Whiplash is in the Adapted Screenplay category because it was adapted from a short film made with the identical same screenplay it was nominated for.

Ha! I like that a movie that took the director 12 years to make was beaten by a film the director tried to make in a single shot.

Not that I care much about the actual winners/losers... but I have no problem with Birdman guy winning Best Director. He did a masterful job I thought. Glad Wes Anderson didn't win - he's just been recycling the same stuff every movie.
