In fact I was so braced for a nauseous reaction, it actually took me a few minutes to realize the film wasn't actually causing one. I know that's just one user's experience, but I suspect it will be true of many others. Gamers, naturally, will dig it because they're eyes are probably well adjusted (or comfortably screwed up?), but as someone who knows the tedium of watching someone else play video games -- and the attendant eye-strain and/or boredome that goes along with it -- I can say I felt almost none of that with this show, since even the most expert gamers are too often stuck in "wandering around" mode which the movie pretty much eliminates entirely.

Still, I'd avoid the front rows just to be safe.
I'm glad someone else gets what's going on in my head about the video game playing vs. watching comparison.

I'll give it a shot (probably on rental) on your recommendation

can probably trace it back to something like Cannibal Holocaust but Blair Witch, intentionally or not, brought it main stream

They're only worth seeing IF someone can do something fresh with the format, which hasn't happened in forever, and especially not with an action film (occasional sequences aside). The horror variations are definitely played out. And as remarkable as HARDCORE is, I doubt it will spawn a new wave of copycats. At least I hope it doesn't, because it would be a tough act to follow, technically speaking. HARDCORE owes no debt to BLAIR WITCH, only to video games, which its makers are only too happy to admit. I'm sure it won't bring in Marvel or Star Wars money, but it should do modestly well with a long afterlife on disc or VOD.

One other thing I should note is that the main character in HARDCORE doesn't actually carry a camera around, or have it strapped on in any way that it can be broken free of him. Like most of his anatomy, it's installed , so there's few if any of those irriating moments from 'found footage' horror shows where a character runs around screaming with the camera randomly flailing all over the place while I puke my guts up waiting for it to stabilize. "Henry" does get knocked around a lot, so there are some blurry bits, but again, whatever they did technologically seems to have minimized the potential side effects. At least in me, anyway.

Also, unlike most of the horror shows, they actually spent a fair bit of money on elaborate sets and locations in this one (despite the trailers making it look like it was shot mostly in abandoned factories), so a lot of shots are designed to ensure the audience can take it all in, within reason.

Finally, and again unlike the horror movies that generally utilize the technique, HARDCORE is loaded front-to-back with extraordinary stunt work. As I mentioned way way back, it's all carefully designed so that geography and spatial relationships aren't obliterated by the "crazy" camerawork. The sheer logistics that went into the film should at least make it worth a view, even if it does have unfortunate side effects on some people. Presumably the Blu-ray will provide some decent behind-the-scenes pieces, because there are sequences in the film I'm still dying to know how they pulled off.

New trailer:

<iframe width="700" height="450" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/96EChBYVFhU" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>

The trailer does reveal a modest cameo appearance that I figured they might hold back, and sprinkles in a couple of shots from the wild climax (which isn't the van chase, by the way), but without enough context to really spoil anything. Thankfully they haven't given everything away in the preview -- at least not yet -- and they've given some good hints at the film's twisted sense of humour.

Interesting quote from Naishuller in the Hitfix interview:

"I've been working on it every day for the last few months," he told me, and the result is a film that has been almost totally visually re-invented since its festival premiere. He's working with a great DI post-production team, and the version of the movie that will be playing at the SXSW festival in March is way more vivid than what I saw. "It's like you saw it wearing sunglasses in Toronto."
Guess I'll have to check it out again to see what's different!

Tim Roth?

I'm still game for this looks hokey when they integrate Henry in some shots that he wasn't there for. The compositing of it... still... I'm cool to see something like that. Dunno if it'll be steady to not bore us w/ the premise but whatever.

As I recall, the premise is largely laid out in the first 10 minutes on that sky-lab thingy that "Henry" and his girl escape from. Even the villain shows up to explain most of his plan, and everyone's capabilities are more or less established there. Once they're back on the ground, it's pretty much attack after attack right through to the end, with bits of character development sprinkled here and there and only one extended breather that allows Sharlto Copley a sequence that will either have people digging the whole left-field nature of it or rolling their eyes, or maybe both.

weakling.

Seriously though... I kind of wish I knew what that felt like. I don't get queasy w/ imagery moving around like some people. It doesn't make sense to me honestly.

I'm not digging the fish-eye perspective. I'd rather watch someone play a first person shooter on Twitch.

Saw the trailer right before The Witch and when it was over all I could do was laugh. Wow that was bad.
Now The Witch on the other hand....

This movie reminds me of the days back in the 1990's when FMV video games were popular.

Yea, this isn't pretentious, (pseudo) intellectual, or artsy, so it's definitely not for you.

I wonder if this will be played in theaters with D-Box seats... seems like the perfect fit for that technology.

That thought definitely crossed my mind at TIFF, and the googolplex across the street from me is suitably equipped, so I'm hopeful. . Now The Witch on the other ha--zzzzzzzz . . .

Just know that the trailer is cut so damn quick it actually accentuates that feeling, whereas the film does have crazy kinetic moments but it's a lot more fluid than that trailer was... I loved the movie but did feel certain parts looked like shit (dark, low res) so I'm intrigued by the work they've done since TIFF and was going again on opening night anyhow but now I'm even more pumped.

That would be highly unlikely. I have disliked every Malick film that came after The Thin Red Line. Sorry to disappoint you.

Gotta admit it's almost impossible to put together a trailer that doesn't amplify what's already on screen, possibly to the degree that some folks who might otherwise tolerate the film just fine could be put off before they even give it a chance!
