re: Blu-ray and DVD sales - #2, but we try harder

Going to Target the day before Easter, I was glad to see most of the movie displays empty from being sold out- even if a lot of it was likely standard DVDs and/or 2D versions of 3D movies. (I will confess to buying the Rugrats Trilogy!)

Yikes, 40% down from the same time last year? What the hell was out this time last year?

Looks like The Hateful Eight didn't make a dent at all.

Isn't it like the only mainstream wide release? Did Django make a shitload when it debuted on BD? I want to say yes.

Ah, it was Interstellar. And the last Hobbit movie the week before that. That makes more sense now. Still surprised the final Hunger Games didn't make a bigger impact.

I loved both, but Django made way more money and is much more of a crowd-pleaser. H8 is way more polarizing. Also, less people buying media now than when Django came out.

re: Blu-ray and DVD sales - #2, but we try harder

In case nobody noticed, Star Wars got an 83% Blu-ray share on the Top 20 list. Easily a new record and will likely result in more BD sales than Frozen's first week (which had a 50% share). Since Star Wars sales were 77% of the combined top 20 sales, it's a virtual certainty that next week will be the first that Blu-ray sales > DVD. Also extremely likely that we'll see a new sales record. (I'll guess $145 million and a 60% BD share).

Also extremely likely that we'll see a new sales record. (I'll guess $145 million and a 60% BD share).
The studios didn't anticipate this much resistance to consumers switching from DVD to Blu-ray. I think the rise of Netflix didn't help matters.

I still wonder how things would have shaken out if the studios had avoided the disastrous format war. Microsoft's meddling ended up being a pain for media lovers.

The problem wasn't Netflix or the format war, but rather the simple fact that Blu-ray didn't offer enough of a compelling reason to upgrade (a resolution-based upgrade that depends on larger screen sizes and/or closer viewing distances that most didn't have). I think if there was an "enemy" it would be DVD upscaling, which has proven to look surprisingly good on HDTVs. If DVD ain't broke, they won't be trying to fix it.

Netflix of course has affected catalog sales and is a general time hog which makes people less likely to seek out new releases to watch. But disc sales were already declining significantly before Netflix became popular.

As for the format war, Blu-ray sales started to skyrocket right after it was over. If anything HD DVD helped make it more competitive. Besides, the average consumer really wasn't ready for any new disc format in 2006, since DVD was at its peak that year.

A few years ago, one could argue that the economy really hurt Blu-ray sales. But it's hard to take that position now since the end of the recession seemed to coincide with Blu-ray's decline.

re: Blu-ray and DVD sales - #2, but we try harder

No record, but after nearly 10 years Blu-ray finally broke the 50% barrier for a week. Considering all the hoopla and massive all time box office and the fact that the movie targets the maximum Blu-ray demographic, I expected it to do better than it did. Frozen only did $400 million box office and had only a 50% BD share and that week was over $100 million. Maybe it's the fact that OD has declined quite a bit the last few years, or that quite a few were content with getting the movie on Digital HD.

But speaking of disappointing, DVD did only $64 million. It's almost like the movie wasn't even available on DVD, you would never know it looking at that number. That's just an ordinary week for DVD. So because of that Blu-ray still did (almost) the 60% share I predicted.

And it's worth noting that DVD actually shipped more units then the Blu, accounting for 57% of all discs sold...

There is a stubborn part of the market that is clinging to DVD like a life raft in the middle of an ocean. Most educated consumers have moved towards Blu-ray that grew up with physical media, while younger consumers skip them both for digital media.

Anecdotally I did see a lot of untouched Star Wars DVD racks.

The same crowd that clung onto VHS until the very last moment?

Well that crowd is a little bigger this time. 78 percent of all discs sold today are still DVD. So that life raft would have to be pretty freakin' huge.

Yeah, I see shit-tons of SW:TFA DVDs on store shelves, while the blu-rays are pretty scarce.

And they're already in the used stores too.

The DVD release has absolutely zero extras, not a single one. I wonder if people picked it up without looking and sold it to upgrade to Blu?

My Fred Meyer had SW DVDs by the front registers and the BDs in the electronics section.

Which is more profitable for studios?
1. $15 DVD
2. $20 BD/DVD/DC
3. $20 DC

I'd guess #3?

Immediate profit yes, but then that means those who aren't interested in #1 or 2 will probably never buy a physical copy again. Meaning there won't be any point in future releases that will sell, even on digital.

Geez no wonder why the BD share was so high. The price difference was only $2 at Best Buy and $3 elsewhere and included the DVD to boot. So for the price of a cup of coffee you also get the BD and an HD streaming version that probably has extras. Why did they even bother with a DVD. Were they trying to make a statement?

On the same token, with 4K coming out, I wonder how much longer they will release 3 SKU's (DVD, Blu, 4K) of every title. That's got to be expensive and inefficient...
