Watched this today and I think I'm over it. I really hope the novelty doesn't wear off, though. Captain America 2 is still better.

I had just about the exact opposite reaction. I thought it was great when I saw it in August, but also thought it was derivative and had doubts about it holding up well to repeat viewings.
Just watched it for only the second time last night, and if anything it's only gotten better in the meantime. Watching it again I was struck by just how well crafted the film is- a Pixar level of craft. It juggles a whole lot of tricky stuff (goofy sci-fi exposition, an irreverent tone, pathos, action, etc) and keeps everything in the air.

Avengers was entertaining. But while I was in awe of what it accomplished, on neither of my two viewings did I ever feel like it really blew me away. I enjoy it, but it's nowhere near my 'top ten'. Guardians, OTOH, did knock me for a loop- both times. Although this second time I'm more willing to believe it's not just smoke and mirrors or hype. The heart & soul in this film feels genuine in a way that most other films like this just don't. Cap America comes closest in that dept, but this one still trumps it in terms of eye candy spectacle.
I'd say it's my favorite Marvel movie by a good margin at this point- with Winter Soldier a few respectable paces behind.
But both are far ahead of Avengers or any of the other solo films.

I'm the other way. This and the first Cap Ahole( but I turn it off after he is frozen) are the only Marvel movies I will re watch.

I love this movie, everything about it.

My Top-3 MCU flicks are:

Winter Soldier
GotG
Iron Man

It's a toss up for everything else.

Re: Guardians of the Galaxy (2014, Gunn) S: Pratt, Zaldana, Bautista, Cooper, Diesel

Just watched this for the first time and thought it was great. It had a very good action/humor/just plain fun balance to it.

I like the Marvel movies but have never read any of the comics or learned any backstory. This movie seems to tie in less (although I know the infinity stone stuff is relevant and i remember "the collector" from an after credit scene) and seemed like a stand-alone, fun time. I think I would prefer if the Avengers and the Guardians never cross over. The Guardians can just keep having adventures and we'll see how it affects the Avengers in their movies.

I thought Groot was really well done between being a badass when necessary (sticking branches up the guy's nose or impaling 5 guys at once) and being sweet with the fireflies and growing the flower for the little girl.

Captain American: TWS would have been a better movie without Captain America in it. The super serious thriller shots would quickly cut to two guys in stupid costumes and it would make me laugh constantly during that movie, it didn't work smoothly. But the bones for a great Three Days of the Condor remake were there.

I think if you replace Cap with a non-costumed protaganist Shield agent, you can't have him being as inherently "good" without it being eye-rolling. Cap is the perfect foil for this kind of bad guy/group.

I don't disagree, it'd require some modification, but for some reason the costumes really stood out as awkward in that one.

I thought the suits looked slamming, mate.

I especially dug Cap"s SHIELD suit.

I can't argue this, I do hate fun, unless it's entertaining.

The costumes were just fine. And the best part was that they ditched the awful costume Cap wore in The Avengers. The Night Ops suit was great and I loved seeing the return of the WWII costume for the grand finale.

My argument isn't against the costumes themselves, they were fine for what they were, it's against them being in costumes at all, it didn't fit the tone of the movie in quite a few places.

My nit was the costumes weren't colorful or gaudy enough.
As for fitting the material- this wasn't Tinker Tailor or Spy Who Came In From The Cold. It was very much a comic book spy movie, with comic book pitched complications and plenty of 'splosions.
I enjoyed it quite a bit, but it's not exactly John Le Carre.

Just finished watching this and I was bored all the way through. Boring action, boring protagonists, boring antagonists, and a boring story. I literally did not give a shit about anything happening at any time. The only good performance in the whole movie was by Michael Rooker. I was shocked at how awful the rest of the cast was. The only thing I enjoyed about the whole movie were the song selections.

Just a personal opinion.

I should have trusted my instincts when I didn't care for any of the trailers and saved myself $20.

You didn't want to even see it in the first place, and you only saw it because people here talked you into it, so I think there might be some confirmation bias going on here.

What is your opinion on the other MCU movies? Do you like them or hate them too?

I went in with lowered expectations. I thought that would have helped but it didn't.

The only other MCU films that I dislike are Iron Man 2 and Thor: The Dark World. My favorite thus far is Captain America: The Winter Soldier.

Re: Guardians of the Galaxy (2014, Gunn) S: Pratt, Zaldana, Bautista, Cooper, Diesel

I finally got to this on Thursday night.

Entertaining? Sure.
Great? no.
Good? At times.
Ultimately forgettable? Unfortunately, yes.

Even Pratt wasn't that good... and I've liked nearly everything I've seen him in.
I'm not trying to troll here. I just definitely didn't get as much out of this flick as most of you.

Rocket and Groot were fun, and there were some pretty funny lines, moments, etc.
It wasn't bad, I just feel like there's no reason to ever watch this one again.

Arbitrary score: Three talking raccoons out of five.

Pratt was pretty unremarkable in this, and I'll leave it at that.

Re: Guardians of the Galaxy (2014, Gunn) S: Pratt, Zaldana, Bautista, Cooper, Diesel

Well, he didn't chew the scenery the way Pacino, DeNiro, Oldman or half a dozen other more remarkable actors could have, but he sure was a likable lead to me.
I don't watch the show he's on so I wasn't familiar with him until this. Hard to tell what kind of range he'll have, but plenty of likable actors down through the years had long careers and made plenty of entertaining movies. I'm sure he'll end up displaying a range at least as broad as Harrison Ford's when he done.

Maybe it's because I'm a comic book nerd and names like the Kree have some history and meaning to me that embellishes something like this a little more. But I tried hard to look at it the second time with fresh eyes and I honestly thought it was extremely well crafted- beautifully paced, with twists and turns were coherent and logical, and all the stakes built to yield a satisfying conclusion. And it had a pleasingly irreverent (camp) tone which is almost always a huge bonus to me.

I get not liking it it happens.

I didn't like some of the scenes with the villains and Rooker kind of got on my nerves, otherwise it's probably the best of the MCU movies at this point, easily the best protagonists and most heart.
