One of the best parts of ROTJ was the first time we saw Luke with the green saber in action. I can see why the building was cut, would have ruined the surprise.

Hmmmm. That deleted scene was kinda blah. I didnt geek out or anything like all the people there. They should have screened that Star Wars: A New Hope grindhouse edit there

Yes, I'll buy this. But I'm still holding on to my DVD's with the letterbox original versions.
It pisses me off that Lucas is complaining about how much it would cost to restore the original versions. First of all, those were the versions that made him so rich in the first place. Secondly, from a film preservation standpoint, these are the versions that need to be saved. If Lucas doesn't want to be bothered with the restoration, let Gary Kurtz oversee it.
At this point, we won't see a restoration of the original Star Wars trilogy until Lucas is dead.

Add me to the list of those who will take a pass now that there is an official announcement regarding no OT. If I feel like watching Star Wars (which honestly I haven't been for a while now), I only want to watch the originals. I have no interest whatsoever in the revised versions.
You would think that all these Star Wars whores would demand the originals be made available by voting with their check book but as long as these sell well, we will never see a decent treatment of the OT which is sad.
And him bitching about the cost is simply retarded. I wish Spielberg or another of his friends would slap some sense into him just once.

I'm suspicious of that deleted scene. It looks looks like something that could have been whipped up today. Anyone could be in that Darth Vadar suit or it could be outtakes from the meditation chamber in Empire. You can barely see Mark Hammil's face. I guess I'm a sceptic.
Hopefully we will see the sandstorm sequence which we know was filmed.

The bad news, at least for Star Wars and film purists, is versions of A New Hope, The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi in the set will be the modified special edition versions (re: Greedo shoots first) and not the original versions. Lucas explains the reasoning behind this decision to the New York Times.
"You have to go through and do a whole restoration on it, and you have to do that digitally," he said. "It's a very, very expensive process to do it. So when we did the transfer to digital, we only transferred really the upgraded version.... [it's] kind of an oxymoron because the quality of the original is not very good."

I hope they include a lot more extras for the ot. The dvd sets extras were lacking severely. Star Wars has been around for over 30 years and there's been a ton of documentaries over the years. Instead we get a crappy retrospective documentary and a few extras. I hope they can get the whole cast to do a commentary together or at least Mark Hamil.

Sounds like these would be worth renting, but not buying. Unless there are some REALLY good bonus features thrown in for good measure. I am with the original cut crowd...there's no reason not to include it at this point. He already put them on DVD (granted it was non anamorphic, but still...it's not like he's trying to pretend they don't exist anymore.)

The more I think about it, the more I can live without this if they don't include the original versions restored and in 1080p.
And if Lucas really thinks it would be too expensive to restore the unaltered original trilogy, he should just set up a donation page and ask every Star Wars fan for $10 and up. I guarantee he'd have hundreds of millions of dollars pouring in.

I'll probably pass on this, as much as I don't want to.
I already have the SE Set as well as the individual releases of I-III. Don't feel like buying those all over again. I don't own any version of the OT, so I was hoping for at least that.

It is amazing how my fandom of SW has dropped because Lucas is an a-hole towards the Original Versions of Star Wars, Empire, and Jedi. I just don't understand why the Special Editions and Originals cant co-exist in the same quality such as other DVD/BluRay versions of Lord of the Rings, Bladerunner, T2, and ET.
I am actually going to take a pass on this boxset, as I could care less about the deleted scenes, cause you'll be able to see them on Youtube after the release. And I really don't care about Phantom, Clones, and Sith, and I cringe when I see those stupid special edition changes especially the insulting force ghost image of Hayden standing next to Sir Alec Guiness!!!
Well, maybe we'll get a cleaned up version of the Originals in 2025, call me then Mr. Lucas.

Lucas can included scenes never intended for release that were deleted from even the original showings but the core theatrical elements themselves are cost prohibitive and/or not worth including? These are just variants on the already remastered matter from the new editions so how much differing original footage are we talking about?

The worst part is, he doesn't even have to remaster the entire movie. 75% or more of each film is identical between all the versions, so all you'd have to do is remaster the scenes that Lucas changed and create a branching version.
That said, I've stopped really hoping Lucas is going to ever change. I'm pretty confident I'll buy these, assuming the extras are good and I can get rid of my prequel DVDs.
Also, as a side note, I don't know that Lucas' statement that restoration is cost-prohibitive quite tops Sansweet's comment about the LD transfers they tossed on the 2-discers being "the best transfer of a movie onto home video that I've ever seen".
