I'd still rather have the 15/70 .

Re: HBO's 'Games of Thrones' - Two episodes IMAX screenings (one week Jan. 23)

Did no one else go to see this? I thought it was an interesting experiment. It really showed how different TV shows and movies are. When I watch on TV I think the action scenes would look better on a big screen. When I saw it in the theater I realized how many two shots of people talking there are. Still glad I went.

Why do people pay to see anything in an Imax theater that is not shot on 15 perf 70 mm?

Nothing is going to be projected in 15/70, IMAX are done making prints as of the end of last year. The LIEMAX theaters in multiplexes are just slightly bigger with a bass-y sound systems. They're just IMAX in name.

Speaking for myself, I wanted to see Games of Thrones on a big screen. I knew it would be sub-optimal but so what? I enjoyed it.

It was playing at the Navy Pier IMAX in Chicago which isn't the typical chain based IMAX installation, its the real deal 60 ft high IMAX screen. And it was glorious! No joke, I would pay IMAX prices to watch every episode premiere on that screen.

I burned through season 4 last week just so I could watch these two episodes in IMAX. It was phenomenal.

It played at the Majestic in Silver Spring. A still far better (and more expensive) IMAX experience than Tysons.

Guardians of the Galaxy
Gravity
Transformers 4

3 examples of how directors are using digital IMAX to enhance the filmgoing experience.

Were the screenings not very successful? I've heard literally ziltch about it since it played...you'd think it would have gotten tons of PR if the Box Office numbers were good.

It has grossed $1.9m. Sort of a middling success, but a success no less.

It did well. Ask yourself, who would spend $15+ dollars to watch two episodes that are a year old and available right now on HBO On Demand? Just GoT fanatics. Even the "exclusive" IMAX Season 5 trailer was leaked and then officially release on that Friday.

Weren't those all shot traditionally (digitally) and then retrofitted to digital IMAX thereafter?

$2M for two episodes of a television show that aired seven-ish months ago. Furthermore, one had to pay premium IMAX pricing to see it. I'd call that a big success. You think there is any other show out there that would get people to leave their living rooms and into an IMAX theatre to watch old episodes?

But that's the point. People, meaning the general public, would still fork out money to go see it in theaters. I'm surprised they don't actually do that, with a season premiere or something, and do it as an NCM event in regular theaters.

The Walking Dead audience is huge and the average fan doesn't care about its lack of cinematic qualities.

Agreed 100% in terms of it not being cinematic... At all (as much as the WD hardcore fans would love to think of it as such I am sure). Unfortunately I think WD has more of a Joe Six Pack drone-esque audience thus I am sure people would still flock to see it at the theater.

Which is precisely why they wouldn't bother going to an IMAX theater to watch it.

I never said show it in IMAX.

We have a local theater that shows Walking Dead live every Sunday that it's on. Since they can't charge admission, it's first come first serve or you can reserve a seat by buying a drink ticket (it's a drafthouse-style theater that serves local microbrews and wine). It's their biggest money making event and the line regularly wraps around the block. It isn't a huge theater, nor does it have a huge screen, but things like this are huge for them.

Spoiler:

When I said Game of Thrones wasn't huge, I meant it could have been some sort of crazy phenomenon when it came to Game of Thrones. It did very well, but it wasn't huge.

Well go ahead and change the subject of what we're talking about if it makes you feel like a big man. You're just lucky a minute has passed and it's too late for me to stealth edit my post to make it look like I was paying attention.

Well it was for two old episodes that aired a long time ago. When the S4 finale did originally air last June, the Cineplex Odeon chain sold tickets to it (the screening was free, but you had to buy a $10 food voucher) and the screenings were completely sold out. And these were not enhanced screenings in any way, with a better sound mix or anything; it was literally taking the cable feed and projecting it into onto the theatre's screen.

Being cinematic is meaningless. There are movies released that are not cinematic. Without question Walking Dead would make money.
