Maybe that's why I don't like any of those genres. (well I liked some glam metal, which had the nonsensical, anachronistic "hair metal" term slapped on it well after it's peak. No one called it that back in the 80s. Sorry, that's just a pet peeve of mine, new thread? ).

Unpopular opinion: although I respect their place in metal history, I've never been a fan of Priest. I like a few of their songs (gotta love Painkiller) but that's it, they don't really do anything for me.

Pantera is still the best thing any of them ever did. Could never really get into any of Phil's solo stuff. Damageplan was forgettable. Hellyeah was garbage.

Sort of makes me think of The Smiths, where, after they broke up, neither Morrissey nor Marr did anything that lived up to their previous group.

Supergroups are seldom the sum of their parts. It always sounds good on paper, but the final product is generally underwhelming.

To me Down is way better than the best Pantera stuff and Superjoint Ritual was fantastic as well. He also has a black metal band called Scour which is surprisingly good too.

I’m in the same boat. They don’t make bad stuff, but it’s just not memorable to me. I can see why it was during the period it was released though.

I don't dislike Bon Jovi. I like a lot of their songs. Hell, I actually enjoy Nickleback more than them, but I understand the hate NB gets. I just think Bon Jovi are powder puff 80's rock music that gets more acclaim than they should. At least Nickleback started a whole sub-genre of rock that spun off a ton of imitators. Bon Jovi just rode the coattails of Hair Metal and made it bigger than other, more deserving bands in my opinion. But as I said, just my opinion.

I know way more people who love BJ than hate them...heh heh.

And I look forward to watching the new documentary. I hope it is decent.

To me, W.A.S.P always felt like an underrated band. It seems like they were blown off because of their look an stage antics. There were probably one of the better Metal Bands back in the day. I always enjoyed their music and and their shows were fun, I saw them open for KISS.

The recordings of some of the W.A.S.P. albums seemed under produced to me, but I always thought they were a good live. Kind of the opposite of some other bands who had well produced records but I don't care for live (I'm looking at you RATT and Motley Crue).

Ratt suuuuuucks LIVE. I was so disappointed and BORED. Same with Guns N Roses. I have a soft spot for Motley Crue though. I enjoyed their 80's shows.

WASP always struck me as the epitome of the b-list 80s metal band. They were good at being a metal band, but just didn't have what it took to really cross over into the mainstream. Guys weren't pretty enough to attract the right types of girls to the group, the subject matter of their songs was too dark and heavy metally to appeal to the jocks and preppies. They were the kind of group where if a b-movie needed a metal band playing in a club or wanted a metal song on their soundtrack, WASP was one of the go-to bands.

I'd compare them to Twisted Sister, except Twisted Sister pulled off a one-hit wonder with "We're Not Gonna Take It," and managed to ride that for a while.

WASP's s/t debut was a solid album, I'm still a fan since it first came out, and I'm also a big fan of The Headless Children. Their other albums also have plenty of good songs, but not as consistant as the two I mentioned. I still have my original 12" single of Animal (Fuck Like a Beast) as well, too bad that Capitol didn't allow the song's inclusion on the debut LP.

I remember my Dad and other parents losing their minds when this came out. It think this was one of the final straws that sent that parents coalition group over the edge. I know all the churches in my area lost their shit over it and the pentagram on Motley Crue's Shout At The Devil. There was some type of newsletter that would get sent to churches in our area and that was how you could see and find out about releases like this. Because you certainly couldn't easily find it on store shelves in Alabama.

I have the first several WASP albums on vinyl... W.A.S.P., The Last Command, Inside the Electric Circus, Live In the Raw, and Headless Children. (Thank you, Columbia Record and Tape Club!)

Pretty decent run of albums. Never bought anything after those, except for CDs reissues of the first couple of albums with extra tracks.

Yeah, that single did not get a US release when it first came out in 1984, Music For Nations released it in the UK (that's the version I have, bought it at the local headshop that sold a lot of import metal and punk albums, I miss that place!) and Banzai Records released it in Canada. It didn't make it to the US until Restless put it out the following year.

And yep, the single was on the PMRC's "Filthy Fifteen" list. I was always tickled to see Mercyful Fate on the list, although I owned the album that the song was from (Melissa) they weren't exactly a well known band compared to most of the artists on the list, pretty underground. Wonder who stumbled upon that one? Oh and there were much worse songs out there in 1985.

Yeah, I always thought it was kind of funny how the PMRC doled out their outrage.

On the one hand, you have songs like "Darling Nikki" and "She Bop" that were either hits or on really popular mainstream albums. Yeah, that's one thing.

Then they'll single out certain songs like "Possessed" by Venom, which is actually pretty typical of their output, and probably even on the milder side of occultish offensiveness and "Let Me Put My Love into You" by AC/DC which is just a typical AC/DC number.

And then they went out of their way to promote stuff like The Mentors who was just obscure as fuck until they read the lyrics to "Golden Showers" into the congressional record and made them more famous and infamous than they ever would have been on their own. Or given free promotion to the WASP "Animal (Fuck Like a Beast)" 12" single that would have gone unnoticed by all but a handful of metalheads.

I remember when I was ten begging my dad to let my buy Motley Crue's Shout At The Devil on cassette after he saw the song title "Bastard" on it. He relented and then by the time Appetite For Destruction came out my parents didn't give a shit anymore.

I remember reading an interview with Nikki Sixx where his label told them they were going to put a parental advisory sticker on their new album. Sixx was like "fuck yeah, you just sold an extra two million copies by doing that" or something.

When I was a kid, nobody ever told me I couldn't listen to this or watch that movies, and I watched any kind of movies I wanted to listened to any kind of music I wanted to. Been watching R-rated movies like Alien and Halloween and listening to a steady stream of devil music since I was eight or nine.

And I've also never attended even one regular church service in my entire life.

Graduated high school and college with 3.8 GPAs, I've never been arrested, and don't have a half a dozen bastard kids with different baby mamas running around.

So all of those super strict parents who wouldn't let their kids listen to Motley Crue or watch Fast Times at Ridgemont High when they were in the third and fourth grades basically just threw their kids' best years of their lives into the trash.
