Just got back from our Atmos showing and man this shit is an instant classic, so haters, I don't know what to really tell you.
As far as the Atmos - yeah, I understand everything Joe said in his speech in the beginning - I understood it the first two times, too, so it could just mean that some viewers didn't catch it, which doesn't mean there's anything wrong with the mix. It's not like we can get the remote control and rewind it or put subtitles on it.

Not at all. Furiosa is a great character and the quest is hers. However, Max is the character we follow and we see how Furiosa's quest affects Max. It's the same thing that happened in Mad Max 2. The story was about Papagallo's tribe and their struggle to escape with their fuel. Their opponents were Humongous' gang. Max just wanted some fuel and to be on his merry way. They eventually ask him to stay and he refuses to help but eventually feels compelled to see their quest through.
In Mad Max: Fury Road, a more feral Max has no interest in the plight of Furiosa and the Five Wives. They are trying to escape Immortan Joe and his Warboys, while also seeking the Green Place. Once again, it's not Max's quest. It's theirs. But the quest eventually affects him and he's the one that steers them toward claiming rulership over Immortan Joe's land.
Just because the actual story isn't about Max, does not mean he isn't the lead. Hell, he actually goes through the classic Joseph Campbell story structure in MM2 and MMFR.
Oh and the original title of this movie was always Fury Road. The sequel that was intended to be shot back-to-back with this one is the one that was to be called Furiosa.
I hear this argument a lot and it's false. Though he doesn't get long stretches of dialogue or conversations (neither did Max in the previous three movies), he is constantly chattering away. Like when he was tied to Nux' car. Max is bitching and complaining throughout that entire sequence. He complains about his car being stolen and then his blood, he yells at Nux' buddy when he almost hits him with a lance, he's almost always demanding his car back whenever the Interceptor is scene. The thing is, until the end of the money, Max doesn't give a rats ass about anyone but himself. So he doesn't bother to engage people that he mostly sees as obstacles he needs to overcome or dead weight he needs to cut loose. So his dialogue reflects that state of mind.
That was my favorite scene and the one that truly cemented this flick as his in my eyes. Everyone looks upon him in awe when he returns.

Brilliant take on why Furiosa is not only a compelling character, but why representation matters.
I am just about the biggest advocate for “representation matters” there is, but as a white woman I never really felt it applied to me all that much. Watching Fury Road, I realized how wrong I was. I’ve been this way my entire life and I’ve never felt “handicapped.” I’m disabled, yes – there’s shit I just can’t do, but an invalid I am not. For the most part I’ve always approached life with a “figure out how to do it and just get it done” attitude; I am loathe to admit I can’t do anything and I never give up without exhausting all the possibilities available to me. Watching Fury Road, I felt like I was watching my own struggle brought to life (albeit in a very fantastical setting), and I don’t think I ever realized how truly profound that could be for me.
Watch Furiosa load a shotgun. Watch Furiosa punch Max in the face, with her nubbins. Watch Furiosa drive a semi tractor trailer. Watch Furiosa fire a long shot, using Max’s shoulder to stabilize the gun barrel, as an alternative to using two hands! Watch Furiosa do anything you can do, but better, and with half the number of fingers.
The effortless manner in which this film has presented a character’s disability is incredible. I literally could not ask for anything more. It’s ubiquitous. No big deal. Her body is never a plot point. It is simply allowed to be.

That was actually real working rig, guitar, bass, amps, even the flame thrower. It was a local Australian guitarist playing (the character has a mask on, made of his dead mother's face), and during filming, he'd play riffs from Zeppelin, AC/DC, etc, but they obviously dubbed in something else later.

I'm surprised no one has talked about this (unless I missed it) but Miller will be including a B&W version on the Fury Road BD. In fact, he says, the B&W version is his "preferred" version. He even makes reference towards the whole teal and orange that seems to be the new trend - Fury Road being no exception.

“We spent a lot of time in DI (digital intermediate), and we had a very fine colorist, Eric Whipp. One thing I’ve noticed is that the default position for everyone is to de-saturate post-apocalyptic movies. There’s only two ways to go, make them black and white — the best version of this movie is black and white, but people reserve that for art movies now. The other version is to really go all-out on the color. The usual teal and orange thing? That’s all the colors we had to work with. The desert’s orange and the sky is teal, and we either could de-saturate it, or crank it up, to differentiate the movie. Ooooh. Yeah. That's nice in B&W. I did love the color version though but it was pretty forced into a color template w/ the environment.
If he learned from this one... let us hope he gets another environment for this Wasteland that has a "fresher" color palette to sit in.

Once worldwide grosses, streaming rentals, and fans buying BRs are factored , this movie should make back enough money to justify a sequel. Maybe a lower budgeted one though.

The movie looks to have a solid 4 day weekend, and I hope it has real legs, but it is a fucking shame this is not making more money. The most fun I have had in the theater in a long time. Rare that all three of my teenage kids agree on a movie being good.

^ It's a shame that R rated movies are such a hard sell in the summer time. Perhaps if this had come out in late September/early October it would have had more legs.

Just got back from seeing it a second time. Despite knowing all of the story beats and character arcs, I was still incredibly invested in everything that was happening. It really is a masterpiece. I look forward to seeing it several more times in the next month or so while it is still in theaters.

My son and I saw this yesterday and both really liked it. Just an excellent action movie. The theater that we saw it in was actually pretty crowded, so I think positive word-of-mouth is gonna help it out quite a bit.

Saw this in 3-D IMAX. I'm not a fan of 3-D as the cheap looking CG shots near the end proved me right but the shot at the beginning of the boys working on the machine/winch showed that using it right can draw you into a film. I'm normally a lean back kind of film watcher, but whenever there was an action scene I leaned in, wanting more. Taking it all in.
That tanker explosion at the end? one of the best expolsions ever. Not just a static shot. So much movement in that shot. The other cars, Max swinging past. Simply amazing. Would love to see if the bluray has a section based on that alone.

Saw it with the wife Friday around noon. The theater was pretty empty, but that's to be expected for that time.
We had a lot of fun. It was a little thin on plot substance, but everything else was great. The guitarist was a blast, the stunts were incredible, and the cars were very cool. I thought Max was in it enough, although I do think some of his grunting could have been changed out for dialogue, improving some scenes.
I don't have any interest in seeing it in B&W, but a no-dialogue viewing could be pretty neat.

The whole kidnapped queen of another kingdom becomes lead general of the enemy's kingdom, betrays him and seeks redemption for delivery of the man's enslaved wives by returning them to her paradise of a home kingdom.. Pursued by the king and his brothers, generals and leaders of their own kingdoms, to retrieve what they feel is rightfully theirs and the unfortunate sacrifice of the younger, finally perfect, son/brother. All told in maybe 10 words
it was kind of nice having a movie that largely left figuring out motives to the viewer.I refuse to see this in theaters again because I had a shitty experience at mine (I may as well have watched it on a 22" monitor from 6 feet away with mono sound turned to 40%) but want to watch it again.

Well, the GF wants a movie marathon, so we're seeing Ex Machina, Avengers 2, and Mad Max (fourth time already) today. Who am I to say no to a movie marathon like that?
