It looks ok. As long as they don’t make theJoker Bruce’s half brother, I’ll check it out. It’s still not the version of my favorite comic villain I want to see.
What else bothers me is how DC bungles everything. This could very well be a one off, that goes nowhere. We’ll get five minutes of the true Joker at the end. Then nothing for a few years until the Joker pops back up by a different actor and no connection to this film.

So this version is one off and any future incarnation would be a different actor.

Todd Phillips is my biggest issue. He hasn't (IMHO) directed anything remotely good since the first Hangover. Many will debate that as well. But how he managed to fuck up both follow-ups is beyond me. After Hangover 2 he should never been allowed to write or direct again.

The responses here amuse me as I remember similar comments when The Killing Joke came out. A lot of people then also hated the "concrete" origin of the Joker back then even if there was the out that maybe he was remembering things wrong. This is just another version of the Joker. Except now, it's viewed thru the gritty and dirty prism of someone like Martin Scorsese. Of course, it's not Martin, but Todd Phillips directing and Martin is only producing. That gives me pause as well, but I do wonder if Scorsese is actually hands-off or doing his best Spielberg impression of"hands-off" ala Poltergeist (aka ghost directing)?
Anyway, the trailer is far better than I thought it would be and I'm intrigued by it. Before this popped, I had zero interest in the Joker (thank Leto!) but I may be on-board now. Jokers mixed with Mean Streets, Taxi Driver and King of Comedy? Hmm, interesting.

^ Yeah, as I've said before...if you approach DC Films with Multiverse sensibilities they can all live and exist as separate stories/events. This Joker film is a great example of this.

I was actually highly skeptical on this and figured it'd be a hard pass from me, but damn that trailer actually makes it seem like this could be good.

So is this the origin of the Heath Ledger Joker or that other shitty Joker with the grill?

Yeah, I vividly remember having to explain to people over and over in 2005 how Batman Begins was not a prequel to Batman 1989 and was a totally new take on the character. This was even after they had seen it. I had had one friend that was convinced that it was a prequel because of the Joker tease at the end, even while he was confused about it not being Joker who killed Batman's parents in the film.

Some friends at work were asking me if this takes place within the current DCEUniverse and I just told them that it was a standalone flick.

I'm not worried about that because if they care they'll ask and get the story.
