This may not have been the best Murray/Letterman interview. But Murray could have had a great career just as a Letterman guest. Murrays Letterman guest spots have been hilarious over the years. Along with Steve Martin.

Murray and Letterman are very good friends so it's my guess that he filled in for someone who cancelled at the last minute. Murray doesn't have a movie out until the Fall with his FDR flick. Murray made headlines over the weekend with his improvisation at a minor league baseball team (one that he's part owner) game, so maybe that's why.
Murray's line since the late 90s has been "I'll do it if there's a decent script."
Aykroyd is not a comedic writer. He can't write Bill's humor, he can give you technical jargon and detail plans out he doesn't do comedy. Aykroyd's initial script for the first Ghostbusters wasn't even a comedy. His treatment for Ghostbusters II had to be re-written by Ramis and Reitman, with improv from Murray. His "Hell on Earth" treatment for GB3 wasn't to Murray's liking, but we got most of it used in GB: The Video Game.
The most current incarnation of the script written by the two Office guys Murray said he didn't like (he threw it in the trash, supposedly). That's Sony's final take on it. I can't see them hiring more writers to flesh out another script entirely, on the off-whim chance that Bill Murray likes it and agrees to it. You have to keep in mind one entire third of the franchise is his. He has to sign off on anything for it to come to fruition, and with him not doing mainstream comedy since the 90s, does anyone think he's going to jump off of his arthouse bandwagon and agree to do a third film when he's had the opportunity to input and has said everything handed to him is garbage?
He did both Garfield movies which boggles my mind but he obviously still has a soft spot for the franchise with his cameo in Zombieland, but I just don't see it happening. The fact that I'm now in my mid-twenties and he the GB3 rumors started when I was still in elementary school is proof in the pudding.

Seriously though, I've reached the point where I would like to see a Ghostbusters 3 ... but I have no desire to see the original cast beyond supporting roles/cameos. They are too old and do not really fit anymore (no, that wasn't a fat joke). That said, I also don't want a remake.

Somewhere, somebody is still getting paid to move “Ghostbusters 3″ forward. WIVB 4 caught up with Dan Aykroyd this weekend while he was signing bottles of his Crystal Head Vodka at a promotional event in Amherst, NY.
Aykroyd revealed that the new Ghostbusters script has a ”new writing staff working on it now,” telling the station that “it’s got to be perfect. That’s the whole thing. There’s no point in doing it unless it’s perfect.” The words echo what Bill Murray told David Letterman last month after Murray was asked about his prospective “Ghostbusters 3″ involvement. Murray’s response? ”You just have to have a really good script, you know, it’s hard” he told Letterman, ”I think, you know, we’ll try again.”
Earlier this year Aykroyd counted Bill Murray out of the third film saying Murray would “not do the movie”, while Murray played coy and avoided any decision on the project in interviews with both British newspaper The Times and WGNtv.com.
The task of writing the third script was previously assigned to Lee Eisenberg and Gene Stupnitsky, a duo that gained notoriety after writing for “The Office” but then found their brand tarnished after their screenplays for “Year One” and “Bad Teacher” received negative reviews.

I'm a big Ghostbusters fan but how can you make another film sequel without Bill Murray playing Peter Venkman?
Not to mention I don't think people are going to want to see these characters return, greatly aged. Why does everything have to be this franchise that goes on forever?
Ghostbusters was a classic. Then we got the excellent Real Ghostbusters animated series which was 100x better than a film sequel. Then we got a film sequel that wasn't as good as the original, didn't follow the animated series, but was still fun and funny.
Don't get me wrong, I think there could have been a great trilogy from that first film but they waited too long for the 2nd, and played it a lot safer, no smoking, not as scary, etc.
I would rather like to see Dan Akryod try to make another film, similar in tone to Ghostbusters, but based around his other interests like aliens. You could argue that MIB already did that, but it's not like another angle couldn't be done. The Frightners was an excellent film and was a little bit like Ghostbusters too.

Yeah, it's discussed, and they showed a clip. I'll agree that it seems like he was filling in, but Moonrise Kingdom was the "reason" he was on the show.

According to Murray, he agreed to do the first Garfield movie without even reading the script because he thought it was written by one of the Coen brothers. He missed the fact one of the writers was Joel Cohen, not Joel Coen. But that excuse doesn't hold up for the second Garfield movie (unless he agreed to a possible trilogy from the start).

These guys are 60+ years old. I don't want to see them running around busting ghosts. That would make me sad. Like Caddyshack 2, sad. Maybe if they were the ghosts...

Here's an article about J. Michael Straczynski's take on GB3. Someone asked him about it at Comic Con.

I went to a panel with Etan Cohen a few days ago and he said he talked to Ivan Reitman beforehand to see if he could say ANYTHING about Ghostbusters 3... and was told he could not (surprise) but that they were very happy with the direction/story they were working with and that things looked to be coming together nicely. Here's hoping...

Etan Cohen writing this gave me an idea. Since Murray did Garfield because it was written by Joel Cohen and he thought it was the Cohen Bros. Joel Cohen, get them to write the script. A Cohen Brothers Ghostbusters could be awesome.
Or get Etan and Joel to write it together and hope that Murray gets confused again.

As for Murray, he added, "It's sad but we're passing it on to a new generation. Ghostbusters 3 can be a successful movie without Bill. My preference would be to have him involved but at this point he doesn't seem to be coming and we have to move on. It's time to make the third one."

No, Dan. The time to make a third one has longggggg since passed.
But since they're so intent on making one, I hope it sucks so bad that they never try again.

From the sounds of that it seems like Aykroyd is just intent on making another film to cash in on the popularity of Ghostbusters no matter what. Realistically the right time to have made a sequel would have been a long time ago and at this point it seems like a lame attempt especially if they aren't even going to have the original crew starring. I wouldn't have minded if there was a new set of Ghostbusters recruits and the original stars were even just there in supporting roles but if it's all just a new crew I don't really care. If Murray isn't involved I really have no interest in this film as he's a pretty big part of what made those movies what they are.

No fanboys ever wanted this, right?
All this is about is Dan Akroyd getting his name in the spot light and collecting a check.
