Re: 20 Years of Pearl Jam

Heard some of the PJ 20 album

Disc 1 is concert stuff and pretty good.

Disc 2 is terrible so far. The rarities are garbage and the instrumentals need to go.

Not even close to a purchase for me.

Re: 20 Years of Pearl Jam

Saw PJ 3 times in the past week - they were awesome. The first night in Toronto, Neil Young joined them onstage for "Rocking in the Free World". All told, they played over 60 different songs across the 3 nights - which is why I love these guys, never play the same show twice. Can't wait for the movie next week.

Good info, think I'll pass on this unless it can be had for ten bucks or so. I'd really prefer to just see the film anyway.

The stuff on Disc 2 that is rare or unheard has lousy sound quality for a decent amount of it.

I guess I just expected this to be a really special set or something. IMO, it's far from that.

Granted, they put all that stuff on Lost Dogs, so apparently there wasn't much left.

I'll be anxiously awaiting for the release of the recent Alpine Valley 20th Anniv. shows from Wisconsin. Chris Cornell came out and sang 4 Temple of the Dog songs with PJ.

Re: 20 Years of Pearl Jam

Pearl Jam Twenty hits DVD and Blu-ray on October 25th in case anyone is interested. There will be two versions available, the movie on a single disc for $14.99 or a three disc deluxe version for $59.99. The Blu-ray version only appears to be available as the three disc deluxe version and is $69.99. The three disc versions are also exclusive to the Ten Club.

The deluxe includes (from Blu-ray description on pearljam.com)
THREE DVD SET FEATURING OVER FOUR HOURS OF EXTRAS.
DISC ONE FULL-LENGTH VERSION OF "PEARL JAM TWENTY" ALONG WITH BONUS FOOTAGE
DISC TWO "THE KIDS ARE TWENTY" VERSION OF THE FILM AND BONUS FOOTAGE
DISC THREE- "THE FANS ARE ALRIGHT" OVER 80 MINUTES OF EXTRAS FOCUSING ON THE FANS AND THEIR RELATIONSHIP WITH THE BAND

I'm going to spring for the Blu-ray version myself.

Re: 20 Years of Pearl Jam

I'm a big PJ fan but $75 for a 3 disc Blu Ray is ridiculous. I guess I will just be getting the single disc DVD since it appears there will not be a one disc blu-ray of just the film itself.

Re: 20 Years of Pearl Jam

$75? They're fucking high. Ironic given that they have an entire disc devoted to the fans relationship with the band. Based on that price, that relationship entails being bent over a pool table.

And they couldn't even spot the fans some free shipping?

Re: 20 Years of Pearl Jam

For most other bands I'd tend to agree but Pearl Jam is one of my favorites. Plus the fact that it's through the Ten Club and not being widely released I wouldn't be surprised if it goes out of print soon.

So does that mean you don't think that this set is a big rip off?

Re: 20 Years of Pearl Jam

It's overpriced yeah, but what do I say I want it. If I don't buy it and it ends up out of print I'll be even more pissed when I can only find it for an even more outrageous price on eBay. Pearl Jam flippers are some of the worst when it comes to jacking up prices. Plus to be honest the price isn't totally unexpected. Whenever you buy directly from a band's website the merchandise tends to be more expensive.

Re: 20 Years of Pearl Jam

Yeah, typically a $10 CD is $20-$25 on a band's web site. We're talking about a $25 DVD/Blu going for nearly $80. It's a big jump.

Oh well.

Re: 20 Years of Pearl Jam

Last-minute heads-up on the PJ20 CD : At Target it's on sale for $15.98, but when you buy it with Backspacer ($11.98), you get $12 back. Of course, anyone who might be interested in PJ20 probably already has Backspacer. But here's the thing : On your receipt, it breaks down the value of the return so that if you buy the two together ($16 + tax total) and then return Backspacer, you'd "only" get $6 + tax back, but of course that means you bought PJ20 for $9.98, after the Backspacer CD is returned. Works out to be a good enough deal for me to take advantage of. Deal is only valid through today (for puchase, you can return Backspacer up to 90 days later with receipt).

Re: 20 Years of Pearl Jam

For those that don't visit the movie forum, it's airing on PBS. I'd say it's worth a look before you buy. I found it to be average at best.

Re: 20 Years of Pearl Jam

I'm probably biased since I'd call them one of my favorite bands but I disagree personally about the documentary being only average. I found it to be an interesting look at the band's history with a lot of great archival footage. It did focus a bit more on the early years of the band which might be the only real weakness of the film if you ask me. I was fine with that though because it was interesting to hear them talk about how they all came together and seeing them audition early shows and gradually get better and better. I'm wondering if the deluxe DVD/Blu-ray will have a lot of extra footage as I know there's two cuts of the film on it. Maybe that will cover some years that weren't covered much.

They had the same sort of deal with the Foo Fighters - Back And Forth on Blu Ray, too.

My local indie store told me the Blu Ray was getting released on 11/1. Not sure if this is the 3 disc version (since I didn't know about that prior) or just a single one. This was last weekend, so I'm going to have to re-check with them to see what they have to say about it now.

I also see that Amazon has a single disc Blu Ray version listed as coming out 1/3/2012. However, the picture is for an import version, so still a bit confusing.

I wouldn't mind getting everything that's on the 3 disc, but hell if I'm going to pay what they're asking for it. So, it seems like I may just opt for just the single disc.

You don't have to worry yourself over that, as the 3 disc, which was a limited edition Ten Club exclusive, is sold out. I'm not sure if they are going to offer more.

Doubtful that it'll come back out. Glad I went with my instinct to just fork out the price they were asking when it initially came out as I figured that would happen. Those prices are absolutely insane and it's even crazier that a couple of them have bids. I'm a fan but honestly no chance I'd pay $300 for a three disc Blu-ray set.

I'm looking for a copy of the soundtrack on vinyl but no way am I paying the outrageous prices being offered.
