It was beautiful, great acting, equal parts funny and tense...but also very dull in parts. Overall I enjoyed it, but I doubt I'll ever watch it again, unlike a lot of his other movies. This one really suffered from pacing issues and poor editing imo...

Interesting sentiment - it was good but you'll never watch it again. I'm almost inclined to feel the same way. Like I mentioned in the other thread, it's his best looking movie. But the story and dialogue were his worst yet. Makes me appreciate Django all the more.
And I hate Walter Goggins.

Who gives a shit about his name. And I did say on the other thread he's good in The Shield and Justified. But despite the fact he's good in those TV shows, I pretty hate him in the movies he's in. Maybe he needs to stay in TV.

Whoa, did Walton Goggins fuck your mother? Not get any good presents today? Someone's mad. Spell his name right because that's how you SPELL IT. And so you don't sound like a dickhead.

Hmm.. wondering if I should skip the 70mm showing. I still love the longer cut of Django and strongly prefer it over the theatrical release.

You'll have to decide for yourself, I saw complaints about the first 90 minutes but thought they were fine personally.

Oh, and QT seriously needs to make a movie where the "N" word is not a significant force in the dialogue. Not a politically correct stance, it is just really stale.
I actually think it might be time for QT to direct someone else's script.
Glad I saw it, but because of the Roadshow experience not the movie itself. Wish it had been a fresh print on Ben Hur of LOA actually. Not a movie I would ever watch again.
2.5 stars for me.

The 70mm Roadshow Experience was fantastic, especially since I attended a showing at the (historic) Grand Lake Theatre in Oakland, CA. If there is one place to see the 70mm print at, it is there.
Even though I loved the film, I agree with a few posters here on some pacing issues, especially early on.
Looking forward to seeing this again in 70mm on Sunday with one my best friends!

Just saw the 70mm roadshow and I thought it was fantastic. I didn't have a problem with it being slow say unlike the "international edit" of Death Proof. I'd rank it in the middle of his filmography.
And I can confirm that Academy Award Winner Walton Goggins did, in fact, fuck trespoochies' mother.

I loved it.
Great acting from everyone. Dialogue was not Tarantino's best but still easily Top 5 dialogue in movies this year.
I don't mind all the gore. It wasn't that excessive, it was just at the end.
So, what parts were additional to the Roadshow?
BTW, my projection wasn't that good. A little blurry at the top, but the closeups looked just beautiful. When you think about 4K, and 8K, and all of that HD stuff, you have this film and start missing it.

5.5/10
At least 30 minutes too long... probably closer to 45 minutes. The writing was weak and again there were many scenes where the dialogue took too long to get to the point - even though we knew where it was headed for a while. QT continues to be in love with his own writing and really wants to drag scenes out to put them on display.
The acting was decent except for Russell (who I normally like) and Goggins - who were trying too hard to the point it just felt like actors acting in a movie. The gore was overdone and comic-like. And I agree that the n-word is way over-used in this (does QT need to see a therapist about this?). QT narrating was a wrong choice.
There was a much better movie in there somewhere, but it needed to be tightened up and more efficient and taken more seriously. The general story itself was alright and has similarities to Reservoir Dogs - but he veered off from that and turned it into Evil Dead.

I agree there was a lot of Evil Dead influence at the end.
Funny thing is that in terms of the Major, I think the story about the son was largely BS, but I think the ONE thing that was not a lie is I believe that the letter from Lincoln was actually real. One of the elements I liked about the movie, the one thing he admits is a lie is actually true.
I was completely unspoiled going in, but I expected every one to die in the end.
One thing about QT is that even when you love his movies (and I am a fan) each one hits people differently and every one has their favorites and ones they do not like, to the point that one's person favorite can be another's least favorite. Suggests his movies are more "individual" than they have a reputation for.
One thing that disappointed me slightly was that I thought the Madsen character would turn out to be someone actually famous like Buffalo Bill or Jesse James, someone like that.

I thought this was pretty damn good.
Some of it was a little slow but I think it worked to the film's advantage. The acting was pretty solid, though Russell played it up a bit. I disliked Walton Goggins character for the first chunk of the movie and loved him in the second half.
It was very beautiful and the score is fantastic. Also, during a pretty big sequence a cue from Carpenter's The Thing is used. There are a lot of parallels between this and The Thing. Also, of course Reservoir Dogs. This movie very much feels like a horror flick at times. The pacing makes sense to me if you think of it in terms of a horror movie.
This was my experience as well.

I didn't think so. For me this was a quick three hours. This is coming from someone who feels that Django could use a 30 minute trim and Kill Bill should have been one 2 hour film.
I thought the writing was much better, less Tarantinoesque and to the point than his previous four films.
I will not deny that QT has a love affair with his own writing but I thought he was much more restrained in this film.
The acting by Russell and Goggins was very exaggerated and I think that was done on purpose. It reminded me of Brad Pitt in Inglourious Basterds mixed with Agatha Christie type characters.
I agree with all of this except that I would think that in the 1870's the n-word was something people said and the movie is trying to make a point on race relations.
As a fan of Quentin Tarantino's first three films I have not been impressed with everything he has done since then. After Jackie Brown everything became about style and nihilism over substance. The Hateful Eight does have a lot of style and it is a very nihilistic film, but unlike Tarantino's previous four films this one to me feels different and has something to say. It's a wacky combination of mystery, western, horror and black comedy that did not feel like it was 3 hours long. I love the way Tarantino took advantage of the Panavision scope frame not just for the exteriors, but more importantly to capture the claustrophobia and tension of the interiors. The Ennio Morricone score which feels more like a giallo is excellent. The acting and dialogue, although sometimes cartoonish, is great. To me this was an all around well made film on all fronts.

Caught the roadshow version today. If you have one near you, this is the way to see the movie. It really felt like something special. I give this version an A for presentation and a B for content. There were definitely pacing issues. However, I still found the movie enjoyable and way better than the piece of crap that was Death Proof.
However
Q: Was that Tarantino's voice doing the narration?
