I really liked it. It kind of reminded me of a Tarantino film. Except that if Tarantino had done it, it would have had 20-30 minutes of extra dialogue.

Lot of love for Lynch in Drive. The movie had that dreamlike LA haze that seemed evocative (but not derivative) of Mulholland Dr.

I posted this in the BD forum for Drive but I'll do it here too...
Got it off of bluray.com....seems like they used Epson glossy paper on this one...sooooo much better than the "meh" one we're getting.

Oh yes, I only post to be contrary. How dare anyone criticise the latest internet "best movie evar" lovefest. I forgot it was unfashionable to actually take a step back and think critically about these flavor of the month movies instead of just blurting out some blindly emotional nonsense like "the soundtrack was rad, man" or "it was, like, really deep and stuff, y'know?" or "man look at the awesome retro-looking poster, it really ties the room together"

I won't argue against your right to dislike the film, but at this point you're like a slightly more intelligent dan30oly.

Another thing I really appreciate about Drive is how its brilliance inspires its fans to make fun things.

Just finished watching this and I have to say that I liked it alot.
It had sprinkles of Walter Hill's The Driver, Michael Mann's Heat & Jean-Pierre Melville's Le Samourai.

Strevlac, I don't necessarily agree with your particular take on Drive, but I respect the fact that you're "all in" with your opinion.

Loved the film and I'm glad I went in knowing very little about it. Christina Hendricks was a nice surprise, Bryan Cranston was fantastic (and far better than Brooks, IMO), the violence was shockingly, well, violent, and the whole thing was beautifully shot. Really dug the music.

After watching it again last night - I like it even more now. Brooks is a real standout for me - I think he pushes the film even further with his performance.....not sure why he isn't getting more credit (although I don't think anyone is bashing his performance either) - I just love his scenes.

Strevlac is right, both about critics and drive. I loved the film for many reasons, mainly because of how deconstructive it is. but it is clear the film is taking off with audiences for all the wrong reasons. look at all the posters and people dressing up like the driver. he's not supposed to be a badass. That's all his internal life, to cover up that he's a sick maniac. it says it all that people keep comparing it to Pulp Fiction. it isnt a good comparison, QT is an american show-off while Winding Refn seems to be making fun of the west's tradition of bloodlust.....( I get the feeling they don't care if you like Drive, while QT is desperate to be liked.)

Re: Drive (Nicolas Winding Refn 2011) (Ryan Gosling, Carey Mulligan, Ron Perlman, etc
I'm sure I'll get crap for saying this but I agree with him honestly. I wanted to like this film but it just seemed like it was trying too hard with it's over the top style of violence. I'm not one to be bothered by violence in movies when it serves a purpose but this movie just seemed like it was doing it because it could. Like the director was getting off on the violence or something it was just weird to me. I agree with Maltin in that this movie felt like it was going for a lot of arty moments but the story just seemed weak. I don't really understand why so many people are in love with the film I guess.
The thing that's disappointing to me is like movies like this generally. I like throwback type films to different eras and I liked the cast of the movie quite a bit. I like Albert Brooks and I liked the fact that Bryan Cranston was given a decent role in this and Gosling is growing on me but the movie just didn't work for me.

Re: Drive (Nicolas Winding Refn 2011) (Ryan Gosling, Carey Mulligan, Ron Perlman, etc
It's a Los Angeles-set crime drama with offbeat characters and obvious influence from stylish flicks of the past. Comparisons to Quentin Tarantino and Michael Mann are inevitable, and to suggest that doing so is indicative of mass ignorance is a without merit. It's okay for a rational person to dislike Drive, but I don't see why its detractors here are so eager to insult those who appreciated it.
For instance, QT himself didn't seem to be a fan; he ranked Drive as a "Nice Try" in his 2011 list. While there's a chance he wasn't being sarcastic, it's a strange choice of words for a supporter. He didn't belittle anyone for liking it, either.
I think it'll grow on you, MoviePage; a few of my friends didn't appreciate it the first time around.

A question for those of you who loved the film: Was there anything about it you didn't particularly care for? I loved it, but a couple of things in it made it less than perfect for me. For example, the slow-mo sequence with Gosling carrying Benicio was really cheesy and unnecessary (it was already way obvious that the Driver had great affection for the boy), and Brooks's performance felt really unnatural and forced (I don't get the praise for him at all...in fact, I thought both Cranston and Perlman were better in their roles).
