Well I understand that he was a criminal before and probably had a sketchy past but it seemed like the film was trying to establish that he didn't want to be anything more than the wheelman for jobs. All the sudden he's turned into a whack job and curb stomping some guy. It was just a little much I thought but whatever. I didn't think it was bad I just don't see why people are acting like it's the best thing this year thus far.

I loved it as well. My father-in-law hated it. Called it slow, boring, and said the music sucked, and they tried to make it too 80's.
I just told him he didn't know true art when he saw it, and if there were explosions, he'd like it.
He liked Transformers 3, and said Pirates 4 was the best of the Pirates movies, so you can see where his taste lies.
Oh and like some others had said, we also saw serveral people walk out after some of the violent scenes, particularly the one where
It was a couple of old ladies that left.

I fucking LOVE the music in here. Can't stop admiring it. It just really really sets up the vibe very well.
one of my favorite intro credit themes for sure.

I don't get the love for this film. I really don't.
I thought the style/look of it was fantastic. The music was great (just preordered the soundtrack).

I liked Drive, but I didn't love it.
Are we supposed to sympathize with the Driver, a man who takes part in armed robberies with little or no apparent motivation?
The Driver isn't greedy. His apartment and attire (besides the jacket) are plain. One wonders where all the money from his three jobs (auto mechanic, stuntman, get-away driver) goes. Into his car?
The Driver isn't ambitious. For example, even though he is willing to drive a race car for the owner of the auto shop, he expresses little to no enthusiasm at the prospect.
The character appears to experience an emotional awakening of sorts while spending time with the waitress Irene and her child. Unfortunately, the release of her husband from prison pushes the Driver away. Yet the brief emotional connection still manages to pull him into a crisis.
Even though the Driver is more asocial than antisocial, he reminds me of the Taxi Driver. They are both floating through life without any direction. And when they happen to cross paths with people in need of help, they CHOOSE to resolve the situation with violence. Neither is prudent enough to imagine a better solution.
In my estimation, Taxi Driver is the better movie because it at least offers a glimpse into the anti-hero's mind. The Driver is a complete enigma.

Too slow for you? Sure, I can understand that. Too violent for some? I could see that too. But for anyone to call this "an original piece of shit film that makes you want to say 'what the fuck'" should never ever be allowed to talk about movies ever again in a public forum.

I thought it was a good movie, but it struck me as anything but original.

I think your statement about it being an "original piece of shit" contradicts the climate of how people say original films don't exist anymore us here in the States.
@Ghostbuster: I don't think you always have to sympathize w/ your lead character. Why? What demands that? Worked fine w/ Raging Bull...ain't no way I'm feeling bad or good for that guy. You just have to know where this guy is going and why.

I already stated the film had a lot going for it (cast, look and music), but goddamn I don't get the massive hardon for it. It just seems like such a waste.

Just got back from seeing it. It's awesome. Very 80s Euro-trash with a heavy noir-like vibe. Great score by Cliff Martinez. Can't wait to add the BD to my collection.

I'm listening to the soundtrack right now. Riz Ortolani did one of the songs! Wow, that is awesome. He did the score to Cannibal Holocaust, which is one of my favorite soundtracks of all time.

This is my favorite film of the year! I love every second of it and just bought the soundtrack as it just exuded "cool". It reminded me many times of parts of Heat, True Romance and The Professional. A+++

I'm pretty meh on this film. It just seems like a decent director got his hands on a really cookie cutter, everyday crime script. I've seen this done a million times before, but people didn't just stare at each other as much in those other movies. Plus they listened to shitty heavy metal and stuff. Artistic? I guess?...Original and thought provoking? Not at all.

I don't think a film needs to answer all of the questions that it raises. But if too many questions are left unanswered, a film can feel pointless. Ultimately, I have no idea what the film is supposed to convey.

Re: Drive (Nicolas Winding Refn 2011) (Ryan Gosling, Carey Mulligan, Ron Perlman, etc
I find it hard to believe that the Driver was motivated by money.
He didn't appear to be materialistic. His apartment was bare. His clothes were ordinary. The only potentially expensive item he owned was an old sports car.
Don't forget that for six years, the Driver was employed full-time as an auto mechanic, and he worked part-time as a stuntman. The owner of the auto shop joked that he originally exploited the Driver by paying half the usual wages, but there's no reason to believe that the Driver remained underpaid for more than a few weeks or months. In short, the Driver surely had more than enough money for his fairly modest lifestyle.

It was actually 4-5 years (sorry to nitpick). I don't think it's important to know what he used the dirty money for, it doesn't fix a loophole or anything like that. Maybe he just enjoyed the rush and the cash was an added benefit. Maybe he was saving all the cash for some plans he had later in his life...again, I don't think it matters.
