It’s been said that there won’t be any studio money for more Avatars if the next two don’t do well. Wish they’d shoot the next Star Wars or Marvel movie in true 3D, making it more essential than it’s been before, or maybe actually come up with something new.

I wouldn't be surprised if the studio asks Cameron to cater to the MCU crowd, because the MCU films are the guaranteed money pot. At least this extra year they've been given ups the ante in terms of revolutionary special effects. I have no doubt the next Avatar films will be great in terms of technological achievement and that's all I care about.

Cameron was once great. But, what have you done for me lately. his past movies rocked. Avatar rocked, but fuck man, make some movies. I know QT limits himself, but c'mon what is the point of creativity when you don't show it...ever!

Damn shame he spent a good ten years of his career working on these movies though I do wonder how much Fox actually spent on this project during that time.
As much as I love Blu-ray 3D it's dead on the hardware side of things. Had these movies hit 3-4 years ago, which would have been ideal, we might be in a different situation.

I honestly hardly even remember the plot to Avatar. Cameron is talented, but I think he’s invested far too much time into a single film that while successful isn’t proven as a franchise. I think thirteen years between is too long. I especially think he's trying too hard to push multiple sequels when we haven't seen a trailer or any kind of footage from the first sequel.

A sequel or two? Or three? No man ... SIX! Or whatever cockamamie idea he has. Personally, I think he may be entering Ridley Scott levels of delusion.
I can actually see why Disney may have an interest in this ... and it’s not the movies. It’s the tech that is being produced. However I know it was Fox who green lit it and I don’t see them as having been as forward looking.

Lucas creates 6 Star Wars movies and Lucasfilm creates several more, but no one has any faith that Cameron can make Avatar work for more than one movie? Although I agree that I wish he was more prolific, that's just our selfishness wanting him to live a different lifestyle that we wanted.

I did not care for Avatar and how the movie made so much is still a mystery. The technology and world design was fantastic, but is Cameron so I expect that. The storyline was what destroyed it for me. Just pathetic. I also didn't care for the design of the N'avi. Add into it Sam Worthington who has zero personality and Michelle Rodriguez who I despise and most characters I didn't give a shit about.
Having said that, I am sure the general public will buy back into this series and the sequels will do very well. I even wouldn't be surprised if they break records. I never count James Cameron out when it comes to movie making. Even his least interesting movies are still good.

I'm really trying hard to want to see this.
We saw Avatar together on New Year's Eve 2009, celebrating midnight while cat people were putting tails in pterodactyls. It was good, very creative, and clunky. The bad guy was like the old mad uncle of Michael Biehn's bad guy in The Abyss. I haven't seen it since the theater and haven't felt an urge since, really. Is it anywhere for free?
It feels so, so long since that movie, will people get back into the universe?

I find it funny how everyone always doubts James Cameron, this happened before Titanic, it happened again leading up to Avatar. The Avatar sequels will not be as big as the first, but they will still bring in a healthy audience due to a ton of people being familiar with the brand. Avatar got people who rarely, if ever, go to the movies to drag their butts to a theater. If he's able to get positive reviews and push technology like he did last time, then we could be looking at another phenomenon, not biggest movie of all time phenomenon, but still huge.
I roll my eyes at him making four sequels, I wish he had spent the past decade working on other projects, but that's not what interest him. I do like that he seemed to actually take the time to have the scripts developed, not just rushing into the franchise, betting on the visuals to carry the movie again.

Avatar 2 & 3 were shot simultaneously.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Avatar_3
There's some question as to how much work has been done on 4 & 5. Cameron himself suggested that those films could be cancelled if 2 & 3 don't do well:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Avatar..._film)#Sequels
Bob Iger said 4 & 5 haven't started filming, while a producer says that at least part of 4 has been filmed.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Avatar_2#Sequels
So we're definitely getting 2 & 3, which have already been filmed and are in post-production. 4 & 5 could still possibly be cancelled.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Avatar_3
Avatar 3 started shooting simultaneously with Avatar 2 on August 15, 2017. Two additional sequels will start shooting as soon as the first two wrap post-production, and are expected to be released on December 19, 2025 and December 17, 2027, respectively.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Avatar..._film)#Sequels
Although the last two sequels have been greenlit, Cameron stated in an interview on November 26, 2017, "Let's face it, if Avatar 2 and 3 don't make enough money, there's not going to be a 4 and 5".
On November 14, 2018, Cameron announced filming on Avatar 2 and 3 with the principal performance capture cast had been completed and began post-production on April 18, 2019

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Avatar_2#Sequels
In January 2019, in face of the proposed acquisition of 21st Century Fox by The Walt Disney Company, Disney CEO Bob Iger confirmed that both Avatar 4 and Avatar 5 are being developed but haven't been officially greenlit. According to producer Jon Landau in February 2019, Iger may have been misinterpreted. He said that Avatar 4 and 5 ″are not only [greenlit]″ but also a third of Avatar 4 has already been filmed.

Re: Avatar 2 (2021, D: Cameron) S: Worthington, Saldana
Avatar made as much money as it did for one reason only - the 3D gimmick. This brought people to the "experience" and also charged more per ticket. It's a bare-bones paint-by-numbers boring narrative with maximum WOW factor - the epitome of style over substance. I don't know a lot of people who cared about a sequel 2 years later let alone 12. One trick pony. Unless there's some miraculous story work done in the sequels, it'll just be more of the same.
I don't think people care as much about the 3D gimmick anymore as evidenced by far less non-3D movies getting converted to 3D for theatrical exhibition. Studios and theaters cashed in while they could. If Cameron is banking on the gimmick selling more weakly plotted movies now, this may be the time he finally sees a huge failure.

I'm definitely in the minority on DVDTalk but Avatar was awesome. It was my first Blu-ray Disc purchase as well because I enjoyed it so much. It's also one of the last films I re-watched a half dozen times. I can't recall the last film I ever re-watched as I'm usually one and done.
Inception was the second film that became a Blu-ray purchase for me back in the day, but astonishingly I've never re-watched it. In any case, Avatar 2 will definitely be a pre-order day 1 theater watch for me.

We also don't know what the relationship is between Disney/Cameron. Between Lucasfilm, Pixar, Disney and Marvel properties he might want to walk.

Also, Cameron might not be able to walk. He signed a contract with Fox for these films, and that contract's still valid.

I know Star Wars, sir, and Avatar is no Star Wars.
Not by a long shot or an any playing field.
If he turns this into another franchise, great. However it seems very forced and presumptuous at this point. I always love more good sci-fi/fantasy in the world, so maybe we will be wrong. However, I don’t see Avatar merch flying off shelves. I don’t see podcasts about Avatar. I don’t see anybody dressing up in Avatar costumes on Halloween or buying Avatar birthday cakes. I never stepped on Avatar toys or Legos walking through my kids’ rooms. If there is anybody out there clamoring for another movie, let alone a half dozen movies, it is studio execs and Cameron himself
I am not saying “don’t make it”. I am not saying I won’t go see it (the next ONE anyway). I’m saying to green light production of the entire run anticipating a fan base is ... optimistic at best, delusional at worst. So far, the money thrown into it seems to be going down a cavern. How many times has it been delayed? Here is a theory now that Disney is at the helm: part 2 gets released into theaters. The rest gets chopped up onto Disney Plus.

I saw Avatar once and have no desire to watch it again, nor do I have amy desire to watch a sequel.
It was an okay movie, but its universe wasn’t anywhere near as wondrous and immerseive as that of Star Wars. All you have is a futuristic military-industrial complex and tribes of primitive aliens and exotic animals. It doesn’t fuel the imagination like Star Wars does.
