Why don't they make more? If there's such a demand for them why not make more money?

I really don't understand the point of their refusal to use a checkout method like Ticketmaster has had in place for years. Stick with small production sizes, fine. Continue to sell at prices that are a fraction of what your buyers are then flipping these things for on eBay instead of pricing closer to the equilibrium sell point, whatever. Doesn't it make more sense for buyers to be told when they go to add a poster to their cart that either they've got X time to complete the transaction, or that they weren't part of the Chosen Few?

I can't see how changing checkout systems would hurt Mondo; it could only make the already haphazard buying process a little more orderly for their customers. At this point, it appears that their position is simply that they like throwing chum into the water and watching the sharks react.

Their position is that if they expand production size, then their product will no longer be special. That makes sense to me (though I don't understand how offering 400 posters instead of 320 is going to wholly de-value their operation), but it doesn't explain why their pricing scheme hasn't moved closer to the equilibrium price point of the secondary market. It seems to me that by not doing that, they're the ones de-valuing themselves. Mondo is clearly doing fine with the way things are, but they've effectively allowed themselves to become manufacturer and wholesaler to a bunch of eBay scalpers.

The secondary market is crazy for these things. I've collect DC animated art off and on for 10 years and some of their canvas editions sell for less than some of these prints. I guess it's all about demand.

This same exact thing happened to me the first time I tried to buy a poster from them only I was doing it on my blackberry browser and just chalked it up to that. I hit refresh at the magic moment too (pre-Tweet) and all that, but then it timed out on the checkout page.

It is annoying and I wish they would make it a race to get it in your cart and you have like 3 minutes or something to complete checkout. You not only need to race just to get it in your cart, but you need to get lucky enough to not be a victim of their overworked servers.

One giant hurdle is licensing. Take Stars Wars. Lucas makes ass loads of cash every year on the Stars Wars brand merchandise. For someone else to take a chunk of that pie they have to pay Lucas to license that work. Lucas (or any studio) will let Mondo get away with paying a small fee for a small print run.

For them it's better to make a modest profit with little risk of over-stock, then it is to maybe make lots of money with lots of risk. But with a higher print run they not only have to shell out lots of cash upfront, they risk devaluing their other prints, giving a finicky audience the excuse to say they sold out, and storing prints they didn't sell. Heck, more prints equal having to employ more people and have a bigger processing department which add yet more headaches.

I'd much rather they had a hold system when a print is in a cart. I don;t mind being too slow... but I hate feeling like I was cheated by a laggy site.

I just bid $250 on a Kill Bill on ebay and was outbid within an hour with 6 days still on the clock, lame.

I'll pick up a few of the Roger Rabbit posters if I see them in store... seems like something they'd have available there. No promises... but I won't charge anything more than the price and shipping if I find some. It's hit or miss though.

I'll definitely be there (hopefully sometime this next week) to... pick up my Kill Bill poster. Oh... and the Dogfish Head Film Fest is this week too!

Sell it. Even if you only get half of that, it's a poster and you have cash on the table. I love all my posters, but if one of mine is selling for that amount, SOLD.

Quick question for those of you collecting prints (I just got into it)...what makes the prints sold on Mondo so much more sought after than others.

Since another user mentioned expresso beans, I browsed the site a bit and it seems there are a lot of other artists/sites that sell similar work. For example, I stumbled on Fro Design Co Store and they have really low print runs, but nothing really sells out. There are some prints I think look cool, but are they being printed w/cheap materials or something? (I have no frame of reference for what makes one print better than another in terms of materials used).

I like their style of prints, but the odd print size sort of hurts them. Mondo attracts top artists and already has a good presence; but I imagine this year will give us a few studios that might compete with them. I'm actually wishing someone would step up as Mondo has a few big things they need to fix, but with no real competition, they don't really feel the need.

Thanks for the link. Some cool posters there. Probably wouldn't buy more than one though (I have my eye on Jackie Brown) as their prints are all 11X17, a bit smaller than I prefer. If they were bigger I'd be all over those.

One good thing about 11x17 is that Michael's offers some decent frames at a very cheap price (2 for $6, I believe). I'll probably pick up some of these as well -- I especially like the 4-set of "Ones that Got Away".

I want to see an 11x17 frame in person before I buy anything from Fro Design just so I have a sense of what it will look like on my walls.

I'm thinking with the smaller size it pays to get a set (I like the Fillini three) and display them one next to the other.

The Manhattan one may be the only one I get to display alone if I can find a small area for it.

Just tape two sheets of copy paper side-by-side and turn them sideways... that's 11x17. It's not a huge size, but it's decent enough for small rooms. I've got 3 theatrical one-sheets crammed into my office, and I'm starting to think I'd rather have smaller prints so I could put more of them up.

One difference between high-end and lower-end prints is that Mondo (and some other places, I'm sure) create silk-screened prints using traditional silk-screening methods. Any place that sells "giclee" prints uses what is essentially a really good quality inkjet-type printer. Nothing against them, 'cause they can be VERY good quality, but they're not the same as screen prints.

I used the copy sheets to get a good idea of the size of the posters and taking into account that there can be a quality drop-off from silk screen w/Giclee, I decided not to drop $100 on the Fellini set and just went w/Manhattan (small print run of 20) since I have a good spot for a small poster like that.
