I plan to see Dune in Dolby as soon as it premieres. Likely the Thursday night. If it's good, I'll see it again in IMAX.
I don't criticize or get upset at anyone for not going to the theaters right now. There's a segment of the population who simply doesn't feel comfortable being around strangers right now and that's totally fine and understandable. If you're paying for HBO Max and feel more comfortable being at home, then great.
and of course I know there's others who simply dislike the theatrical experience and think it's inconvenient and expensive.

Like Tom mentioned I prefer to go early on a weekend.

I will see this at least once theatrically in either IMAX or Dolby Atmos after previewing it on HBOMax. Better to start small and then go big IMO. Since it's up to the WB/HBO brass to determine whether or not it's a hit, and they're obviously kind of miffed at having to pay out so much on the movie already to avoid legal problems, I would say the chances of this moving forward with the necessary budget is slim. Maybe if any of us wins Powerball we can put up some money someday.

I don't know JoBlo but JoBlo's JimmyO loved it. Written review and here's his video review below. Neither struck me as major spoiler territory. The way he pronounces all the names, etc. is really weird, though.
The review is 00:00-6:28 and the rest is the two Dune trailers:

Glad to see his skin cleared up after 37 years
Late Brando would have been perfect for that role.

This review gives me some hope. This is from a guy who is admittedly a sci-fi geek but had not read the books. He said he was able to follow the plot easily and would love to see another entry.

Theatrical exhibition is not going away. Not in the next few decades, anyway. Even aside the bigger screen/better sound argument, people just like to leave their home to go to an event. There's always a need for different, but not too different.

No doubt, because it's James freaking Bond. It opens here two weeks ahead of Dune and apparently even earlier in China. Hopefully that's enough time for Dune to get some of the audience, even though the model for Dune will be different than Bond given the day and date format.

Did Villeneuve shoot this the same way Snyder did for Justice League? I hope not, but then again, the black bars on the left and right didn't bother me after a point.
Here's another review from a random nerd that's worth listening to just for what he calls trying to watch this movie on a TV vs a big screen.

However, that doesn't mean the home video version will be 1.43:1. The article also notes that James Gunn's The Suicide Squad was shot entirely on IMAX, and the home video version of that was 1.90:1 .
https://thedirect.com/article/the-su...vie-is-in-imax
Typically, how it works is the IMAX version is opened up to 1.43:1, while "standard" theatrical screens, and home video release, are either 1.85:1 or 2.35:1. Even when the Blu-ray has "IMAX enhanced" scenes, those are typically only opened up to 16:9 from 2.35:1. What Zack Snyder did for his cut of Justice League is an outlier.
This trailer for Dune in IMAX shows a lot of shots in 2.35:1, with a few opened up to 16:9.
I believe IMAX claims exclusivity over their aspect ratio and/or "IMAX enhanced" versions for a certain window at release, so it's most likely that the HBO Max simultaneous release version will be completely in 2.35:1. If you want to see more image, you'll have to go to an IMAX theater.

I know peeps around here don’t care much about Dolby Atmos, especially at home, but Apple Music has the soundtrack available in Atmos. Insanely layered and robust sound. If anything, this movie will sound incredible.
