A plastic toy in his younger years? I’m not following but I have faith in Pixar. We’ll see how it plays out.

It sounds like maybe Lightyear was a real person they turned into an action figure?

Edit: yup -
Lightyear will follow how the test pilot became the space hero that spawned the Buzz Lightyear action figure made famous in Pixar’s Toy Story movies. Angus MacLane, the co-director of Finding Dory, will be taking the reins on Lightyear.“

I thought they were making a movie about Buzz Lightyear of Star Command.

I guess Tim Allen has pissed off the wrong people to be included in this project.

I don’t think that has anything to do with it.

I bet his voice will still be in it.

So is this set in the same reality as Toy Story? Guess it is not too much of a stretch, since the toys of that world are sentient beings.

That's my understanding - it's based on a human that lived in the Toy Story universe that was an astronaut of sorts, that inspired the toy that is Buzz Lightyear. Imagine if Woody the toy was inspired by Gene Autry or something like that.

Wasn't he already based on Buzz Aldrin? At least, I imagine that's where they got the name from.

yeah, i don't understand why they wouldn't go with his voice. i mean it's his voice, he made it iconic. looks and age not even a factor and he certainly doesn't sound old, but whatever...

Because the movie isn't about Buzz Lightyear the toy. It's about the real astronaut, within fake Pixar world, that was the inspiration for the creation of the action figure.

I think $$ also plays a factor, Allen likely costs a ton. This allows them to change things up with a still popular actor (esp in a role like this) while saving some $$, and I bet we still get a Tim Allen cameo of some kind.

You think that Tim Allen commands a higher salary than Chris Evans? No way.
It's not like this is years and years after the last sequel. TS4 was last year. Now there's an issue with Allen? Come on... That is not what is going on.

Not sure about this. Kind of a weird idea having it be a Toy Story spin-off, but yet based on the real life (in the film’s universe at least) person who inspired the toy.

So much for Pixar not mining old franchise material. What next? We get a Finding Sigourney movie about how she became the voice of the Monterey Marine Life Institute?

Well said. Not sure why everyone is so hung up on this. Buzz the toy sounds like Allen. Buzz the real Astronaut sounds like Evans.

To continue the Woody comparisons, Woody the toy in real life is voiced by Jim Hanks which is obviously different than Woody the character voiced by Tom Hanks.

But maybe not for this role. If this character really were Buzz Lightyear, Allen would probably get more than Evans. Just as no other actor would be paid as much as Evans to portray Captain America.

If they offered this to Allen, he would take it without question. If for some reason, he wanted 20 or 30 million, Disney would pay it, because they know their returns on Pixar movies.

This is likely being done so they have a younger voice actor who can play (a version) of one of their most popular characters for a long time to come.

Re: Disney/Pixar's Lightyear (2022) V: Chris Evans

Check out a brand-new trailer for Disney and Pixar’s “Lightyear,” an original feature film releasing June 17, 2022. The sci-fi action-adventure presents the definitive origin story of Buzz Lightyear—the hero who inspired the toy—introducing the legendary Space Ranger who would win generations of fans.

Chris Evans lends his voice to Buzz. Annie Award-winning director and veteran Pixar animator Angus MacLane helms “Lightyear.” Galyn Susman produces.

Slingshotting around the sun for hyperspace, some old school sci-fi stuff I guess.

Still not sure how this will land, part of Buzz's appeal in Toy Story was his fish out of water schtick and his earnestness.

That actually got me kind of jazzed. I was expected something closer to the animated series, but looks like it's going a little more serious and exploratory.
