LiK, they changed the pics so I don't think the first version is available at all. I think the doll will look like it is pictured on their site right now.

People on this board say this, but when they try to release something creative here, people on the main DVDtalk board post to complain about how the package won't fit on their shelf.

True. I wouldn't buy a set that is encompassed in an ape's head or a fly-dome. It's just not logical for how I keep my DVD's. I would love tins though, those look brilliant. And they'd probably fit well on a shelf. (the ones already mentioned from here.)

Heh .. wouldn't doubt it. But I think that LE and special edition packaging really is a beast of its own. .. in that, the acquired taste is as limited as the sets themselves. I mean, I regularly see the R1 Schindler's List CE set over at a local (and heavily travelled) Best Buy [the really nice one with the hard plastic casing that resembles the memorial]. The product just doesn't move for your average DVD audience. The same could be said of some others as well .. The Big Lebowski Achiever's ed., Scarface box set .. etc. Some are very nice sets which I still see in a couple of local stores.

Then again .. the higher price points really puts people down. With many even on this site flocking to the all powerful Walmart $5 bins with pride in their savings. No problem at all with that, I just rarely find a film worth purchasing in those bins .. but hey, that's just me.

Though, it all doesn't necessarily answer why import editions are done consistently more interesting or better than R1 counterparts. One reason might be simply that in those regions, there may not be as a high of an interest in DVD purchasing (or as big a target market as in the US) .. therefore more elaborate releases are pushed in order to increase interest levels. I don't know and frankly am not worried about. I enjoy searching for and importing DVDs sets that are either better in quality (P/Q or audio) or just look so damn perrtty on my shelves!!

In Asian territories, the studios typically release discs in fancy packaging as an incentive for consumers to buy the official release rather than the cheap and plentiful bootlegs available on every street corner.

*sigh* that is so so true. i think we should at least get some awesome boxed sets like this as a special order from the companies' sites so we don't need to import them. if the US companies can offer to sell them on their own sites to US customers as an option, they might see sales from niche collectors like us. at least shipping would be less painful on the wallet for the big-ass sets like the Alien/iRobot head boxed sets.

i also agree with another comment that tin boxes rock!

Also, in this country, we have a large proliferation of consumers who use DVD burners to build their DVD "collection." But would fancier packaging really turn them around to not buy bootlegs/burn their own copies? If they don't want to buy a ten dollar DVD new, why would they drop sixty bucks for the same DVD in in a fancier box?

My main problem with some of the US limited editions is the price points. They are often so extreme above the regular release, and they really don't manage to give you too much more for your money. The Spider Man one comes to mind immediately, where they only gave you some pictures and a reprint of a comic book that is easilly available anywhere, and I think another DVD that is available elsewhere. I could have purchased those items in that set apart from each other and saved money. So you're paying $20.00-$30.00 more for what? Cardboard???

I've only bought two expensive collectors sets in my day, and that's the Phantasm sphere and the Rocky Horror lips case. The Rocky Horror one was definately over priced for what was in there, but I really wanted it. Would I buy more if they could manage to come down a bit in price? Sure I would. But I guess I don't see how this would encourage overseas customers or domestic customers to stop buying bootlegs/burning DVDs if they offered more special packaging.

That Disney set is awesome, I might have to import it (despite owning 7 of the titles). Any other info on it?

Oh man I'm in love with those tins, I just ordered the Serenity one and the RD and ghostbuster's ones are both tempting. $24 really isn't that bad of a price either.

******

Remember, the price is in AUS$ dollars & includes their GST (tax). Alot of the tins are between $16.21 & 18.03 (without the tax) which is about $12.01 & $13.36. The problem is the shipping, because they DONT discount for multiple DVDs, so each DVD is like $8.50 USD to ship (or more).

Still not a bad deal though.

Here are more of my tins :

FOREST GUMP Limited EzyDVD Exclusive Tin

KING KONG Limited EzyDVD Exclusive Tin w/ Productions Diaries

PULP FICTION Limited EzyDVD Exclusive Tin

SCARFACE Limited EzyDVD Exclusive Tin

SERENITY Limited EzyDVD Exclusive Tin

UNDERWORLD Limited EzyDVD Exclusive Tin

ya, it sucks that they don't discount shipping at all but its still not a bad price for what your getting. I had no problem swallowing the $24 for serenity because we don't have a R1 2 disc edition. It would be a little harder for me to drop the cash on something thats almost identical to the R1 version just with a tin. But still, that ghostbusters tin is calling my name and I'm thinking about it big time.

Just wanted to make sure of one thing about the ezydvd tins, they come sealed, correct? I plan on keeping them more as collectibles and want them sealed in the shrinkwrap. The two I plan on getting are Serenity and Ghostbusters. Thanks for the pics too!

The tin itself is not sealed, but the dvd case inside is.
I have the Serenity and Ghostbusters tins and they are very nice. The only thing I have to say is they are not steelbooks and therefore have no spines with names on them.

To add :

All the tins come in this cellophane wrap, which I guess u could tape and thus seal the outside of the tin for protection.

EzyDVD did start to label the sides, but it's very small type-set and is written on the side which opens instead of being on the spine.

If enough of us write in, I'm sure EzyDVD will begin to make their tins better and better. Also, COMPLAIN about their shipping rates. If enough ppl make sum noise, they might re-adjust their rates. Ya never know! :P

I'm sure that at few of the retail EzyDVD stores would have copies of this GODFATHER boxset. I'll have a look on the weekend. (Don't think that this was a big seller in any case !!)

With regards to the EzyDVD 'tin cases' - IMO they aren't exactly 'big sellers' here in Sydney, Australia. EzyDVD has a lot of retail stores - and they have them 'advertised' on stands in the store. Customers don't appear to rushing to get them. In most cases - they are old titles that are being 'rehashed' for further sales.

It would be nice to see a few 'steel books' sold in Australia...... BUT apart from the very rare aninmation title - or Xbox game - the distributors downunder dont care less about 'promotional boxes' !!
