Mara Jade. Callin' it. But of course all promotional material will call her Stephanie Johnson.

I have to wonder how big a role these new characters (per THR, at least three) will have. If this is the last chapter with this particular group of established characters, they really should be focusing on serving them without cluttering up things even further. Rey's mom playing a role in her arc makes sense, I suppose. I agree she's a bit young, but Russell would be a nice choice for that.

Ooh, I like Keri Russell.
And good news about Cardington Sheds. On Yavin IV, Lando rebuilds the rebel fleet, while Rey trains Jedi in nearby jungle.

'Star Wars': Billy Dee Williams Reprising Role as Lando Calrissian
The actor is returning for 'Episode IX.'
Billy Dee Williams is returning to a galaxy far, far away.
The actor, who famously played the galactic gambler Lando Calrissian, will reprise the role for Star Wars: Episode IX, the next Star Wars installment from Lucasfilm.
Chatter about Williams joining the production, which begins later this summer, increased in recent days when the actor bowed out of an upcoming sci-fi and pop culture convention citing a conflict with a movie schedule. Sources confirm to The Hollywood Reporter that Williams will indeed be returning to the Star Wars big screen for the first time since 1983’s Return of the Jedi. The character made his suave debut in Empire Strikes Back.
Williams has in recent years returned to the role that fuels his appearances on the convention circuit, voicing Calrissian in various cartoon series and video games.
The character is one of the more popular personages in the Star Wars universe and appeared in a major way in this year’s Solo: A Star Wars Story. Donald Glover slipped on the cape to play a younger Calrissian.
Episode IX is being directed by J.J. Abrams and will reunite Daisy Ridley, John Boyega, Oscar Isaac and Adam Driver, among others. Keri Russell is one of the new additions to the cast. The film opens Dec. 20, 2019.

I wonder if this was the plan all along, or if they realized with Ford and Fisher both gone, they'd need another classic character to fill the gap.
Cause we all know we'll see Luke's ghost at least once, that's not a spoiler, just common sense.

“Of course I’d love to see Lando,” Johnson said. “In terms of Lando, I briefly considered — would he work in the Benicio [del Toro] part, [DJ].” If you’ve seen the movie you know DJ is the morally ambiguous hacker/codebreaker who helps and betrays Finn and Rose within the span of a few hours, helping them escape prison on Canto Bight, but then selling them out to the Imperial First Order forces when the first opportunity presents itself.
“I don’t think you would ever buy that Lando would just completely betray the characters like that and have that level of moral ambiguity,” Johnson explained. “Cause we love Lando and you’d come into it with that [expectation]. And also, DJ, the character that they met, for the purposes of Finn’s character, had to be a morally ambiguous character that you’re not sure about, that you’re guessing about, and we already know that we love the character of Lando so it just wouldn’t have played in that part story wise.”

That Rian Johnson even considered having Lando betray his friends to the Empire (again) just proves what a complete fuckwit he is.

I doubt Lando will have a big role in this. Billy Dee just turned 81. I'm guessing he will probably get maybe 1 week of work at most and then call it a day.

I saw him on the Arsenio Hall Show a few years ago (ironically he took a swipe at Disney because they didn't ask him back for Episode 7). He was probably 78 at the time and just seemed very slow in his speech, and that is not the Lando I want to see. The guy was a total ladies man, and now he is going to be that analogy in The Wedding Singer, "Nobody wants to see a 60 year old Fonzie!" My demo is the reason they are bringing back Lando, and it actually turns me off more from this movie because what they have done with Luke, Leia and Han so far in this Trilogy. What happened to kill the past?

Except he didn't. If you read the quote, he's talking about the process of writing the movie. It seems clear that as the story was taking shape, he considered whether Lando would work for the character that became DJ in the final script, but when it became clear that DJ needed to be the kind of morally ambiguous character that would betray the good guys, Lando was out.

Maybe Keri Russell is Jaina Skywalker? I remember "Mara" was supposed to be around 50-60, so another woman should be confirmed soon.

Cast announced:
https://www.starwars.com/news/star-w...cast-announced
Returning cast members include Daisy Ridley, Adam Driver, John Boyega, Oscar Isaac, Lupita Nyong’o, Domhnall Gleeson, Kelly Marie Tran, Joonas Suotamo, and Billie Lourd. Joining the cast of Episode IX are Naomi Ackie and Richard E. Grant, who will be joined by veteran Star Wars actors Mark Hamill, Anthony Daniels, and Billy Dee Williams, who will reprise his role as Lando Calrissian.
The role of Leia Organa will once again be played by Carrie Fisher, using previously unreleased footage shot for Star Wars: The Force Awakens. “We desperately loved Carrie Fisher,” says Abrams. “Finding a truly satisfying conclusion to the Skywalker saga without her eluded us. We were never going to recast, or use a CG character. With the support and blessing from her daughter, Billie, we have found a way to honor Carrie’s legacy and role as Leia in Episode IX by using unseen footage we shot together in Episode VII.”

Well that's better than an offscreen death for Leia I guess - I'll have faith her end will be handled with dignity.
Interesting they would confirm Hamill this soon. Perhaps to smooth over the effect of his fate in TLJ?

Did anyone think Luke would not be in IX? But I guess since JJ didn't even want to deal with Luke in VII, people may have thought JJ would ignore Luke in IX as well.
No Keri Russell?

Well, someone's probably going to catch him on set while they're shooting, so better to just announce it now instead of trying to shroud it in secrecy until it's inevitably spoiled.

Hamill being back isn’t at all surprising to me. Probably as a Force Ghost. I still wish things would have turned out different with his character but we’ll see how they use him.
