One day I'll have to revisit this and Hateful Eight. IDK, didn't love either of them (Hateful Eight especially I didn't care for).

I still think QT was on something and really off his game on H8. Hollywood was a significant improvement, but still lacking to his first films. I hold no excitement anymore on stuff he does. That said, I’ll still watch his stuff, just won’t pay for it anymore.

I agree the H8 was a step down in quality from QT but Once Upon a Time in Hollywood is, IMO, the best film of 2019.
To me, it’s second only to Pulp Fiction.

what exactly about H8 did you find not QT and thus not appealing? Not criticizing, just curious. Had the stimulating dialogue, quirky characters and violence. I thought it was as splendid as all his others...

Oh, and I didn’t mind most of being in the cabin, but I think that’s what Reservoir Dogs was, set in a warehouse, and that story and characters are what made the movie great. Hateful 8 has pretty much the opposite. And I doubt people will be trying to mimic that one.

My issue with Hateful Eight is that it ran too long for what was, in effect, Reservoir Dogs in the old west, and twice as long.

IMO H8 is top 3 QT and his deepest most political film. A subversive anti-western like Corbucci’s The Great Silence. His best since Jackie Brown.
I loved OUATIH, but I would not put it above H8. Just my 2 pennies.

People who don’t understand 70 mm and criticize H8 are my number one movie pet peeve.

Btw, I love Hateful 8 right up until the moment Channing Tatum shows up and then it all goes downhill for me. Still good though.

I explained it several times in the original Hateful Eight thread here in Movie Talk. You can go look for it. Or I’ll look later when I have more time.

B5Erik said the 70 mm was wasted. I said
You are simply wrong. I could go on for pages, but I'm using my phone so I'll use one brief example to make my point.
When the guy comes back in from the cold, he wraps himself in a buffalo rug and collapses by the fire. You can see every curl on that buffalo, you can see every frozen crystal of his breath, you can see every rough edge of the stone fireplace. The 70 mm reveals so much detail. Its strengths don't just come through when photographing infinite landscapes, 70 mm also reveals intimate detail. I wanted to curl up by that fire it looked so sumptuous.
It also effects the technique of the filmmaker. You don't need to move the camera or cut as often or cut in to a close up because the image is so detailed. The 70 mm was amazing in this. Made you feel like you were in the room.

Then B5Erik insisted that 70mm is really only for big vast expanses of the outdoors.
And I said:
And I said:
I strongly disagree and you come off like you didn't read my post. 70 mm has many strengths in intimate spaces and I gave examples.
Let's talk Lawrence of Arabia. Everyone talks about Omar Sharif's entrance in that film. It IS an incredible example of the strengths of large format film. But there are other, much more intimate scenes that are also improved by 70 mm. Two that stand out are Lawrence's introduction in the basement. You can read the maps on the wall, you can see the stitches in the seams of his uniform, you can pear through the tiny windows and see the hoofs of the camels passing by outside. Another standout moment is when he meets with Alec Guinness's character in the tent. The wind blowing outside makes the tent sway, you can see every fiber in the Persian rugs they are sitting on, it's so detailed.

There are movies that we’re shot 70 mm that weren’t Ben Hur and Lawrence of Arabia and Spartacus. Take My Fair Lady. No vistas, no landscapes. It was done so you could see the sumptuous detail.

That is correct, and more recently would also apply to Paul Thomas Anderson's The Master which was in 70mm and at a 1.85:1 aspect ratio

Agree with Mabuse and I also disagree that H8's 70 mm was misused. There were plenty of outdoor vistas in the day, during the blizzard, and at night that accentuated what the fuck was going on, nevermind the interiors. Yeah, because QT and Robert Richardson are fucking idiots and don't know what they're doing with regards to shooting/directing 70mm. Right. ![Sarcasm](/images/smilies/sarcasm.gif)
Also, folks should watch the extended cut on Netflix, it's awesome.

Yeah, don't know if I would want to watch a 20 hour cut even spread out over a week. 4 hours or so on the other hand, yes.

Based on pure logistics, her saying there's a 20 hour cut is either hyperbole or she's referring to an assembly of all the raw footage.
On the DVD there's a "deleted scene" of Leo and Nicholas Hammond doing a six minute improv that wouldn't work as a scene in a narrative film as it's just the actors dicking around in character. Same with there being a full five minutes of Rick Dalton singing on Hullabaloou that in the final movie is a 30 second excerpt. Who knows how many things like that were shot for fun.
