I was able to pick up all three covers yesterday, but either they really underordered compared to issue 1, or these comics are selling at a much, much faster pace than I expected. They were almost entirely sold out by lunchtime.

I wasn't sure if I should go to Music Talk with this question, but since there's already a thread here... Does anyone know if there will be a soundtrack release with "Serenity"? I did a search, but came up empty. I've tried a couple times on eBay for the promo, but it always goes a little too high for me. Plus, I'm still keeping my fingers crossed for "Ballad of Serenity" to be on the soundtrack if it's released (I realize "The Hero of Canton" is too much to ask for )!

***I dont think this qualifies to be Blacked out for I didnt give away any plot twists or happenings.certain areas will be coverd but most stuff is generally known.***
I have seen the movie, and the way they had it at the time, I will give it a 5 out of 10.
The characters as you know them now have been completely changed and watered down. If you have watched the dvd extras with the interview from whedon, he says he wanted the show about the characters rather than the action. Well this movie completely goes against the statement he said. Now let me give you a little info on my firefly background.
I saw this movie in the opposite direction; I had never seen the television show (at the time). I saw it with my friend who has been telling me for week’s prior that I need to watch the show for how great it was. I didn’t really pay attention to him, and It so happened that I had a pre screening tickets for a “ new sci-fi movie from a major studio”. We had no idea what it was, but he figured it was Serenity, and thus it was. So we saw it with both sides of the spectrum; Him being the avid fan, and myself not even knowing one character or what it was about.
Let me start off by saying that the first 45 minutes of the movie was excellent. I was highly intrigued and I thought to myself, if it continues this way this would be one great film. Lets just say when I walked out I didn’t know any of the characters names besides Mal. It was confusing at the time to why they’re where so many and what purpose they served. Ill go through each character and there parts in the movie. Spoilers might be in here But I have tried to keep it a minimum. (keep in mind this was from my POV without ever seeing the show):
At the end of the movie we had to rate each of the characters on a score sheet
Mal: He did a great job as an actor. When I saw it I laughed at his jokes when I was supposed to, he worked wonderfully as the main character. He carried the movie. I gave him 5 out of 5 starts on the reviewing sheet. ( He was just as he is in the show which is great. Same ole Malcom!)
Jane: One of my favorite characters in the movie. Once again I laughed at his jokes, did a great job with the role. With now viewing the show, he’s a slight different in the movie. He’s not so overly macho/goofy as in the show. He’s a little more serious and it goes into nothing to where you would think he would betray anyone on the ship. I gave him a 4 out of 5 stars.
Zoe: Umm what was her role? She was Mal’s sidekick but they didn’t develop her at all. You didn’t end up caring for her as much. I know she is the tought women type where your not supposed to like them for they have rough edges; but at least in the show she was semi likable. Not so great acting job in the film and gave her a 3 out of 5.
Wash: The “pilot guy” as he was referred to because I had no idea who he was. He’s the same old wash, but he was not used to his acting/character potential as in the show. He pulls the role of staying in the background most the time and not being anything of importance. Gave him a 2 out of 5.
Kaylee: Thought she was cute. Did not go into detail to who she is or why she is on the ship. She was just kind of there. You could see the attraction between her and simon, but it was out of the blue. You could of fit all of her lines on a 3x5 note card. Very underused. Gave her performance a 2 out of 5 because I could not remember anything she said at the time of reviewing.
Anara: What in the world. Didn’t make sense to who she was, why she was on the ship, anything! I didn’t even know why she needed to be in the movie. Completely ignored as a character. Gave her a 1 out of 5 being she had no lines I could recollect and having a cheesy useless weapon in the end.
Book: What he was a character? When I saw him on the reviewing sheet I thought to myself “Ohh, I Thought he was an extra” he literally had no part in this movie. He just appeared in one scene from the dark desert. I didn’t rate him for I noted on the sheet :” he was a character?”
Simon: For the first hour of the movie I thought he was going to be a robot; Like a sort of spy for the alliance. But it turned out it was just his acting. I have no idea why they changed his character to such a wooden personality. Totally changed from his warm behavior on the show. No idea why they choose him for the part and gave him a 1 out of 5.
River: Very well done job. Really developed her and her role in the show. She was the only one who benefited from the movie. You learn some things about river that the show didn’t have the time to get to. Beautiful fight scenes, very well executed and it looked like she did most the stunts herself. She did a great acting job, was really impressed with her and people around me where saying, “ that river girl was so cool”. So that’s a good thing aye ! 4 out of 5 on my sheet.
Assassin: he did a decent job. Nothing to special. Would have been better to of used the actor who played the assassin in “ Objects in space “ episode.
No score
Note: I saw the movie with little or no special effects so the acting had to carry everything. No pretty graphics to mask acting performances.
Plot:
It was missing some CGI, but you got the idea of what would be there and it should be quite a sight to see. I think that general audiences will enjoy it, but I don’t think that they will be hooked. It doesn’t have the same character build up that build the attachment with the audience. The show DEFINITELY caters to those who know the characters and are fans yet changes them slightly… odd aye
After we walked out we talked about the movie for hours, he compared it to the show and he reluctantly agreed with me that the move was very disappointing. After seeing it I did not have any desire to see the show. But I was talked into it and as you could tell I have watched the whole set and have completely fell in love with it. One of the best shows I have seen in a long time. I felt so disappointed when I finished the last DVD and all I could think was ‘ Please let the movie fuel some sort of trilogy or bring the show back on the air’.
After seeing the movie then coming to love the show, All I can say is they sure gave the fans of this film something that was way below what you all deserve. It was just a mess.
Im hoping they take the time to change a few things and re work it.
Lets just wish that crowds come out to see it and give this thing a decent box office
… please….

Again, I apologize for going all grammar nazi, but I've seen that mistake made too many times in recent memory to simply let it pass.
As for your review, I respectfully disagree. As a fan of the series, I loved it. I didn't think it was perfect, but without turning the film into a 3 hour bore fest, I don't see how all the characters really could have been served justice. The peripheral characters were bound to get shafted, but even then I thought everyone had at least one or two moments to shine. I am dismayed that your reaction might be common amongst the uninitiated, however. I hope that isn't the case.

yay for correcting grammar on a forum.... Maybe a teaching aid position would make you feel at home....
And yes you are a fan and thus being why you would disagree. We want the general audiences to enjoy it more than just the fans. What happend when just the fans likes the TV series? Canceled :-/

I thought I was the only one who didn't like this character, glad to see somebody else who saw what that as well. My mini review is pages back

1) Fox broadcast the episodes out of order; they even showed the pilot last and left several episodes unaired.
2) Fox put the show in the Friday night "death slot".
3) Fox never gave it a chance to develop a fan base.
The vast majority of Firefly fans were introduced to the series once it hit DVD and became one of the best selling TV on DVD sets ever.
While I agree that fans alone may not be enough to make Serenity a success, there are enough of them out there that it is at least a possibility. We shall see...

The DVD set has been among the top sellers on Amazon since early June. It was even in the top 10 for a couple of weeks in late June/early July. (This site keeps track of its daily rankings.) As I said earlier in the thread, that's a pretty good sales record for a 3-year old TV series that virtually no one watched when it was originally broadcast. There are lots of people out there who know these characters.

From Moviehole:
Gina Torres has officially dotted her I's and crossed her T's to reprise her role as Zoe in a "Serenity" sequel - if the studio calls for it. "Not everyone will be coming back, some of their stars are rising far too high, but Whedon's locking most of the cast down for sequel one and two", says a studio insider. According to our friend with his glass against the door, "Whedon's got his story mapped out already for the next one - it's a tale that'll continue for three films".

My comic store actually pulled through for me and got me the rest of the covers. They've reordered the two issues three times, and sold out every time, on the same day they arrive. I'd love to know the numbers for this when all is said and done.
If people are still having a hard time finding any, I saw a few at Borders a couple days ago.. just another place to consider looking.

I watched Safe last night and this is the first one (though I have liked them all) that really got me. Ashame that there is not a discussion group for newer people.
I am looking forward to the movie now though.
