As much as I dislike TPM, I get what you're saying. I think TPM is the only PT movie that doesn't take itself too seriously. AOTC tries to sell the viewer on the Padme/Anakin romance, which just kills any momentum in the movie whenever is goes to them. ROTS is supposed to be this greek tragedy, yet the dramatic scenes are laughable: Anakin turning to the darkside, Padme losing the will to live, Darth Vader yelling NOOOO!
It is hard to explain but TPM has that innocent feel to it that AOTC and ROTS. Now don't get me wrong, the movie is a turd, but put in the context of comparing it to AOTC/ROTS, it definetly feels different.

Star Wars purists will be happy to know there are, according to an interview with Industrial Light and Magic special effects manager John Knoll in Variety, no current plans to add new footage to any of the films. Knoll assures that they will be exactly as first run, and that every pain will be taken to ensure the quality of the Star Wars 3-D transfer.

Lucas addressed it recently at Celebration V:
On the generation gap between trilogies:
"We know we have a real honest-to-God generation gap with Star Wars, which we found out after Episode I," explains Lucas. "Anyone over 40 loves IV, V, and VI, and hates I, II, and III. And you'll notice the kids under 30 all love I, II, and III, and hate IV, V, and VI" (at this point, a din of friendly protests arose from the audience). Now, we've got The Clone Wars for the under-ten-year-olds. Come on ten-year-olds, fight for your rights!"

Why can't we just get new movies? The Force Unleashed games are better than all three prequels together. I would pay to see a good Force Unleashed movie in 3-D. A Jedi taking down a Star Destroyer in 3-D or Jar Jar getting his face farted into in 3-D? You decide and let me know what you think.

no, I meant hated by 99% of Star Wars fans, save for those few remaining Lucas knob-swabbers that have since Jedi Mind tricked themselves into liking the shitty prequel trilogy.

I have alot of friends who are big SW fans and all of them really didn't like TPM, yet none of them post on the internet but me. Now they don't hate it simply because they don't think about it anymore. Most of them who grew up with the OT gave up on the Prequels after Episode II. I remember most of them didn't even bother with Episode III. Again, its not any hatred for Lucas like you hear on the internet, they just thought the movies were pretty bad, and really moved on.

And for the record, Revenge of the Sith is pretty awasome

I don't even recognize the internet when it comes to discussions on SW because it is such a small sampling.

I remember really looking forward to Sphere, for example. I had read the book and really enjoyed it. Barry Levinson was directing. The cast was great. I thought it was going to be something special. Then I saw that train wreck. Sure, I was really disappointed....FOR ABOUT A WEEK. After that I never gave it another thought.
I'm really just curious. Are you prequel bashers masochists? Or do you just like raining on other people's parade?

I don't understand why more people aren't like your friends. If you think the movies suck, that's fine. Just move on to something else! Its been 11 years for God's sake!

It's like if Sphere was tied to a film you like, and any time that film you liked was brought up, so was Sphere. The film is only available on Blu-ray in a two-pack with Sphere. And changes were made to the film you like to fit it within the universe of Sphere. You'd go from ignoring Sphere to wishing it were never made and cursing the people responsible for fucking with the movie you like.

Re: Star Wars: The Phantom Menace...in 3-D for 2012
Is George Lucas really that out of touch with his audience? I'm 22. When The Phantom Menace came out I was 11. By then I had already seen the Original Trilogy many, many times and I loved them. I can't imagine I'm the only one in that position.
I've seen the Prequel Trilogy and the only one that is even halfway decent is Revenge Of The Sith, and that's mostly due to the final scene between Anakin and Obi-Wan and seeing Darth Vader created. All of the movies had their moments, but they just missed the point of the originals. I felt that way when I saw them for the first time back when I was a kid, and I still feel that way today. Now, maybe if you asked kids that were 10 now, they'd like the Prequel Trilogy better, but under 30 is way too broad.
The ONLY good thing that came from The Phantom Menace was the Pod Racing video game for N64. I sure did love that game.

I think George Lucas must literally be one of the most out of touch director's of all time. He seriously doesn't seem to understand his audience, nor does he try to, and it's clear with the prequels he didn't even understand his own films greatest strengths.

Alright..well I'm 24. And I saw the OT on VHS a few times...I couldn't forget them after the 1st time. They were just the kind of films you don't forget..though..even at a young age...I hated the Ewoks. Phantom Menace was cool looking and I loved it as a kid. Growing up...yeah...I could see it's flaws.
He has to be out of touch without a doubt.

I don't understand how people are so upset. We've known he has been converting them to 3D for YEARS. Last year, one of the hosts on diggnation said he was shown the opening of A New Hope in 3D when they toured skywalker ranch.

How is it people get all upset when Lucas changes his work of art from the past, but nobody said nothing all those years when rappers were changing great music from the 70's using it in their songs.

Musicians who sample (and they're not all rappers) don't replace the song you love with a different one and tell you that what you've been listening to for years is wrong.

Re: Star Wars: The Phantom Menace...in 3-D for 2012
The problem is that the prequels are inextricably tied to 1-3 movies that these fans do like. The Blu-rays are coming out, but in a 6-pack. They're getting theatrically re-released, but prequels first. And then, Lucas goes in and makes changes to the OT specifically due to the prequels, such as changing Boba Fett's voice or Anakin's force ghost, making the prequels that much harder to ignore, and hurting the OT's quality in the process.
It's like if Sphere was tied to a film you like, and any time that film you liked was brought up, so was Sphere. The film is only available on Blu-ray in a two-pack with Sphere. And changes were made to the film you like to fit it within the universe of Sphere. But you can still like the originals and ignore the prequels. The OT Special Editions were made before the prequels came out. Since the prequels, 3 minor references have been added to the Special Edition OT: Hayden's force ghost, Boba's new voice and "Wesa free!" Its nothing to get too upset over.
I guess I just don't get the anger towards Lucas, but then again I like the prequels. They're not as good as the originals, but they are much better than the average summer movie.
As for being pissed that we have to get all six together in a box set, deal with it. I got the Superman DVD boxset because it rocked overall (even if it included Superman 3 and Superman 4, which are truly horrible movies). And there are plenty of shitty Bond movies in the 007 collection sets. But you don't see much of an uproar over that.
I'm just tired of the fanboy bitching. Watch them or don't watch them. Buy them or don't buy them. But stop whining. Its like listening to a friend cry about that girl that broke his heart 5 years ago.

You can try, but not successfully, since they're part of the same universe, and any reference to Star Wars in pop culture inevitably brings up the prequels. Add in Lucas foisting the prequels on fans whenever he can, and it's even harder.
And those were bad enough on their own, especially since the SEs have supplanted the unaltered trilogy as the "official" versions. Almost every other director and studio have made the original versions of their films available, even after a "director's cut" or other special edition has been released.
Also, some of the SE changes were made with the prequels in mind, which were only 2 years away. Lucas treated the SEs as a "test run" for some of the effects he wanted in the prequels. Not to mention that some of the changes were awful.
It's nothing to get too upset over if you don't mind the prequels or the changes. If you do, it's annoying, just like some of the earlier SE changes were, since they drag down the quality of the original films.
That's your major problem towards understanding. Again, think of a movie you hate like Sphere, and then imagine it intruding on a film you actually enjoy, to the point where you can't watch, discuss, or think about that film without the bad film coming up as well.
That was your choice though, since the Superman films are available separately.
There was plenty of bitching about the Bond collections. Some wanted chronological sets, some wanted just the "good" Bonds in certain collections, while some just wanted the Bond films available separately. But at least the Bond films aren't altered to accommodate a newer "vision" of how the Bond films should be.
Then you should be for what they want, since that's the only way the bitching will stop. BTW, being tired of the bitching is separate from understanding the bitching. It could be understandable how a prequel fan may be tired of the bitching, but it should be easy to understand why the bitching occurs.
The OT Special Editions were made before the prequels came out.
