Well, I get to tell my kids that I got to see the last movie ever released in 70mm and the last movie that'll ever get released as a roadshow. RIP, celluloid, but it sure goes out in style. Kind of shame that QT's opportunity to shoot on 70mm was for a movie which was all but a filmed play in a confined setting, but hey, who am I to argue? Phenomenally well-cast, tightly scripted, and laced with Tarantino's signature black humor, this was a winner. Jackson won't get an Oscar nom, but he deserves one. It was long and perhaps self-indulgent, but I find it hard to quibble with self-indulgence in 70mm. If a lost art has to go, what a way to go out. Glad that for once, it actually came to my neck of the woods. Sold out showing too. I'm not deluded enough to think that the likes of this and Interstellar can really renew any actual interest in celluloid, but it sure is fun to dream.
The guy behind me laughed like a demented hyena at every violent act the film depicted. The more disturbing, the harder he laughed. It scared the hell out of me.

Sorry, but this movie just didn't work for me at all. The first hour or so just dragged and dragged. If it's going to be dialogue driven only, it better be great dialogue. And it just wasn't. The film did pick up nicely during the last hour. And quite possibly the most violence in any QT film. I will say that even though Jennifer Jason Leigh's character was a criminal, and crazy. I found the scenes where she got elbowed in the face, punched and hot soup thrown in her face quite disturbing. I know QT was going for a laugh, I just didn't find it funny.

Maybe he's just uncomfortable w/ violence towards women?
Personally.. I don't give a shit who gets hit/killed/whatever. I just want it to add something of worth to the film.

Naw, QT was going for laughs - hence the smart-ass remarks after he hits her every time... instead of just saying what he wants from her, ie. to shut up.

It picked up for me considerably at the end once the standoffs started to happen, but by then I just wasn't really invested in any of the characters other then just wanting to know who's lying to who.
Probably my least favorite movie of his, right down there with Death Proof. Just not my type of movie, but i'm ok with that.

I thought that the way the camera stayed directly on Daisy's face for a few of those early shots would lead to some sympathizing for her. But whoa, she stayed hellbent on destruction til the very end.
And speaking of Daisy and the camera, I can't wait to see that guitar sequence again. *I couldn't catch how the camera-movement was able to constantly retain her in the foreground while the cabin's locations shifted in the background.
*Since that was the scene that resumed after the intermission, I was too distracted by all the bobbleheads in the audience who were returning from their bathroom breaks.

So who is the LEAST hateful of the eight?
Of the eight principle leads, Oswaldo Mobray (Tim Roth)
I think is a money man for the gang and not intent on
killing someone day to day if he can help it.
Everybody is hateful for something but who is the LEAST
hateful do you think?

As you said, GREAT tone that it sets up this brutal ride. I wouldn't be surprised if QT told Ennio to "Do it like you did with DePalma".

I absolutely loved it. I thought it moved, and can't imagine what isn't going to be in the wide version. Wish the Cinerama Dome would show it, the screen I saw it on was too small. The only things that distracted me were a couple of continuity errors, and it took a while to get used to Tim Roth's Christoph Waltz / Terry Thomas hybrid impression. I'd absolutely see it again.

Maybe it's just my old eyes but I saw the focus zoom in and out. She was blurry, then it was blurry. It took me out of the movie as a visual trick.

Yeah, for all that shit about having everyone in frame, they could have utilized some deep focus for certain scenes.
Also, that stagecoach driver got the shaft. He's one of the fucking people in the cabin, does 90% of the work, yet isn't considered one of the eight.

Saw this yesterday and loved it. It's Tarantino's love letter to John Carpenter's "The Thing", minus the horror and done as a Western. I was practically giddy seeing all of the parallels.
Not a weak actor in the bunch, although Tatum felt a little out of place. Luckily that didn't matter for too long.
Jackson is a good actor, but he's only ever great when he's working with QT.
Morricone's music was fantastic. Love that it wasn't typical Western stuff, but more in line with his horror work, especially with those unused "Thing" cues.
I'm going to catch the 70mm version again tomorrow. As with every QT movie, this one requires a second viewing, but I already feel like it's my fav of the year. The guy is a genius.

The studios do realize that very few directors have the cinephile factor that Tarantino has right?

How was the presentation at Arclight? I'm going there tomorrow for my second viewing. Grossmont's screen was massive, but the presentation was marred by focus issues. It was like the bottom half of the screen was completely out of focus while the top was clear as day. If I knew it was fixed, I'd go back there in a second.

I was listening to the soundtrack earlier (Gotta pick it up soon) and noticed that the credits-sequence is made up of Two of Morricone's tracks. "I Quattro Passeggeri" starts the scene, but a loud, boastful track gets cranked up as the horse-carriage draws nearer. I'm guessing that track was "L'Ultima Diligenza di Red Rock".
As you said, GREAT tone that it sets up this brutal ride. I wouldn't be surprised if QT told Ennio to "Do it like you did with DePalma".

Saw it in 70mm over the weekend - and loved it.
I'm a big Tarantino fan, so I guess I'm biased a bit.
Sure, maybe it didn't need to be 3 hours to tell the story that was told, but I love listening to his characters talk to one another.
Enjoy...

Drove a couple hours to see this today. I have at least liked all of Tarantino's films, and while like most of them this was indulgent as well, I liked it more and it felt less self indulgent than anything since Jackie Brown (if we treat Kill Bill as one film). For me there weren't nearly as many "ok, get on with it" moments as there were especially in Basterds or Django.

I believe at least partly true
As for the rest. Warren may or may not have been making it up just to goad the general. I believe his character was capable of it. If he was making it up the flashbacks would be false and just a peek into Warren's mind as he made it up.
