I like every song on that album (yes, even Odyssey). I remember back in the mid 80s it was impossible to find as KISS had it deleted from their catalog. I finally found a Dutch import on vinyl in the late 80s and the album blew me away (since replaced with the limited edition vinyl released a couple years ago). I'd honestly put it in my top five favorite KISS albums.

Agreed, it's the same with all art, it's subjective.

And "In My House" doesn't seem much different than mainstream stuff from the 60s and 70s that you'd hear from bands like Fleetwood Mac or The Eagles.
I can guess why the PMRC didn't like We're Not Gonna Take It.

They recognized an attack on themselves when they heard it.

Yeah, I remember back in the mid-80s that that album was impossible to find. I'd see "Music from The Elder" on lists of KISS albums but no stores carried it. I wondered if it wasn't some kind of foreign/import-only release. Kind of surprised to find out that it was, in fact, released domestically. Being pre-internet, the existence of the album was a tantalizing mystery. Outside of the title, I had no idea what it was about or what any of the songs on it were.

I sort of came of age at the ass-end of KISS's 70s popularity, and I was only about six when "Music from The Elder" came out, so I missed its release entirely.

After buying Dynasty in 1979, I stopped buying KISS records for awhile, as by that time I was in high school and KISS definitely wasn't "cool". I got back into them around 1985 when Asylum came out, and I tried picking up the albums I missed. Lick it Up and Animalize were easy, and I managed to find a European import of Unmasked, which ended up becoming another favorite of mine. But Elder eluded me, it was indeed released domestically (on the other hand, the follow up compilation with four new songs, Killers, was import only) but I think it was pulled from the catalog not long after very poor sales. Finally stumbled upon a European import, listened to it the first time and was like "Whoa!". When KISS albums started getting released on CD in the 80s, they didn't want to release Elder in the format at all, but due to fan demand, it was finally the last CD in their catalog at the time to be released. I bought that too.

Found some of the only live appearances for the album. These are from Fridays on Jan 15, 1982

Re: What's your Unpopular Music Opinion?

Yep, those are great (although Paul was really struggling with the falsetto parts of The Oath). They are indeed the only live performances of Elder songs from the era (the few other appearances were lip-synced). The album sold so poorly the planned tour was cancelled, so this is all we got. These can also be found on one of the Kissology DVD sets.

Kiss is THE absolute worst popular rock band that has ever existed.

Re: What's your Unpopular Music Opinion?

My unpopular music opinion is that I'm really not a music guy. I like some stuff I like, but I generally am not into the medium in general. I don't connect with the vast majority of it.
Also, of the music I love, I'm a big fan of Nicki Minaj, although I actually haven't listened to much after The Pink Print, for various reasons (but mostly because I just am not pressed to seek it out)

(feel free to connect me not being into music and me liking Nicki Minaj into a joke of your choice)

You sound like one of the boomers on the Steve Hoffman music forum. So much KISS hate, and Beatles worship, with those guys.

Which is funny because The Beatles had a massive influence on Gene and Paul (which they have publicly professed a million times) and you can tell it in many of their songs, especially the early ones.

I love both groups.

Here's an unpopular opinion. I don't like The Rolling Stones. Never have and I guess I never will. I like a handful of their hits, and I have tried to listen to their albums but find them dull as dishwater. An entire album listen by them is a chore for me. I just find my mind wandering as I am bored as shit while listening. I have never understood their vast appeal. I tried to listen to Tattoo You the other day and wanted to rip my ears off by the end of it. Jagger's vocals are just annoying.

Oh, and Mick Jagger grosses me out.

As do I. And yeah, The Beatles were a huge influence on Gene and Paul (along with the early album songs, some of the songs on Gene's 1978 solo album are practially Beatles love letters, e.g. See You Tonight, Mr. Make Believe).

I'm with you on this one as well. I like a few of their songs, e.g. Paint it Black and Jumping Jack Flash, but there's no entire album of theirs that I like or would want to listen to.

I grew up listening to the Rolling Stones as my Dad played them a lot. Plus the Tattoo You tour was my very first concert. Second concert was Kiss on the Lick It Up tour.

Re: What's your Unpopular Music Opinion?

I actually did see the Stones once, on their Steel Wheels tour (I do like the song Mixed Emotions). I thought "why not, they are getting a bit old or could break up and I might not get many more chances to see them live at this point". That was nearly 35 years ago.

Don't get me started on those fuckers!

Everything with those guys is just nostalgia, nostalgia, nostalgia! Just chasing the dragon that reminds them of their youth when they didn't have as many worries - or so they thinks, as human memory mostly blots out the bad stuff.

Which reminds me of my other unpopular opinion/rant - most people aren't actually music fans, but fans of nostalgia, mostly listening to things they're already familiar with that reminds them of better times.

I seek out new music, and while I like Led Zeppelin fine, I'd rather gouge out my ears than listen to Stairway again - even the music of my youth - it's fine, I still like it, but I don't need to hear it over and over. That's why I'm constantly on the prowl for new music. Sure, a lot of it might be from the same bands, and it might be similar sounding shit, but fuck, at least it's new!

I see record collections and why does everyone need to own Dark Side of the Moon and Rumours? Why aren't you sick of that yet? Listen to something new! There's so much out there that you'll like if you put in just a tiny bit of effort. Unless you really just want to be transported to a "simpler time". Which wasn't actually "simple", you were just too young to know any better.

Re: What's your Unpopular Music Opinion?

I've started using this forum to find new music (esp the sequitor thread).. Also, I decided to pay for Youtube premium, and some of their suggestions have been pretty good. I used to rely on my kids for new music, but we don't have much car time now that they're adults. When they were young teens, it was easy to find new music just by letting them play theirs while I drove them places.

Same. I don't hate them, but I've never understood their appeal other than a few songs (those two included). They were my ex-husband's favorite band, though,, so I heard them a lot. I think Mick Jagger is gross, too. That Jerry Hall left Bryan Ferry for him kind of baffles me, but who knows how anyone really is behind closed doors. I actually think she's kind of gross too.

Totally agree. Some people seem stuck in time regarding the music they listen to, my father for example is firmly stuck in the 1950s, even the Beatles are too new for him. I love seeking out new music and bands (mostly hard rock and metal). I can't imagine listening to just the same songs over and over, it's wonderful discovering new songs and bands that really speak to me.

When I first heard "Another Brick In The Wall", I was young enough to have thought it was kinda funny in a manner similar to Alice Cooper's "Schools Out". Like a silly "anthem". So initialy I dismissed Pink Floyd, thinking they were some joke/parody type band.

Sometime later I picked up a Dark Side of the Moon vinyl at a then-local garage sale back in the day. That's when I realized they were not just a silly joke/parody type band. When I first tried playing a bass guitar, the first riff I attempted to decipher was the beginning of the song "Money".

In the case of Fleetwood Mac, I never had Rumors. Even today, I don't think I would immediately recognize any songs from it.

The only Fleetwood Mac album I ever listened to more than once, was Tango In The Night. It seems to be largely forgotten since its 1987 release date. It was another title I found at a garage sale for a dollar sometime in the 1990s, which turned out to be a great album. (ie. I don't know what Fleetwood Mac sounded like prevously).

Re: What's your Unpopular Music Opinion?

Nostalgia for all things 80s, especially music, is way overblown. And 80s movie songs are THE WORST. If I never hear Don’t You Forget About Me, Danger Zone, Eye of the Tiger, Take My Breath Away, Nothing’s Gonna Stop Us Now, Against All Odds, Maniac, Flashdance (What a Feeling), Let’s Hear it for the Boy, I’ve Had The Time of my Life, or If You Leave ever again, it will be too soon.

Every Rule has exceptions. These include Cat People, Holiday Road and Purple Rain.
