Agree. "Baby" is interesting for a listen, but with most of these B-sides available long ago I don't see the point in most of these CDs. The remixes weren't all that hot in the 90's and today they sound even clunkier. I love this U2 album, but I'm content to sit on the single disc first issue (as well as Zooropa).

Achtung Baby is my favorite U2 album, but I'm not willing to pay those prices for it. If it included a pro shot concert from Zoo TV that they never released before I may of changed my mind. I already have the Sydney concert DVD. I wish I could see more of the Zoo TV shows on DVD/Bluray, there are many clips on youtube. The new deluxe edition of Joshua Tree had a never before released concert DVD in it, why didn't they do that for this reissue?

They screwed up on the ZOO TV Sydney disc, labeled NTSC, but PAL format...I already have it so not a big deal, but they may have to issue replacements.

The real thing that's killed U2 for me in the 21st century is their music. No Line On The Horizon was the first album they made this century that I didn't hate, and even then it's still just good, not great. Beautiful Day is the only track I can still stand to listen to on ATYCLB, and Atomic Bomb is the worst album they've ever recorded.
REM had the good sense to disband, even if it was a few years later than they should have. Maybe U2 should consider it, or at least lie dormant until they have something really worth listening to.

You don't remember the first "money grab" they did back in 2004 with the 'How To Dismantle An Atomic Bomb' release? There were a couple different overpriced versions; a book/DVD release (that I bought) and soon after regretted doing so... that book was a steaming pile of shit. Then all the ensuing catalog re-issue releases, those in every incarnation weren't overpriced?
Then the mother of all grand scale money grabs came with the No Line On The Horizon album (IMHO, it's their most unlistenable release ever). Of which they had stacks of $100 versions for sale at Best Buy.
U2 wrap themselves in a vail of humanitarian bullshit but in actuality they are a corporation, a money hungry corporation. Sure, there might be four guys in the band but they are a mega money making machine. They have a staff of over 100 people in Ireland alone that work for them. This isn't counting all the people worldwide that U2 employ, lawyers, PR, management, etc.
U2 are a smart group, business wise. While we're busy purchasing overpriced concert tickets and overpriced merchandise, and overpriced album releases we get a nice distraction of Bono hugging poor people across the globe. That distraction alone makes everyone feel better about padding U2's pocket book.

Quite frankly, I enjoy some of U2's older work, but I think they are massively overrated.
Good band. But I've never understood what all the fuss is about....at least as far as the quality of their music.
I think it's because they have been around so long.
No way I am paying for all this bullshit.

I don't see this bitching in the Beach Boys Smile Thread and that box set contains 5 CD's, and is $50 more. $129 for 6 CD's and 4 DVD's and a beautiful hard back book is much easier to swallow than their last two albums "Special Editions". Around $35 for HTDAAB (included a short dvd) and $90! for NLOTH (Included a 1 hr dvd).

U2 could have made a great, foolproof Achtung box, but it's kind of impressive how badly they botched this.

Actually think it's because the Smile thread is 1 1/2 pages long and this is 6. There's plenty of complaining about the Smile set on other boards. Both sets are overpriced and I'm not sure Beach Boys fans are as fervant as U2 fans in 2011. I don't know anyone who's buying either. I bought the Smile 2 disk set and I ordered both this and the Quadrophenia 2 disk sets. I have no idea why anyone would spend upwards of $150 on one of these megasets. They just don't seem worth it.

That's because the other set is concentrated on one album, and doesn't awkwardly shoehorn in another, completely different record (seriously, it's being treated like an afterthought) because they have slight similarities (and also kills the chance of said record getting its own deluxe set). And the Smile set actually has a ton of exclusive material, as opposed to this set, the majority of which has been available before.

I can see why they included Zooropa, but would have preferred a double CD release of that on it's own, like Boy/October/War got.

Also The Beach Boys haven't been doing this for every album in their catalog, either. And I still didn't buy the big set for that, but the outtakes I heard were more interesting than 99% of the bonus tracks on Achtung Baby.

Where are you getting 3 DVDs of new content? The videos have already been released and From the Sky Down premiered on Showtime last week and will be getting its own release shortly. And the 2 CDs is a bit of a cheat, since 1 disc could probably fit the "baby" versions and outtakes, which aren't "true" outtakes anyways (taking old backing tracks and pasting on new instrumentation/vocals doesn't count in my book--just give me the raw versions, chief).
How hard would this be?
CD 1 - Achtung Baby
CD 2 - Outtakes/B-sides/remixes (part 1)
CD 3 - Remixes (part 2)
DVD - A proper documentary about making the album/Zoo TV (not that shitty thing from Guggenheim) + video odds & sods + music videos

Oh yeah, and The Beach Boys didn't re-record vocals for the Smile set either.
It's really like U2 did everything they could to steer people away from the big box set. And why is Zooropa being treated as a bonus disc? Shameful.

looks like the iTunes release is labeled as "Mastered For iTunes." I am seeing that more often. So I guess it's louder or something?
Did we ever determine if Zooropa was a remaster?

Re: U2 - Achtung Baby Reissue - Oct. 31
I just read a review on Amazon -
Years ago I read an article that said nobody really knew how to properly master a CD until 1993. Don't know if that's true or what, but Zooropa came out in '93.
Upon first listening, Zooropa sounded identical to the original 1993 CD, at least to my ears. Based solely on those A/B comparison, I had assumed the discs were the same. However, when comparing the tracks of the old and new CDs in a wave editor, I could see that there were some slight differences in certain areas of certain songs, mainly in terms of loudness and dynamics. In listening to those specific areas, I could hear the differences, but only in those specific areas. Elsewhere, the tracks sound identical. Certainly, the differences on Zooropa are more subtle than those on Achtung Baby. Had I not had a visual aid to show me where the differences are, I would not have noticed them. I think under normal listening conditions, the differences will be imperceptible to most listeners.

The ONLY thing I could have asked for to improve this, was a different ZOO TV show than Sydney. Most fans already have that. We got almost 2 CD's worth of completely new stuff, collected all the remixes together (this was their first album with tons of remixes, which I am not too keen on, but whatever), plus 3 DVD's of new content.
I can see why they included Zooropa, but would have preferred a double CD release of that on it's own, like Boy/October/War got.

This. To me, the JT set was very well-done. Great bonus material on the second disc, an unreleased live show on DVD, some interesting inserts, etc. The AB set seems filled to the brim with unncessary, redundant material. I would have kept the obvious b-sides and demo versions (in their untouched form), and focused more on unreleased live material. Like others have commented, I understand the link that Zooropa has to Achtung Baby, but I would have preferred it to be treated as a separate 2-disc special edition release.

I got the Tribute CD from Q Magazine. Ordered it from someone on eBay. I like it a lot. Takes a lot to get used to different versions of such familiar songs. Many of the groups take a very minimalistic approach (NIN, Snow Patrol). The Killers version of Ultra Violet is awesome. Garbage did some great work. A damn good CD overall, though I need to listen to it more to really absorb it.

For you music fans, Universal Music is releasing the U2: From the Sky Down documentary on Blu-ray and DVD on 1/24 (it's already available internationally). The film was directed by Davis Guggenheim, and examines the making of the band's landmark 1991 Achtung Baby album. It's previously only been available as part of their recent (and expensive) Achtung Baby anniversary "Super" and "Uber" deluxe edition CD/Vinyl box sets.

I got to see From the Sky Down over the weekend due to Showtime's free preview. Great doc, I liked how they set up the mind set of the band at the time, coming off the high of Joshua Tree and lows of Rattle and Hum. The moment you hear the birth of One in the Mysterious Ways demo was magical, love to see those moments of creation.
