Re: Last Movie You Watched Thread

They Shoot Horses, Don't They? - Jane Fonda stars in Sydney Pollack's film set during a depression era marathon dance contest. There is a lot that is interesting here, but ultimately I never really connected to the characters so my reaction to the end was muted. (Blu-ray)

The Ballad of Lefty Brown - I like Bill Pullman, and i like westerns, but Pullman's characterization is a little broad to the point where i think it undermines some of the other things in the movie. (Netflix)

The Killing of a Sacred Deer - Strange movie. I've seen the Lobster so that wasn't a great surprise, but that foreknowledge doesn't make the movie not strange. It's certainly a movie that I'll think about for a while afterwards. (iTunes)

It was on Tubi so I put up with the ads. Never got it from Netflix since it was not available on blu-ray.

Sarah Silverman Another comedian who can do drama and she was great in this and she shows all of her assets if you are into that sort of thing.

Mulan - While I wish I could have seen this on a premium movie screen, I was still looking forward to this more than some of the other Disney live action movies. Ultimately, I liked the first half, but thought the movie got increasingly ridiculous in the second. (Disney+)

The Limehouse Golem - Story of serial killer in Victorian London. There were individual moments that I liked in this movie, but the identity of the killer is pretty obvious very early on, and the movie lumbers on as if that is some big reveal in the end. (hulu)

Re: Last Movie You Watched Thread

Crash (1996) — I don't have a whole lot of experience with David Cronenberg's films and this is the first of his I've watched in a long time. Pretty obvious with the symbolism he was after but this isn't something I particularly engaged with despite the committed performances from the cast, although Elias Koteas was creepy good. No real plot with this one and by the end, while a unique movie for sure, not really sure I have much desire to watch again (at least anytime soon). ***/*****

Tenet (2020)
— Been a fan of Christopher Nolan's films but this one didn't quite do it for me. One, confusing story that was hard to follow at times (I got the gist), but beyond that, wasn't terribly entertained. Acting was shaky, Pattison was fine but really disappointed with John David Washington, though he's not helped by cliched dialogue. IDK, didn't hate it at all and maybe will revisit it one day, but this is easily Nolan's weakest film to date. ***½/*****

Re: Last Movie You Watched Thread

The Burrowers (2008) - a monster movie set in the old west, starring Clancy Brown and William Mapother (Lost), and with Doug Hutchison (The Green Mile) playing a loathsome character that is right in his wheelhouse. A frontier family is attacked in the night and presumably kidnapped by Indians. A search party heads out to find them, but discovers the real culprits are strange creatures that dwell underground. The story and direction and the overall look of the movie is pretty good, actually. The concept of the creatures and how they feed is effectively creepy. Unfortunately, the physical design of the creatures themselves is kind of lame, and their appearances onscreen are underwhelming. Still, the interaction of the human characters makes up the bulk of the movie and I liked that for the most part.

Got a free trial of Hulu just to see this.

A great drama with no easy satisfying conclusion

Too bad nobody will ever see or care to watch it.

From Hell Amazon Streaming
The Hughes Brothers' adaptation of the Alan Moore graphic novel concerning a prescient opium-addicted detective trying to discover the identity of Jack The Ripper.
I have the feature-filled Collector's Edition DVD, but missed the apparently out-of-print blu-ray. It's an excellent film that I believe is sadly under-rated. One of Johnny Depp's better (less hammy) performances, and a great supporting cast. Unrelentingly dark and grim (which probably explains a lot right there).

Friday the 13th Part 8: Jason Takes Manhattan Shout!
I remember seeing this originally in the theater and feeling disappointed by the misleading ad campaign, - Jason "took Manhattan" for all of about five minutes (the first two-thirds of the film is a snooze-fest set aboard a ship). A low budget, an aggressive MPAA and a lack of imagination further crippled the film. The passage of time hasn't improved it much. On the other hand, the disc looks terrific.

The Bird With The Crystal Plumage Arrow Video
Dario Argento's first film remains entertaining and Arrow provides their usual terrific presentation.

Total Recall 4K UHD Lion's Gate
My first time re-visiting the film in quite a few years. It remains a big noisy contraption with the occasional great idea thrown in, but it's still a fun watch overall. The 4k presentation is generally good and sometimes excellent, with just too much "teal" in the color timing for my tastes. The package includes an superb hour-long documentary on the rise and fall of Carolco Films.

The Mighty Macs (2011) - Carla Gugino stars as real life basketball coach Cathy Rush who won the women's basketball national championship at Immaculata college. It's a sports movie formula you seen (done better) dozens of times before. I don't think it helped that the players were largely treated as background extras only a few times briefly rising to stereotypes. While it sat on the shelf for awhile prior to it's release, it was made a few years after Miracle so they even put an "Again...:" scene in the movie. I'll watch Gugino in anything, but she was probably miscast here. (Prime)

War Dogs - Entertaining comedy/drama about two absurd real life international arms dealers. Hill is good; Teller is fine, and de Armas is charming in a thankless role. (VUDU)

Closely Watched Trains. Comedy. A slacker scores an easy job at the railway station and tries to lose his virginity. Twist: it takes place in Nazi-occupied Czechoslovakia.

Actually the movie has more depth than that and has a gentle sense of humor. It loves all its characters, even the station master who angrily shouts at his underlings but never punishes anyone, or the big boss whose speeches to the employees have to follow the Party line even when he knows better.

Spy Game - I had seen this, but I didn't remember anything about it. I noticed immediately how slick it looked, and then I saw directed by Tony Scott so that tracked. Both stars are good, but in the end the movie was kind of dumb. (HBO Max)

A bore maybe seeing Mick Jagger act again the only lure for this movie.

Elizabeth Debicki shows all of her assets though she is super skinny and tall.

I fell asleep during the final 20 minutes

Nothing special or good about this movie and boring too with nothing really happening.

Looking back now it is kind of cheesy and Penelope Ann Miller could not act for shit.

Maybe one of the rare times Ian McKellen is listed as the 4th or 5th lead in a movie.

It looked like a good HD transfer when I watched it on Blu-ray and maybe the collector's edition is not worth the money unless you are a die-hard fan.

Lipstick - Margaux Hemingway stars as a successful fashion model who is brutally raped by her sister's (14 year old Mariel) music teacher. The troubled Margaux was a beautiful woman, but she wasn't near the actress that her sister is. Certainly neither she nor the movie itself was good enough to pull off the ending, which is both horrifically disturbing and ridiculous. (VUDU)

A lot of action and graphic scenes

Wonder why Oldman decided to do this movie?

Easy $$$. Probably only had one day of filming, two at the most. Similar to the roles Bruce Willis takes with these Grindstone Entertainment flicks.

Singin' In The Rain (1952)

Absolutely love this film. It was great to get a chance to share it with people who had never seen it before.

Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice - I'm a contrarian on this film. I really liked it in the theater. And I liked the extended cut at home even more. Here's something too...I really liked what Jesse Eisenberg did as Luthor. And Ben Affleck was just OK as Bruce/Bats. (4K UHD)

While I slightly disagree, think it would've helped if he had the chance to have a movie of his own than sharing it with Superman.
