Yeah, it's hard to criticize ATC because you can get lumped in with the manbabies crying about girls being the stars when you simply have issues with the structure and the writing, not to mention it being a reboot instead of a continuation.

Ever since the Gamergate kerfuffle a few years back, the right-wing culture warriors have injected themselves into genre tv and film criticism and fan dissatisfaction. They go after things like Ghostbusters ATC and the Star Wars Sequel Trilogy -- bad to mediocre films -- and sow division among the fans. It worked spectacularly with Star Wars and Ghostbusters, less so with Captain Marvel where they tried their best to tar and feather Brie Larsen to little effect outside of their own youtube channels. They are, essentially predators going after the old, young, slow, and wounded members of the herd.
Ghostbusters ATC wouldn't have been any better if it had Jason Sudeikis, Kenan Thompson, Beck Bennett, and Mikey Day in it instead of Kristen Wiig, Kate McKinnon, Leslie Jones, and Melissa McCarthy. It would have been just another forgettable remake. But you stick four women in it, and to a bunch of shitheads on youtube and breitbart, it becomes woke bullshit and the fall of western civilization.

Kind-of surprised that this thread was not already bumped, as folks probably had a chance to check out the AV Clubs review of Afterlife over the weekend. First, as some folks in the AV comments section noted, it is a bit jarring to get a review of a what is supposed to be a major film event so far ahead of the films actual release date, next, the AV Club reviewer gave the film a C+, so he did not enjoy the film. Called it nostalgic in all the wrong ways, did not care for the humor in the film, and having read the entirety of the review he really was just very meh on the whole film.
I still plan to watch the movie, but the review caught my eye because it was so down on the film. Out of curiosity I checked out the review for the 2016 female GB and they gave that film a B, granted that film has nothing to do with Afterlife, but a C+ is a grade you give to something you are pretty darn unenthusiastic about.
ETA: Googled Ghostbusters Afterlife Reviews and it also looks like others are not impressed with the film. The blurb for The Guardian review is "a slimy, stinking corpse of a sequel." Ouch!
Interesting, as I really thought that the knives were not out for this film but maybe the trailer looks great but it masks a film that is just not a ton of fun to watch (iffy humor, pacing of the film, etc.).

Kaitlyn Booth at Bleedingcool gave it a 9/10.

Ghostbusters: Afterlife is the best possible way to approach reviving franchises. It has plenty of reverence for the previous movies, but it's the new stories told with a lot of heart and good characters that really cements it as an excellent movie.

I've never read anything by that reviewer, and don't plan on reading any reviews of the movie before I see it, but scrolling through his archives, I had to go back a few years before I found a film graded higher than a B+. Almost everything he has reviewed, he's given somewhere between a C- and a B. Not saying he's wrong, just that the C+ needs a little bit of context.

A choice note from the review:
https://www.avclub.com/ghostbusters-...xer-1847831687
A funny comedy about a group of nerds and slobs has been reshaped into a very different sort of retro-’80s sculpture: a neo-Spielbergian kid adventure, this one with with warm sitcom wisecracks and a bad running joke about bad jokes.
Also, the reviewer actually posted and replied in the comments, one notable comment being:
This might sound insulting but it is true: This movie absolutely will appeal to people who take the Saturday morning cartoon seriously.

My love of the franchise was absolutely secured and deepened by the cartoon. It was able to explore so many different ideas and the other films seemed to pale in comparison.

I've never watched Real Ghostbusters, but I know it's well-regarded.
Is it considered canon?

So based on the initial reviews, my prediction is this is either going to be really good or it’s going to really suck.

In cases like this, it seems like pre-conceived expectations are at play. People that go in wanting a fun movie have a good time and people that are expecting it to suck walk away hating the movie.

For example, people you say just want a fun movie could be so blinded by nostalgia that they can’t be objective (see early viewer reviews of The Phantom Menace). And people who “expect it to suck” might just be seeing through that nostalgia.
I mean, it can be a bad movie, you know.

The original however, is a stone cold classic that deserves every ounce of praise it gets.

The 90s weren't a good time for the old 80s franchises. The 80s horror franchises, F13, NOES, Halloween, Chainsaw, Hellraiser, et al, went to shit, and we didn't get any Ghostbusters or Indiana Jones films while the casts were still young.

GB3 was in developmental hell for so long that I’m glad it never made past pre production. It would have been another Beverly Hills Cop 3 where it is just written rewritten, and cranked out just for the sake of making a Ghostbusters film. And while that’s the same thing that happened with 2, 2 still had a lot of good things about it. By the time it got to the end of the 90s/early 2000’s I feel like the fire to make a great GB movie had burnt out for everyone involved. That’s why I was happy to hear Jason had a fresh idea for it and that Ivan was going to pass the torch. I’m not saying it’s guaranteed to be a masterpiece, but all things considered I think this is the best case scenario .

As a franchise… maybe. I mean it’s barely been a franchise until now. A movie with a sequel and a 30 years later remake is hardly a franchise. It’s like calling the dumb and dumber films a trilogy. 2016 is a pile of shit and 2 is very flawed but still very enjoyable.

Cool, so that mineshaft has to be
My kids are hoping for the vaccine in time to see this in the theater. I think we'll be cutting it close, we'll see. Maybe if the second-run theaters didn't all go out of business around here.

Re: Ghostbusters: Afterlife (2021, D: Jason Reitman)
I posted this after the last trailer dropped:
The first trailer had a shot of an abandoned mine with a sign saying "Shandor Mining Company". Ivo Shandor was the architect of the building in the original film. In this new trailer there's a shot of the kids going down the vertical mine shaft and ending up in some sort of temple-like room.
I think Ivo Shandor, or maybe a relative, built another temple to bring forth Gozer and the apocalypse, but this time into a mountain instead of as a building. Egon somehow tracked it down (investigated Shandor's life?), and moved out to where it was to contain it in some way. Now that Egon's gone, his containment methods are breaking down.
