I really want to see Black Widow but I don’t need to go back to theaters until it’s safe to do so. 25% capacity and everyone in masks is not safe my book. And no movie is worth that risk.

Up here nobody's going to the movies, so they're lucky to get 1% capacity.

They did some classics showings to get folks back in and I went to see Jaws with two other people in the theater. It was nice to see my favorite movie on the big screen again.
Also saw Tenet, so that worked in our case.
Will go see the TCM/Fathom showings of Close Encounters of the 3rd Kind and maybe Apollo 13.
Looking forward to WW84, Bond25, and Dune.

Of course I'm splurging on concessions each time just to try to keep the place open.

I agree with this. I don't think there is anything on the release schedule from now until December that would get me back in. It would have to be something that I'm SUPER hyped for. I would say, just going on what I remember comes out next year, The Batman would get me in a seat opening night. And that's really it.

I am, however, checking out the original Halloween at a drive-in on Halloween though, so pretty psyched about that,.

Honestly Flash is about the only thing I can think of, but I’m not sure when it’s scheduled for currently.

Even after the outbreak slows down, can't see the traditional cinemas making a complete recovery. The MCU and superhero genre blew its load with Endgame. Now with Chadwick 's death and other major actors aging out of their roles, the current next phase in Disney's MCU is just second banana heaven filler.

​​​​​​I wonder if the real next phase of the MCU (X-Men/Fantastic Four) is in episodic streaming on Disney+? So!solar to what HBOMAX is doing right now with the Snyder cut of Justice League.

Same here.

I'm also going a few times a week. That would increase if they did some IMAX re-releases.

Pre-pandemic, I use to hit the theater a few times per year. Now, I'm absolutely loving the lack of complete assholes in the theater (almost like pre facebook/cellphone days).

Last time I've been to the theater was Spider-Man: Far From Home, so not really missing the theater experience. However, the one movie I would go back for is The Batman.

I discovered that I'm sitting on 5 movie credits from my Cinemark movie club. Thought about going to see Tenant this weekend. The theater would probably be nearly empty. Yet I still can't do it. The experts list it as a high risk activity.. OTOH, I keep hearing stories of people dying from covid who took every precaution. I wonder if most people are walking around already infected and their immune systems beat the virus. Seems like it's almost impossible to avoid getting the virus unless you are a hermit out in the woods. So if I'm going to get it anyways, might as well go out and enjoy life. Least, that's how I'm trying to talk myself into going to the movies. lol

I'm not in any hurry. Plenty of unwatched stuff in my collection. I will admit that I was tempted when I happened to drive past the local theater yesterday.

I'm in a small town. We have two movie theaters here - a new release and a discount, both Cinemark. Anyway, only the new release one is currently open. Especially on the weekends, I'm used to seeing that theater's parking lot absolutely filled pretty much all day and all night. It was nearly empty yesterday. It was jarring to see. For a moment, I thought if it's that empty, maybe I'll end up going after all, but I don't think it's worth it right now.

Honestly, this is a weird question to me. I understand those with my viewpoint, which is I love movies, but theaters are a high risk environment and we’re deep in a pandemic, so there’s no movie I’d go to the theater for in the current environment.

I accept that plenty of people think this whole thing is an overblown hoax. Or maybe some just think somehow theaters are a safe environment despite pretty much universal agreement from the experts that they’re not. I would expect those people to go to any movie they’d regularly go see.

This thread assumes there’s a group that realizes it’s a bad decision to go to the theater, but just wouldn’t be able to help themselves from going for a specific movie. I don’t get that mindset at all.

I went to the movies last night at my local theater and I was the only person in the theater. The few times I have been before there were two or three other people in the theater with me. I want to go and I feel safe in doing so as they desperately need the business and I want to see the industry survive.

Two or three people attending a movie costing them more than it would if they just closed. We should focus on getting this under control and then bringing businesses back rather than forcing everyone to limp along with half and quarter-measures in place for months on end.

How exactly do you bring back thousands of businesses from the dead, once they've shut their doors permanently? A Go Fund Me? Salvation Army?

Going to see Infidel this afternoon. It will be my 4th film since going back a few weeks ago. I'm not naive. I know the theaters are struggling right now since they reopened due to severe lack of new movies, big cities still closed and many who simply don't feel comfortable being around other people in public. But, it's something I love to do and it's an industry I don't want to die and will do my best to support. I'll continue to do my best to keep myself safe and healthy. I'm also putting some level of trust in the theater I go to. Yes I know some of you and others simply don't trust theaters and that's your choice.

Normally Infidel wouldn't be a movie that screams going to the theater to see since it's a smaller movie, but at least it has a star I know and like.

And being that this is a forum that is primarily focused on physical media and streaming media bargains, I know that some of you prefer being at home when consuming entertainment and the theater experience is simply not important to you.

Only thing that might do it is Dune. Even then, probably not.

I hope Warner learned their lesson with Tenet and its theater only BS. I was happy to pay $20 for Bill and Ted at home. I'd pay $100 for Dune. I wouldn't have gone to Tenet if it was free.

I plan to see that one later this week. It sort of screamed VOD at me when I saw the trailer, but I loved Jesus in Frequency and Person of Interest.

The best way to make money is to sell consumers the same product more than once. Theater and home video and different experiences. You can sell a movie once, then three months later sell it again. (And renting used to be in between those two.)

Many consumers will see a movie for the first time at home, and then have no desire to see it again in the near future. There might be a few outlier studios that want to skip theaters, but there's no fucking way the studios overall would ever want to get rid of their first, and in some cases their biggest revenue stream.

...which is currently a fraction of what it was and will be for the foreseeable future.

They need to change their methods right now. Restaurants went curbside. Boutiques offered online shopping. Studios need to start showing their movies at home. They can reevaluate it later.
