Re: Poor Things (2023, D: Lanthimos) S: Stone, Ruffalo, Dafoe

I went to see this on discount Tuesday, so I only wasted $6, but I did not like it. Maybe I'm not on Yorgos' wavelength. I certainly thought it was unique and creative and a singular artistic statement, but I was not entertained at all.

I don't understand how a film like this gets categorized as a comedy or even a black comedy. I think people just look at a movie that is weird and difficult to understand, and then just decide it must be a "black comedy." Being super weird does not equate to black comedy.

I will say this. IDK what Lily Gladstone is doing Flower Moon (haven't seen it) that could be a better acting performance than Stone.

That is a short as heck PPV run but I am not curious to see the movie. Love Stone, Ruffalo and Dafoe and I had not heard about this movie yet. Glad I kept Hulu without commercials.

Hulu has leaned hard into becoming more of an arthouse platform, thanks in large part to Searchlight, and I like that.

I thought this was way too long at 2 hours, 16 minutes.

I didn’t like it as much as Yorgos previous films, but Emma Stone is so fucking fantastic in this that it doesn’t matter.

Dafoe is excellent here too.

I'll watch it on Hulu. I was never really that enticed to see it in the theater. I heard this movie is definitely not for everyone.

It may not be for everyone, and I definitely didn't like it as much as a lot of critics/etc., but my guy, you go to the movies so much. You see everything (sometimes twice) and are constantly advocating for theaters. You couldn't make time for one of the most acclaimed movies of the year? Again, I didn't love it, but it's a spectacular production and definitely rewards a big screen viewing.

(By the way, not trying to pick on you. Just genuinely interested in your thinking.)

Yeah I try to see most big movies and a few smaller ones. Hell, I recently watched Anyone But You twice in the theater. But I’m not a big fan of eclectic arthouse type movies. Honestly I find most of them boring and this looked like one of those. I could be way off base in my assumption.

I didn’t see a movie like Tar last year because the premise just didn’t interest me and I know it’s highly acclaimed.

You saw Barbie, right? Poor Things is kind of like steampunk Barbie with a lot more sex. It's a comedy. You should see it.

And everytime you see a Sydney Sweeney movie before seeing Tar, just know that a little part of my soul dies. Do you not want me to have a soul?

Based on your history on here, I think you will be bored with this. I love arthouse stuff and it was a bit dull for me.

But if you’ve ever wanted to see Emma Stone naked and having sex in many lol different 🍎 ways, that takes up about half the film. 😉

Test it out. If you think this actually funny, not an interesting concept that makes you think about how odd it is, but actually ha-ha funny, this movie is for you.

Re: Poor Things (2023, D: Lanthimos) S: Stone, Ruffalo, Dafoe

The movie is too long. I enjoyed the first half or so but it gets very repetitive. Sad to say Stone getting railed in multiple positions holds as much excitement as her expression during many of the scenes. For a movie about liberation and independence the movie fails to really capture any spirit of that by its conclusion instead feeling stylish but detached like a framed butterfly collection.

Fair point, although that's the Lanthimos style. I also think that was somewhat by design: as she (rapidly) matures, the world becomes less exciting, there's repetition, her dialogue becomes more normal, etc.

I liked it, but agree it could have been shorter. The parts on the boat and in Paris definitely could have been trimmed,

Stone and Dafoe were great, but Ruffalo could have taken it down a notch.

This really clicked with me.

I unfortunately have the version with ads but in this case they actually kind of added to the experience of watching the movie. Things like Jerrod Carmichael telling Emma Stone he'd show her how the world works followed by a hard cut to a laundry detergent ad gave me as big of a laugh as anything in the movie and I laughed quite a bit.

Will be picking this up on bluray or 4k but may watch it with ads once more before I do.

.
lol That reminds me of the Chilean TV version of STAR WARS with the ads edited into the movie that was making the round on twitter last week.

I thought Ruffalo was perfect, as were Stone and Dafoe. This is a weird, over the top, surreal morality play and it just works.
