Re: COVID-19 Virus -- Movie related news
Was poking around and saw this. It is not in the app! It is a 30-day ONE TIME pause that is “irreversible”.
I’m not hitting it yet. A total shutdown is coming. Just sucks that I’m afraid I’ll lose about $50 worth of rewards.

So in 12 weeks, including what’s already been pulled, that would be 7 films by Disney under their multiple banners. It would back just in time for Soul if they’re lucky or don’t swap that with something they already pulled. I think they will starting releasing “FOX” movies via the On Demand route first.

Regarding the $20 rentals... My initial reaction was that it was absurd, but my wife insists that we should rent Trolls this way when it's out, as my daughter will want to see it and all the cinemas are closed indefinitely anyway.
Regarding cinemas... Man... I just have a terrible feeling about all this. I don't think many one-off art-houses will survive, and I think even the chains (big and small) are in a position to completely fail and not come back. At least... they won't come back in the way we know them to be today. Maybe some places continue to fill their own niche, or maybe their owners decide to end it for good and retire on what they've got.Maybe this is the turning point to end major theatrical distribution in favor of pure home digital distribution of top tier titles... or a point of no return for anything not acquired by Disney or Netflix.

I think the best approach for Disney would be to open up an additional pay wall within Disney+ and Hulu and offer a discounted rental rate. They can bulk up subscriber numbers and then charge a rental fee for the new releases. So anyone who is a subscriber is paying the subscription fee ($5.99, or whatever the rates are based on level with Hulu) and then charge a discounted rental rate $9.99 - $12.99.
They could charge the regular $19.99 or more rental fee to all those via the regular On Demand route.

$20 is a bargain if you're in NYC or LA, but for most of us it's a premium. I don't have a problem with it, but hope they handle it the way rentals of streaming movies currently are...full price the first two or three weeks, then a discount the longer it has been out.

AMC closing is the ballgame. The absolute best case is if they open in 8-9 wks in time for Memorial wknd, which Black Widow could move to... do a big promotional push to get the crowds out. More likely.. BW should take an early August spot that MCU's used before with great success. I'm not convinced June/July releases need to move yet... they have some time at least to see how things play out.

I won't get to see Braveheart on the big screen and I have very little faith it'll be rescheduled.

Oh, definitely, I think it'll happen.
It's wild.

The theater industry was already facing a tough 2020 before Covid-19 hit, noted analyst Alan Gould of Loop Capital. AMC Entertainment’s recently sinking stock reflected fears that came to a head this weekend. The box office plunged, big cities like New York and Los Angeles ordered theaters closed. The chain said Monday that for theaters still open it would be adopting CDC recommendations to limit auditoriums to 50 people.
AMC ended 2019 with $265 million of unrestricted cash and $332 million of undrawn credit, Gould said – so about $600 million in cash. But he’s projecting a negative $285 million of free cash flow in the first half and said a sustained virus “could lead to some liquidity issues.”

Black Widow postponed: https://variety.com/2020/film/box-of...us-1203532996/
The studio also pulled “The Personal History of David Copperfield,” from its Searchlight banner, and “The Woman in the Window,” a 20th Century title, as well.

Bloody Disgusting was just informed that the studio is moving Antebellum (April 24th), Spiral: From the Book of Saw (May 15) and Run (May 8) from their release schedule.
We’re told that these films will remain undated for the time being and Lionsgate will announce the next steps, dates, and strategies for bringing these films to the public once there is more clarity on when theaters will safely and fully resume operations.

Any word on Saint Maud? I could see A24 going straight to VOD with that one... But the trailer was getting played regularly at my local Alamo right before all this.

I was thinking the same thing about that one and think that it should. But I had read something that A24 is committed to theatrical. It’s hard to get the indies in theatres these days and they have a following and do pretty well. They’re going to try and relaunch First Cow later in the year too. We’ll see what happens. Maybe it was just in the case of that film.

This looks like it will seriously affect the way we see movies from here on out. I don't think it will kill movie theaters overall but you might see some close down locations and the smaller ones going out of business completely. It will also be an experimental time for studios to find out how audiences will take to VOD rentals day and date with theatrical releases. This might finally become the norm after this.
Anyone else think that Peter Rabbit would be a great candidate for release on VOD? Timing of that one seems pretty crucial.
