Re: X-Men: Apocalypse (Singer, 2016) — The Spoiler Filled Reviews Thread

There are currently 3 X-Men titles. One has Old Man Logan, one has X-23 as Wolverine and the third has Sabretooth. Wolverine is all over X-Men. He is to the X-Men as Cap is to the Avengers, Superman to JLA. The teams just feel lacking without them. And I think also that is reflective in the movies without him.

Havent seen Apocalypse yet tho, hopefully this weekend.

Re: X-Men: Apocalypse (Singer, 2016) — The Spoiler Filled Reviews Thread

I saw this while on vacation in Thailand last week.

I didn't love it, but I was entertained. The highlight for this prequel series for me has always been the McAvoy and Fassbenber relationship as Charles and Erik. They were both great here. Funny how we saw in this film how Charles grows bald. Liked the Jackman cameo even though it was dialogue free.

So I haven't read much about FOX's future plans with the X-Men brand. Are they still going to continue making prequels? I did read recently that Patrick Stewart will be back as older Charles in Wolverine 3.

Not quite sure I understood the post credits epilogue.

It was, for years, sort of a running joke with Marvel Comics that they would stick a Wolverine guest appearance into shitty comic books in order to boost sales.

By the early 1990s, it was pretty much mandatory that some combination of Wolverine, The Punisher, and Ghost Ridet would show up in the first six months of any new title that was launched.

You had to admire Wolverine. For a crazedd loner, that guy sure got around.

so how are they going to handle the official recasting of Wolverine? because they will at some point... will they just recast, or will they have some elaborate setup, like he falls in a vat of acid, and there is some magical or scientific mumbo jumbo that happens so when he heals he heals looking like a different (but younger and similar) version of Logan?

Jackman as Wolverine is the main component of the X-Men movies that most fans want to see. They love him in that role. Without him the movies are a tougher sell.

Look at the numbers adjusted for inflation...

X-Men: The Last Stand Fox $306,996,900

X2: X-Men United Fox $305,848,800

X-Men Fox $250,395,500

X-Men: Days of Future Past Fox $241,381,100

X-Men: First Class Fox $156,026,100

X-Men: Apocalypse Fox $124,497,800

That's a pretty steep dropoff after the X-Men movies with Jackman as Wolverine. Two of the X-Men movies WITH Jackman are over $300 Million adjusted for inflation, and the other two are in the mid $200's. Huge successes. The ones without him? Not so much.

Using the adjusted for inflation numbers do not help your case not matter how you want to justify it. No studio head gives a shit about those numbers because they are not real dollars in their pocket. This movie will under perform and that may or may not affect future movies.

Bring in his clone/daughter X-23.

"Girlverine."

Well.. considering he survived burns from the Hiroshima blast that could reach him and he turned back to how he was... I think a recasting will eventually just be that... a recasting.

It occurred to me that that could be where they were going with the "Sinister getting Wolverine's blood" post credits tag.

Re: X-Men: Apocalypse (Singer, 2016) — The Spoiler Filled Reviews Thread

I pretty much despise Wolverine as a character but yeah, for all intents and purposes he *is* the X-Men to most audiences.

Apropos of something but remember the Image Comics revolution of the early 90s, when all the hotshot Marvel artists broke off to form their own company... and guess what? EVERY TEAM BOOK HAD THEIR OWN WOLVERINE RIPOFF. It was so entirely sad and pathetic, save for the millions upon millions most of them made as a result (when they could get their books released on-time, which was rare).

Or they can do a Cable-Wolverine storyline, too.

Yeah...

Letsee...

Cyberforce had "Ripclaw"
WildCATs had "Warblade"
Youngblood had "Cougar" (Wolverine without the claws) and Kombat (Klingon Wolverine). And Liefeld also had Bloodwolf, which was Lobo Wolverine (ironic since Lobo was DC's attempt to make their own Wolverine.)

My favorite, though was Liefeld with all of the Cable knock-offs. Chapel was Black Cable. Sentinel was Black Cable II. Supreme was Superman Cable. Battlestone was Pigtail Cable. Cabot was Ponytail Cable. Prophet was Cable with a Midget Jack Kirby for a sidekick.

Re: X-Men: Apocalypse (Singer, 2016) — The Spoiler Filled Reviews Thread

Reading all those Image character names gave me douche chills.

Bear in mind I bought all these books. At first, anyhow. The only ones I stuck with were Spawn, Savage Dragon, and all the Alan Moore work (1963 and Supreme were outstanding, only because they had little to nothing to do with Liefeld's talents). Funny though how Image today is a far cry from the spectacular creative shitstorm of 1992-1996.

Warblade was my favorite. He was more of a T-1000 character rather than Wolverine rip-off.

I remember thinking as a kid how I KIND OF wanted to like them cuz they were shiny and new and more violent and whatever else but they were pretty boring a lot of those Image characters.

Battlestone and Cabot looked and acted like Cable and Stryfe.

Sentinel was more like a mix of Nick Fury and Iron Man.
Prophet...I dunno what he was supposed to be a copy of. He looked like Shatterstar.
Chapel was just an extreme anti-hero, Punisher logo on his face.

Colonel Bravo aka Red Cable

I bought 1963 #1 because I was collecting all the Image first issues at the time thinking they were going to be worth a million dollars in the future. I think I was too young to understand the homage/parody and dismissed this "Alan Moore guy" as really overrated. Got the back issues years later and thought they were brilliant.

That picture reminds me of the weird headwear that guys used to get in the 90's, like Gambit. I never understood the deal with that.

I think the seeds of today's Image were there during that period, like when they took in Groo, Bone and Strangers in Paradise. Image was publishing Astro City at that time. I'd probably count The Maxx as well.

The case for the adjusted for inflation numbers is that neither of the X-Men movies without Jackman as Wolverine (in significant roles) have been big successes - both have underperformed. All of the full blown X-Men movies with him have been big successes a the box office. Period.

Finally saw it yesterday and imo was better than reviews said. It takes time to get going, but there were a lot of characters to juggle. I would like to have seen more of Magneto and Psylocke, but I like the setup for a sequel with the younger characters (and those comics uniforms!)

In terms of Superhero movies they have been moderate successes.

Unless of course we use your adjusted for inflation numbers to pump them up.
