I thought they weren't gonna use the plotline from the first comic series.

With his star on the rise, I can't see him taking the lead role in a franchise whose last two installments went straight to DVD. Seems like a bad idea.

It's a bit unclear on what this is movie is going to be... a remake of the first movie, or a readaption of the original comic book.

Yeah, how could Bale think that doing a Batman movie based on the last two (Batman Forever and Batman & Robin) be a good idea?!

I can't imagine Bradley Cooper as The Crow. He better lose some weight because Eric Draven was a skinny guy.
What's next, casting Jack Black as Connor MacLeod in a Highlander reboot???

Where has Juan Carlos Fresnadillo been for the last three years? Since delivering the surprisingly solid 28 Weeks Later in 2007, the Spanish director hasn't released a film, though Intruders, his horror film with Clive Owen is set to come out later this year. But while we wait for that project to arrive, Fresnadillo is setting up his next, and it's fairly high profile.
A press release has announced that Fresnadillo has been tapped as the new director of The Crow reboot. Up until last October director Stephen Norrington had been attached to the project, but decided to leave when an unnamed star was attached and wanted to change the story. Based on the cult hit starring Brandon Lee, the new film will be a "reimagining" of the 1994 film. It would also seem that they are starting from scratch - rebooting the reboot, if you will - as they are now looking for a new writer, whom Fresnadillo will work with on the script. In the story, a man named Eric Draven and his fiancee are murdered, and Draven is resurrected as a hero called The Crow. Wanting to reunite with his wife in heaven, he must search for and kill the man that took everything from him.
While I do like Fresnadillo as a director and want to see him get more work, I do have one quick question: why the hell do we need a remake of The Crow?

If it has a good marketing budget behind it -- combined with the admittedly limited brand recognition that Alex Proyas brings -- I can see it being a major film. The majority of folks probably haven't even heard of The Crow or if they have, don't know any sequels ever existed. It's like the American Pie movie and how they're bringing back the cast for a big box office reunion and dismissing all the direct to dvd crap.

It's all Pressman milking the franchise. From the horrible sequels, to the tv show with Mark Dacascos, to this new *reboot*. Kind of like Threshold Ent. and Allison Savitch with all the Mortal Kombat stuff.

Outside of the horrible retelling of the original movie, I enjoyed the TV show for the most part. It didn't have high production values, but Dacascos was a solid choice and once they distanced themselves from the movie it got better.

It's exceedingly hard seeing Dacascos in those old TV eps these days thanks to Iron Chef and even his appearances on Hawaii Five-O.

Read the Weinsteins' Lawsuit Against Relativity Over 'The Crow'
6:26 PM 4/20/2011 by Matthew Belloni
Two Hollywood heavyweights are clawing at each other over a planned remake of The Crow.
The Weinstein Co. on Wednesday sued Relativity Media over distribution rights to the remake of the 1994 action fantasy that will be directed by Juan Carlos Fresnadillo with Bradley Cooper in talks to star.
In a lawsuit filed today in Los Angeles Superior Court, TWC claims that Relativity, the Ryan Kavanaugh studio, has breached a 2009 distribution agreement that allegedly gives TWC the right to release the movie globally. Harvey Weinstein and gang claim Kavanaugh has now been shopping distribution rights elsewhere in violation of the deal.
“We have a written contract and we’re gonna enforce it," TWC lawyer Bert Fields tells us in an interview. "We’re not going to let these people sell distribution rights."
Read the full lawsuit here.
"Kavanaugh decided that Relativity would not perform that contract and will purport to sell TWC's distribution rights to others here and overseas in willful breach of the contract," the lawsuit states.
The suit seeks injunctive relief to stop any upcoming sales of distribution rights.
We've reached out to Relativity for comment.

Bradley Cooper?
Really.
On a side note, he was on The Actor's Studio a few weeks back and it was cringeworthy. Dude has zero personality and isn't funny in slightest. It was painful to watch.

Bradley Cooper Exits 'The Crow' as Other Actors Circle (Exclusive)
Relativity is remaking the supernatural action movie based on the 1990s comic and has set Juan Carlos Fresnadillo to direct.

“As the crow flies” may denote the shortest route from one place to another, but the movie version of The Crow is proving to be less than a straight shot.
Relativity is remaking the supernatural action movie based on the 1990s comic and has set Juan Carlos Fresnadillo to direct.
Bradley Cooper was to have played the title character but sources tell The Hollywood Reporter that he has now exited due to scheduling conflicts. Cooper has David O. Russell’s Silver Linings Playbook shooting this fall and then dives straight into Legendary’s Paradise Lost, which shoots first quarter next year…the exact time Relativity plans on making the high-priority Crow.
But akin to the project’s rock musician who is killed and resurrected, two new names have surfaced as possible replacements: Channing Tatum and Mark Wahlberg.
Walhberg has a previous association with the Crow; he was offered the part last fall but a deal never materialized. But there is a question as to whether he wants to revisit the role, and last week he signed on to Universal's 2 Guns action pic.
Tatum is best known for his work in G.I. Joe and the weepie Dear John.
It’s too early to tell what will happen with either Tatum or Walhberg, or whether other actors join the fray, although Relativity is keen on not wasting time.
The studio also is embroiled in litigation with The Weinstein Co. over distribution rights to the film. Harvey and Co. believe they have a deal to release the film but Relativity argues that the Weinsteins forfeited their right by, among other things, botching the release of the expensive Relativity-backed flop Nine. That case is currently in arbitration.
Crow, created by James O’Barr, centered on a musician who is murdered while trying to save his fiancée from thugs. He is brought back from the dead by supernatural forces and seeks revenge. The role was originally played by Brandon Lee, who was killed by a freak accident during production of the original movie in 1993.
The new film is being produced by Edward R. Pressman, Jeff Most, Relativity's CEO Ryan Kavanaugh and Apaches Entertainment's Enrique LopezLavigne and Belen Atienza.
Relativity had no comment.

Is there anything about the remake of "The Crow" that doesn't scream Shitfest!
...other than Bradley Cooper leaving the project, of course.

Juan Carlos Fresnadillo. Whoever the fuck that is...? ![Shrug](/images/smilies/shrug.gif)
Channing Tatum was very good in The Eagle so I'd give him the benifit of the doubt. And Mark Wahlberg could do it if he played it as a deranged version of his character from The Other Guys.
