as director of the Alien³ documentary, which Fox mildly gutted to improve the way they come off in it) knows if the full doc will be restored on the new Blu-Rays. His answer could mean nothing, but it was:

I'd really like to see the full doc restored, because Alien³ is my favorite of the series.

But do we know when they began to re-author the discs? I'm sure it's no easy task to accomplish but, is it even possible that Cameron could have approved the Aliens transfer before he began the work on Avatar?

I think it's also possible that Weaver just got copies of the films with whatever transfers they had at the time. Maybe she didn't get the final production versions.

re: Alien Anthology - Oct. 26th

I'm just hoping it will stay the same set on Blu-ray, no subtracted features, only added. I'm especially hoping they won't add anything having to do with the Vs. films. They just don't belong.

My biggest wish would be to have a version of Alien 3 where David Fincher actually participates in the extras. I completely understand the bad blood and all, but it doesn't matter now and I think Fox shouldn't care about any bad things any involved in the making of movie may have to say about the studio. Of course that's all easier said than done.

re: Alien Anthology - Oct. 26th

what number is tetralogy(does this include ALien 1-4 and AVP and AVPR)

update
Never mind i see now that Tetralogy is a collection of 4, which now begs the question why did Fox invent the word Qaudrillogy for the last alien box set when there was allready a word for a collection of 4 stories.
or better yet is it really that hard to just call it the Alien Legacy collection or The Alien saga

I posted this before, I don't know where that post went (there seem to be a few glitches on my DVDTalk...?), but it's worth nothing that Fincher was the one who opted not to participate. He approved the inclusion of the workprint cut, but declined the offer to record commentary and appear in interviews.

Weird, I saw that you posted it before too. Definitely some glitches today.

That's blasphemy in so many different ways.

Anyway, I've really only a fan of two of the movies in the series (and before Trevor can comment, Alien and Aliens), but I'd be up for getting the box set.

re: Alien Anthology - Oct. 26th

Personally, I think we'll see a big book of all the alien & predator movies with a special disc of extras in a book format ala Planet of the Apes and Mel Brooks. I think it will coincide with something to do with the new Predators Theatrical release planned for July of this year.

Alien films will likely get individual releases, too... everything else is out on Blu-ray, or will be by then.

I hope not, but I suspect that'll be the case. Hopefully, like POTA they release em separately. Not because I don't want them all, I just don't care for the collector box sets... I don't display my collection, don't need another book, cards, or a miniature alien head. I just want practical space saving packaging.

Same here. Considering the 5-disc+booklet BLADE RUNNER set can be found in a single-width Blu-Ray case, I'd love to see the same thing done for the ALIEN films, but I fear we'll see a big unnecessary doorstopper first.

I would love to get this in the alien head packaging that Japan got for the DVD release of the Quadrilogy set.
