No, if they had the Fox mentality down, they would have bumped the show all over the schedual, underpromoted it, and killed it off without so much of a fanfair.
Well, they did do that in Season 4. First they moved it from Monday night(where it played for all of Season 3, I believe) to Sunday night opposite Alias. Then halfway through the year, they put it on Wednesday opposite The West Wing. Fortunately the show and its fans weathered the storm and the WB caved and gave it an entire 5th season in the same timeslot.

Makes no logical sense. They have a show that they renew, despite lacking ratings. It actually gains viewers, then they axe it anyway?

My Wednesday night of TV has been all but axed. It consisted of Smallville, Angel, and Karen Sisco. While I like Smallville, I only watched it because it began my night. My two favorite shows on TV have been axed

I really do wish someone would open fire in public on all of these suits that run the companies. They're all about business, not storytelling.

Today it feels like I've been to a funeral, you get to know characters over the years, of cource it's just a tv show, but you get into that escapism, so today was like a funeral, we dug graves for these characters and watched the dust slowly cover them.

This is sad.

While I stopped enjoying the series sometime last year (and only really consider it good up until mid season 3) I still would watch it on occasion this year.

Sad to see it go, and I hope that Whedon will make another Buffyverse show that can fit in a nice niche timeslot on a nice niche night on a nice niche network so he can have total creative control.

I would rather he leave the Buffyverse alone, and develop a whole new universe. I would love another Firefly type show from him.

Yeah, that might be a good idea too. Though I never saw Firefly. Whatever it is, he needs to go to a small network that'll give him freedom. And he needs to be hands on like he was in Buffy seasons 1-3... you know, directing and writing every few episodes and taking a bigger part in script editing and such. Because damn, it sure shows when he leaves it to other people.

A message from Joss Whedon:
Some of you may have heard the hilarious news. I thought this would be a good time to weigh in. To answer some obvious questions: No, we had no idea this was coming. Yes, we will finish out the season. No, I don't think the WB is doing the right thing. Yes, I'm grateful they did it early enough for my people to find other jobs.

Yes, my heart is breaking.

When Buffy ended, I was tapped out and ready to send it off. When Firefly got the axe, I went into a state of denial so huge it may very well cause a movie. But Angel... we really were starting to feel like we were on top, hitting our stride -- and then we strode right into the Pit of Snakes 'n' Lava. I'm so into these characters, these actors, the situations we're building... you wanna know how I feel? Watch the first act of "The Body."

As far as TV movies or whatever, I'm not thinking that far ahead. I actually hope my actors and writers are all too busy. We always planned this season finale to be a great capper to the season and the show in general. (And a great platform for a new season, of course.) We'll proceed ahead as planned.

I've never made mainstream TV very well. I like surprises, and TV isn't about surprises, unless the surprise is who gets voted off of something. I've been lucky to sneak this strange, strange show over the airwaves for as long as I have. I don't FEEL lucky, but I understand that I am.

Thanks all for your support, your community, and your perfectly sane devotion. It's meant a lot. I regret nothing (except the string of grisley murders in the 80's -- what was THAT all about?) Remember the words of the poet:

"Two roads diverged in a wood, and I took the road less traveled by and they CANCELLED MY FRIKKIN' SHOW. I totally shoulda took the road that had all those people on it. Damn."

See you soon.

Hey, as much as I disliked Buffy for it's last few seasons, and only been very casual towards Angel, I have always respected Whedon for doing what he wants. Knowing that the show's decline (in my eyes) wasn't caused by some studio ****ing things up was oddly comforting...

Well, in the case of two of the characters, we watched them become dust. I'm still bummed out about the cancellation, I really hope this isn't serious but I HIGHLY doubt it.

I am sad to hear this

I look forward to the rest of the season and with sadness to the years after with no more Buffy universe characters to keep me company.

Well this really sucks as Angel is my favorite show even if this season hasn't been the greatest. Oh well i will own them all on dvd to revisit. Hopefully the rest of the season ends with a bang and clears up the Shanshu prophecy and W&H series arc but its doubtful.

I feel sorry for Joss. Two of his shows have gotten the axe in around a one year time frame (Firefly and now Angel) and Buffy ended due to the time came to end it on a high note (that and SMG didn't want to sign on for additional seasons).

Here's hoping good luck to the Firefly movie and any other shows or movies Joss Whedon wants to give us in the future. The man is one of the most creative and hardworking people in the industry and it shows.

Na, Joss won't change his ideas how to end this season as he had said so, and wrap up Angel definately with the final ending, it would be blatently rushed, he will leave the season being a feeling of wow, they did that a bit early feeling, he will leave a capper and leave ideas to possibly be used for a movie or tv movie, the season will be played like he intended, if he knew this was the last season when season five started, then perhaps it would be different, it was WB who told him to make changes, those changes led to more things needing to be fleshed out, so season five will be like any other season with it's finale, but perhaps a finale and a caper of something left.

I liked how Joss gave a little jab to the concept of reality tv with his "who gets voted off" comment. I am getting sick of seeing all these good scripted shows with nice storylines and characters get axed in favor of making another Real world knock off catered to those with short attention spans.

As am I. Unfortunately, millions and millions of people watch these shows and television is ultimately a business.

But I keep up my boycott of reality television in the hopes that others will follow suit

Joss needs to work with a network like HBO where he can do short seasons that rely on long term story arcs, instead of having to worry about making individual episodes stand alone for the newbies.

He'd also get to even put a bit more of an edge on things without having to worry as much about sensors from broadcast networks.

If HBO would do a series as strange as Carnivale, maybe they'd let Joss do an strange adult series

Yep. I'm a little surprised some of the smarter TV people like Joss who toil for the smaller networks (or even major ones) don't go over to HBO. Granted, HBO would actually have to want him, but it seems like a great match. The HBO brand name alone seems to get people talking, and I would think a good writer on a dedicated network would produce good results. Less need to bother with a major network and have the show canceled in 8 episodes like on Fox.

I too would love to see Joss do something for HBO. Imagine how Angel and Buffy could have looked had it been allowed to present the stories at a Mature/R rated level? We probably would have seen Faith in her B-Day suit at one point.

OK, that is enough reason right there. Where's the petition already?

Well, after a little bit of mourning, I think I'm cool with this now. The way some people were talking, I thought there were fewer episodes left, but we're less than 2/3 through the season, so there's still plenty of Angel left.

Also, the current comic book rumor is that instead of taking over New X-men, Joss is actually going to be launching another X-men series titled Astonishing X-men, possibly in May. Between this and the possible Firefly movie, maybe Angel getting cancelled isn't such a bad thing. There's always the possible Ripper mini-series too.

I Keep thinking, I'm a fan of some films I wish had sequels, like Big Trouble In Little China, I'll always love the film, if there was five Angel films, no tv series, I would think 5 films of 2 hours long, 10 hours total would be alot, but 5 seasons of 22 episodes, 110 episodes, many episodes of a cinematic quality, I've seen season one episodes so many times because they are really well done for stand alone episodes, like mini movies, very much like great episodes of X files, and it's not ironic, Howard Gordan producer of X files worked on Angel, plus 24, the cinematic feel of films graced this series, that makes it great in repeat viewing, I also think if there's any more Angel in tv movies or feature film, it should be done within 3 years, as Angel never ages, but David Boreanze does, and he's played the character for eight years, 5 on Angel, 3 on Buffy. Either those movie events WB talked about, or a feature film featuring Angel, Spike, Buffy, Faith, the ultimate fight, maybe a trilogy that ties up these character's journeys of battle, as evil never dies, this current gang just does the job for good now. Be good not to wait too long, Buffy and Faith will age well and are suppose too, but Spike and Angel don't, so if there any more output from this universe it should be done within 3 or 4 years before we notice too much age difference etc.

Sorta off-topic in a way...but...

Is Dark Shadows any good? The TV seresi from 1965-1971? Ive heard so many good things about it, and with Anel ending, and the new Dark Shadows starting up...I may want a little vamp action before that...

I feel for ya. Ed is gone, Angel is gone, Friends is gone....they're killing off all of my shows. I'm down to Gilmore Girls and Everwood. And Gilmore Girls dvds start to hit in a couple months time.

I don't quite get the WB's rationale -

By canceling Angel to make room for Dark Shadows, they've pissed off the rabid Whedonites to the point where they're probably not going to watch that show. Angel's fans are the target audience for Dark Shadows.

I get that they wouldn't cancel Smallville, Gilmore Girls, Everwood or 7th Heaven. But Angel's numbers are also better than One Tree Hill's. Angel's viewership is up 11 percent from this time last year.

Suits. What can you do?
