re: Star Wars
It was never announced in the first place. Amazon just picked a placeholder date and everyone ran with it.
As I said before: there are 4 Tuesdays in the month of September. Pick the last one and you have a 25% chance of being right and worse case scenario, you gotta email a bunch of people and tell them they're getting "Star Wars" on Blu-ray 1, 2 or 3 weeks earlier than they thought.
The official site confirms this:
http://starwars.com/themovies/saga/p...ray/index.html
September 16 is the first release date to actually come from LucasFilm.

"Anyone that doesn't know what retailers do without a hard date is either just being silly, or as difficult as I am by calling out your defense of your defense of Amazon's placeholder."
It still doesn't make total sense, since Guru Askew was originally discounting Amazon's placeholder date, not defending it.
All we know is "September" so Amazon is simply playing it safe by picking the last Tuesday of the month, I wouldn't take that as an official release date. Sending their standard "your item will arrive sooner than anticipated" email in the even that it comes out on the 20th, the 13th or the 6th is better than sending a delay email.

Yeah, here and there stuff comes out on non-Tuesdays as mentioned. I think How to Train Your Dragon was a Friday. I think Blair Witch Project got attention for being on a Friday or Halloween or something.
I believe these were both Saturdays.

re: Star Wars
Okay, I need to rant on this a bit. I've pretty much shrugged off SW on blu-ray, but the B&N sale has me reconsidering.
Firstly, it's amazing that the specific details of the set won't be released until close to the release date, yet many people will pre-order blindly. Yes, "30 hours" of special features are guaranteed, but the details of that should be made known to consumers.
The movies will of course have new changes - CG Yoda in TPM among others. The fans want to original trilogy before the special edition and 2004 changes. This won't happen because Lucas sees the original version as incomplete. Not only that his ex-wife was an editor on the OT and he probably wants to avoid giving her a chunk of the profits for an original release. The "it would take too long to restore them" argument is horseshit. Look at how many movies have been digitally remastered over the years. Take Criterion for example - they'll clean up a movie from 50 years ago and make it look crisp as ever. We all know Georgie has the technology and could do it in a heartbeat.
I'm annoyed by statements such as, "We've found never-before-seen footage of cut scenes, dailies, etc." Again, bullshit. I highly doubt that stuff was unknown to anyone all this time. It's all a huge holdout to constantly entice fans to upgrade their versions. After all the movies have made their 3D theatrical runs, Lucasfilm will magically come upon another 30 hours of behind the scenes footage that "nobody has ever seen."
I love Star Wars and have over time come to really see how bad the prequels are from a pure filmmaking standpoint. I think Red Letter Media's reviews are spot on, despite all the oddball humor he injects into them. Of course, buying the OT only blu-ray means I miss out on the special features, again of which the details are obscure (what is the distribution of behind the scenes footage among the six movies?).
I could go on and on, but this shows the conundrum - I want to hold out and protest Lucas' greed and indifference towards the people that make him rich, yet I still find myself enticed to give in. I feel like Luke when he's talking to the Emperor. This is why Lucas will continue to ignore the fans. We will all go back to suck on the flannel nipple as long as the milk is flowing.
So, I'm still not sure what to do. If I can get the complete set for $45 from B&N, it's probably worth it, but I'd feel like a hypocrite. I'd prefer to hold out for the 3D set, even though I hate 3D and it's hard to tell at this point whether a 3D set would include the option to view the films without "3d" (e.g. without a few image plans that cause my eyes to strain and darken the overall image). My gut would say the next SW set will require you to purchase or hang onto the non-3D set to maintain all viewing options.

I have to add, I don't think I've ever heard anyone become indignant about not being fully informed of the special features on a release this early before.

"The details should be made known to consumers?" It's still pretty early, relatively speaking. My guess is that the description of bonus content will be announced around mid-summer, likely around the time of San Diego Comic-Con.
I have to add, I don't think I've ever heard anyone become indignant about not being fully informed of the special features on a release this early before.
You're worried about whether a forthcoming 3D release--a gimmick you hate, about movies you don't even seem to enjoy--is going to compel you to keep the Blu-ray release that isn't even out yet? Here's my advice: Pass on all of it. In fact, step away from Star Wars altogether. It seems that it displeases you at best, and has made you a neurotic mess at worst. I'm not saying this to be condescending, or to poke fun at you in any way. I'm being entirely serious.

Sounds like you're in denial about the marketing of these sets. And you made errors in interpreting what I said about future sets. Namely, people like myself might hold off on SW on BR for now, but when a deal like this comes along it might be worth it vs. waiting for another release down the road.
Lastly, the ambiguous feelings I expressed towards updated versions of the movies is hardly unique to me. 99% of fans feel the same way, so it's erroneous for you to attempt psychoanalyzing the harrowing effects of the movies on my psyche.

There's no reason to speculate about the original versions being included: Lucasfilm has already officially announced they will not be part of this release. Any speculation at this point has transcended wishful thinking and entered the realm of willful ignorance.

Seriously think about this for a moment, if you will. You're tempted to buy movies you don't like, depending on the bonus content while simultaneously you are reluctant to buy movies you do like on Blu-ray because you haven't been fully informed of the bonus content, and because you're afraid that an eventual 3D release will require you to own this release that you don't even seem to want to buy.

the solution is pretty simple, put out the money for the order now and if you don't like what is announced at a later date regarding the contents cancel your order then

- His ex-wife probably didn't get points for editing those films, so she's not likely to see much money just from her editorial role. Plus, I think she's still credited in the SEs
- The money she gets from Lucas (if she still gets any) likely stems from the divorce, and she'd probably get money from any cut of Star Wars.
- Lucas has re-released the original versions of the OT on video several times since their divorce, the last time being on DVD.

As for the Blu-Ray set? I'm a sucker for Star Wars, even though I've soured on the prequels. I'll buy it regardless.
