The non-sexual part of the F-bomb rule is the weirdest thing. "Fuck off"? PG-13. "Let's fuck"? R.
I wonder what "Go fuck yourself" would earn.

Argo fuck yourself was rated R. Can't think of many other reasons I would have gotten that rating.

70 mm for me. The local theater is having a number of 70 mm screenings leading up to it. 2001 is playing tonight.

I definitely want to see this, but I won't go to an IMAX theater again. The AMC IMAX rooms in our nearest theater have the worst seats. Last movie I saw in IMAX there was Dune and I won't be seeing 2une in IMAX, that I can tell you!

J. Robert Oppenheimer was notorious for breaking out the helicopter dick at inopportune moments.
"I am become death, destroyer of worlds!"
Oppenheimer drops pants and swings his penis around in a circle while his research team stares at him with horrified expressions on their faces.

Snippets of language that go "beyond polite conversation" are permitted in G-rated films, but no stronger words are present. Profanity may be present in PG rated films, and use of one of the harsher "sexually-derived words" as an expletive will initially incur at least a PG-13 rating. More than one occurrence will usually incur an R rating as will the usage of such an expletive in a sexual context.[3] Known as the "automatic language rule", the rule has been applied differently depending on the subject matter of the film. For example, All the President's Men (1976) received a general rating on appeal, despite multiple instances of strong language, likely because of its historic subject matter. The automatic language rule is arguably the rule that can most often be successfully appealed.[48] The ratings board may award a PG-13 rating passed by a two-thirds majority if they believe the language is justified by the context or by the manner in which the words are used.[3]
It is sometimes claimed that films rated PG-13 are only able to use the expletive fuck once to avoid an R rating for language.[49] There are several exceptional cases in which PG-13-rated films contain multiple occurrences of the word fuck: Adventures in Babysitting, where the word is used twice in the same scene;[50] Antwone Fisher which has three uses;[51] The Hip Hop Project, which has seventeen uses;[52] and Gunner Palace, a documentary of soldiers in the Second Gulf War, which has 42 uses of the word with two used sexually.[53] Both Bully, a 2011 documentary about bullying, and Philomena—which has two instances of the word—released in 2013, were originally given R ratings on grounds of the language but the ratings were dropped to PG-13 after successful appeals.[54][55]The King's Speech, however, was given an R rating for one scene using the word fuck several times in a speech therapy context; the MPAA refused to recertify the film on appeal, despite the British Board of Film Classification reducing the British rating from a 15 rating to a 12A on the grounds that the uses of the expletive were not directed at anyone.[56]
This was satirized in the 2005 film Be Cool, in which the movie producer Chili Palmer (John Travolta) says: "Do you know that unless you're willing to use the R rating, you can only say the 'F' word once? You know what I say? Fuck that. I'm done."[57] Often film producers will use the word for a scene of gravitas or humor and then blur out any further instances with sound effects.[57]
Some forms of media are cut post-release so as to obtain a PG-13 rating for home media release or to feature on an Internet streaming service that will not carry films rated higher than PG-13. In 2020, a recording of Hamilton was released on Disney+ after cuts by Lin-Manuel Miranda to remove two of the three instances of fuck in the musical to qualify it as PG-13 under MPAA guidelines.[58]
A study of popular American teen-oriented films rated PG and PG-13 from 1980 to 2006 found that in those films, teenaged characters use more and stronger profanity than the adult characters in the same movies.[59] However, the study found that the overall amount of such language had declined somewhat since the 1980s.[59]

It's never been dumber than in Planes, Trains and Automobiles where it has an R rating for one long string of angry humorous F-bombs in a hilarious single scene. I always thought that was so ridiculous.

I assumed everyone on this forum was old enough to even watch XXX movies, nevermind something that's just rated R.

I'm not sure this will be a blockbuster. But, I'm sure it will do much better than Tenet. Tenet was for all intents and purposes a domestic bomb, but came out when COVID was still a problem and most of Nolan's fans weren't ready to go back to sitting in a theater yet. Also, the story was really convoluted and the audio mix was awful. I'll be honest, I have had no urge to re-visit it since I saw it in late 2020.
I think that Tenet would have done well for one weekend then dropped off significantly after if it came out with everything being fine in 2020. It's just not a movie with main stream appeal.
I see Oppenheimer being able to do well with an R rating by maintaining itself over a few weeks. The only real problem with its IMAX run is that the new Mission:Impossible comes out on its heels and the theaters will definitely be giving all of their premium screens to that one. Tom Cruise is the guy who saved the theater industry....

What's funny is that Tom Cruse had that video in 2020 about him going to the theater to see Tenet to support theatrical releases, and now his movie is going to compete for IMAX screens with Oppenheimer.

I think the studio is sticking with a July release instead of a more appropriate November/December release because they have to make as much money back as possible.
This is gonna be a gigantic money loser if it really cost around $200 million.

$200m? I haven't heard anything about this going over budget, much less by $100m+.

I would say the should cut that marketing by 50% but if they want to get adults to the theater, they need to spend as much as they can get and pray it gets great reviews across the board.

I also haven't checked recently since I already have my tickets for Oppenheimer in DC, but they initially only released tickets on premium screens first. Non-premium format screen showings were not available. The irony was that most of those premium screens had not sold out yet.

I'm seeing this in IMAX since it was shot with IMAX cameras. I just noticed that AMC just started promoting on their Twitter that Dolby Cinema showings are also available. When I booked my ticket weeks ago, Dolby wasn't available yet.
It's 3 hours and the IMAX seats at my AMC aren't recliners, so this might be a little uncomfortable.

I got my DC seats on the first day of pre-orders. The IMAX auditorium at my theater is being remodeled.

At my theater, Openheimer is IMAX, Barbie gets Dolby.
I went with 70mm film projection instead. Figured this would be a cool experience. Haven't seen a 70 mm projection since The Hateful 8 Roadshow Cut.

Only 19 theaters in the country are capable of the 70mm IMAX projection.
The IMAX print is more than 11 miles long and weighs over 600 pounds.
(Indianapolis is one of those 19 … hmm …)
