Blu-ray and DVD sales - We're number 2, but we try harder

re: Blu-ray and DVD sales - #2, but we try harder
I didn't switch to Blu-ray till two years ago. I bought a player for upscaling. On a lark I picked up Jackson's King Kong out of Wal-Mart bargain bin to see what fuss was about. I was sold lock, stock and barrel.
I then searched every film I own to see if it was on BD and made a list. I reviewed the list and anything I didn't feel I would want to watch again I crossed off and sold the DVD.
I checked out reviews to see which BD titles were screwed up and a step down in quality. Eliminated them. Example: Hills Have Eyes(1977)
When I title gets announced for BD release I decide if I want to really own that title. I either get the BD or sell the DVD eliminating the title altogether from my collection.
I decided to go in for a penny, in for a pound. If I don't feel like upgrading a title, I don't feel like owning the title. If I feel lackluster about upgrading, I know the title itself is not important to me.
Then there are the all time favorites that you've seen so many times you never feel like watching but need to own because they are a favorite. I'm 57 and have seen The War Wagon more times than I can count. I never even opened the DVD. When I watched the BD I enjoyed every second like it was the first time.
All told there are about 800 titles available on BD I want. I have 700 of them.
When I'm watching a BD I'm thinking this is worth every penny.
I've been collecting since 1983 and have never enjoyed it as much as I do now. Blu-ray is like a whole new world. I'm having a blast with it.

Yeah, you're older, so you probably have way more disposable income than the average collector. Smithee pretty much squandered his folks' loan on garbage formats.
Also, if the insurance were to pay out, I doubt the average person would rebuy all that crap again. Hopefully they'd be smart about it and invest it or use it for a down payment on a place or something.

Although i struggle to find titles I'm willing to get rid of, if they were stolen or destroyed I'd probably only replace about a third.

Yeah, same here. It would almost be a relief if there was a fire or flood that only destroyed my movies, so I would be more forced to pare down.

You’re totally right on that last part. Just because you don’t want to own every damn movie you’ve seen and kinda liked, doesn’t mean you can’t be a film enthusiast. I think I’m becoming a casual home media enthusiast. Just because I don’t upgrade every DVD I own to BD and prefer to rent from Netflix doesn’t mean I no longer appreciate films. I’m just finding less and less films I watch have that “must buy” feeling afterward. With most stuff, I’m satisfied with that initial viewing.

I still collect some of the big blockbusters like Marvel as well as some War films. Other than that I rent. That obsession with wanting to own "just in case" has long disappeared. I usually rent 2 movies every weekend plus some DVR and TV on DVD is plenty for Friday night thru Sunday night.

The 30th anniversary seems to have received a lot of media coverage from the general press and that likely helped sales. I guess it was the right time for a nostalgia kick with today's parents that grew up on Back To The Future.

With San Andreas and Jurassic World out, I wouldn't be surprised if the numbers go up. Usually summer action movies are pretty big sellers.

Demonstrating once again that dinosaurs reign supreme, the home entertainment release of Jurassic World crushed industry records in its North American launch, generating $82.6 million in consumer spend across both physical and digital formats.
Previously shattering global box-office records to amass $1.6 billion worldwide and become the third-highest grossing film in history, the year's number-one blockbuster sold nearly three million units on Blu-ray and DVD in its first week of release, outselling this year's previous top competitive title debut by 25%.
Based on its record-smashing opening, the fourth installment of the unrivaled dinosaur franchise is now on pace to become the highest-selling, Blu-ray and DVD title of 2015, as well as the industry's biggest live-action Blu-ray title of all time and Universal's biggest digital release ever.
"The colossal success of Jurassic World across the globe speaks volumes about the great filmmaking and universal appeal of this very visceral, larger-than-life adventure," said UPHE President Eddie Cunningham. "Jurassic World's record-breaking home entertainment debut, alongside Furious 7's recent spectacular performance, squarely reinforces the ever-robust and enduring consumer demand to own great content, both physically and digitally."

TFA isn't a 2015 Blu-ray release, it'd be on the 2016 list.
And hell, I was more entertained by Jurassic World more than the latest Avengers and it was certainly better than Furious 7, so it could be worse.

The problem I had with Jurassic World is that only about thirty minutes of it are entertaining. The rest just drags when there aren't dinosaurs on screen.

The whole franchise is built on a fundamentally one-note premise: dinosaurs look cool, get out, eat people. The end. That's basically all there is to it. You can add more and more special effects as technology gets more sophisticated, but there fundamentally isn't anything else to it.
