Joss Whedon, co-creator of The WB's canceled vampire series Angel, told TV Guide Online that he doubts the series could move to UPN next year, much as its predecessor show Buffy the Vampire Slayer did after the frog network staked it. "We've talked about the possibility, but it's a long shot," Whedon told the site. A UPN spokeswoman had no comment for TV Guide, but an Angel insider told the site that executives at Angel's production studio Twentieth Century Fox are putting together a proposal for UPN.

Whedon, meanwhile, reiterated that he'd love to have Buffy star Sarah Michelle Gellar make a guest appearance in the Angel series finale, though Gellar has already said she's not interested in appearing on Angel this season. "We'll put out some feelers [again] to see if there's some interest there," Whedon told the site. "We'd certainly love to have her." Gellar is currently in Tokyo shooting The Grudge, a supernatural horror film.

Since it's the same company, why doesn't Fox just put it on Fox?

Not nearly enough ratings to be a Fox show.

Actually, it might make a good replacement for Tru Calling. Plus it would get Faith back on... eh? eh?

Actually, its sounding like Tru Calling might even be back for next year. I was thinking if it had been cancelled, Faith could have had a guest appearance. If they can't get SMG, they should at least get Faith on the finale.

Rating might go up just because it's on FOX instead of WB. FOX shows have higher average rating than WB. Anyone know why that is?

James Marsters left the following message on his official forum:

Unfortunately, emailing networks or posting in online petitions is a waste of time. As soon as they start getting emails, they set up spam filters to delete the mail and they don’t ever see what comes in. Waiting around for somebody to organize something is wasting precious time--organized campaigns are going to be great but here’s something you can do NOW.

If you want to actually do something that actually might--MIGHT--help to get another season for Angel...

DO THIS TOMORROW

1. Go and buy some postcards that show scenes from your city. Tourist postcards. Postcards that have the name of your town or city or area of the country on them. You don’t need anything fancy, just something that will show immediately where you are located so they know this is coming from all over.

2. Write a short message on the postcard in your own words saying that you want Angel to be renewed and support the show. Keep it positive. Don’t be insulting. Don’t be abusive.

3. Address the postcard to one of the people on the list of addresses in this message. Levin may ignore the cards coming into the WB, but the media outlets will see there’s a story in this and publicize it. The names on the list are in order of importance so start at the top and send as many postcards as you want to (or can afford to send).

4. Go and get at least six friends who probably aren’t reading this on the internet but would be willing to send postcards, and get them to do the same thing.

5. DO IT TOMORROW! Speed of response is what counts along with the size of the response. Don’t wait for instructions from some group. Just DO IT.

Here are the addresses to mail your cards to:

TNT is the best possibility to pick up Angel since they’ve gotten good ratings with the reruns and do some original programming.

Beverly Hills, CA 90213

And to send cards supporting the cast and crew:

Angel Productions
20th Century Fox
PO Box, 900
Beverly Hills
CA, 90213-0900

Now, if you actually want to accomplish something, make some news, and maybe, just maybe, get a sixth season for Angel...

DO THIS TOMORROW AND DON’T PUT IT OFF!

Basically it's the same message some websites are saying, but James likes the buffy verse as a fan as well as wanting a day job.

Yeah, agreed, my mistake.

No series is having a much better season than Angel (WB, 9 p.m. ET/PT), as witness tonight's funny, creepy outing about a children's show that steals children's souls while upholding "a certain standard of quality edutainment." The best joke is on Angel, who is turned into a perpetually scowling puppet.

It's a great episode, which makes the news that WB is canceling the show that much harder to take. Still, you can't blame the network. It has to make room for the next Tarzan, Birds of Prey or Fearless — or, even better, for yet another attempt to clone Dawson's Creek.

Everyone's having a go at WB

I didn't even find out about Angel being cancelled until Thursday, and I haven't been able to comment until now. (So, chances are no-one's reading this, but...)

In a season where the ratings are UP, it's really surprising that the WB would cancel Angel. I've really enjoyed this season, and obviously the lighter tone and stand alone episodes helped the ratings - it's been a more "fun" season and the ratings reflected that.

So why cancel it now? Lots of theories abound on this thread, many of them very possibly correct. Still, it doesn't make sense to cancel Angel and keep shows with lower ratings (I know, Angel costs a lot more per hour, but still - with more viewers you get a better platform to advertise your other shows).

I would love to see Angel get a sixth season on UPN or TNT or even Fox for that matter, but I'm not sure how likely that really is.

Angel and The Shield are the only new shows I watch anymore. The Shield only has 13 or so new episodes each year. That leaves a lot of time with no new shows to watch. At least I've got my DVD box sets of Buffy, Angel, Babylon 5, Stargate SG-1, etc, to watch.

I'll keep my fingers crossed that someone picks this up for next season, but I'm not getting my hopes up at this point.

I'll be sending out postcards maybe tomorrow to a few of those addresses. I'm mentioning that the only two shows I watch are Smallville (occasionally) and Angel, and I only watch Smallville because it's before Angel. If they cancel Angel I'll have no reason to watch the WB, although I'll continue to buy the Angel DVD sets.

If you like the show, actually take the time to send at least one postcard! Two or three is better.

FYI, From the IMDB...

----------------------------------------------------------------------
Fans Protest the End of 'Angel'

Fans of Buffy, The Vampire Slayer spin-off Angel have joined forces on the internet to protest the axing of the supernatural show. Last week, bosses at America's Warner Bros (WB) TV network announced Angels fifth and current series would be its final, which has prompted more than 45,000 Angel devotees to sign an online petition at Petitiononline.Com to keep the drama alive. And a representative at WB admits the fans' efforts may not be in vain, explaining, "It (helped) Roswell. It was as good as gone and the big fan campaign brought it back."
--------------------------------------------------------------------

So keep those postcards and hairgel coming, folks!

Angel's Fate Seems Grim

David Fury, executive producer of The WB's canceled vampire series Angel, told SCI FI Wire that he was doubtful the show will migrate to UPN next year, though he confirmed that talks are underway. "There were and are conversations going on with UPN," Fury said in an interview at the Wolfram & Hart Annual Revue fan charity ball on Feb. 21.

Fury added, "But in all likelihood they don't have the financial wherewithal to continue the series. It's less expensive than Buffy was for them, but trying to bring a show that's ... going to be going into its sixth season, it's not really financially responsible for them to pick up a show that doesn't really have much of a future beyond one more season." UPN picked up two more seasons of Angel's predecessor series, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, after The WB canceled it.

Fury added that he wasn't optimistic about future Angel movies of the week, which The WB has held out as a possible continuing venue for the show's mythology. "I think there's some time [that] would have to pass before we'd seriously start considering it," Fury said. Angel co-creator Joss Whedon will soon be heavily involved in a proposed feature film based on his canceled SF western series Firefly, Fury added. "Joss' response to that offer was, 'Who's going to make [an Angel movie] for you?' Because he's going to be off doing a motion picture, Firefly, and he'll be consumed with that for some time. And presumably everybody else on the show will have moved on to other projects, although we'd love to continue to work together, and we will try to, I'm sure, in our various capacities. But as far as the movies go, I don't expect you'll hear anything announced about that for another year. And by that time, again, everybody will have moved on, actors and writers. And it just may be a hard thing to actually realize."

As for Angel's series-ending story arc, Fury said, he doubted that Buffy star Sarah Michelle Gellar will be making a guest appearance. "Well, that's entirely up to Sarah, and frankly, I think she's out of the country [in Japan] doing a movie [The Grudge], ... so I'm very doubtful that she's going to be able to come back. And the problem with her coming back anyway is that it sort of invites closure for Spike and/or Angel, which I'm not sure we ever want to do. I think it's better never to quite know. ... Whatever it is, it's not going to be satisfying to somebody. So I think I prefer the idea that both men are still holding out hope and maybe it's something for an Angel movie someday, or a Buffy movie." Angel airs Wednesdays at 9 p.m. ET/PT.

Not to me. To me that is total disrespectful bullshit. They want to be able to air it when it is convenient instead of letting it progress with genuine story arcs as a successful weekly series. Lame, lame, lame. Faced with this idea or nothing, I'd rather just have a resolution to the series and close the book on the Buffy-verse.

The thing is, there might not be the resolution some of you are looking for. Joss Whedon has said he plans to wrap up this season the same way he planned to before learning of the cancellation. While the finale for this season can function as a series finale for now, this isn't how Joss wanted to end the series. The series was building up to the Wolfram & Hart apocalypse and a final showdown with the Senior Partners. That certainly won't happen this season and it may be very difficult to get everyone back to wrap it up in the future.

Can't be done, and to do it in such a rush would make it seem the sudden canceleation effected the storylines, Joss would rather leave things in the air then to rush and cheapen the ending because of WB's decision to end it after the 5th season, the best bet would be feature films.

I agree with the way Joss will do it, end this season like he planned, and leave anything else to a future production, Buffy and Angel are too popular for it not to in some format, hopefully feature film.

Yeah, Joss will end this season as he always planned too, I don't think he has time for Angel tv movies or mini series, as he's doing FireFly, and it gets difficult to bring back everyone, I think the best bet would be a Angel or Buffy movie done the line, since Firefly got a movie which was a canceled tv show, it would be reasonable to expect a movie.

Some bad news:

http://www.saveangel.org/

Fox Network: No Plans to Take Angel

A representative for the FOX network today discounted suggestions of an interest in picking up ANGEL for its Fall line-up. "While we agree ANGEL is a remarkable series, we have no plans to bring the show to FOX," said the senior spokesperson.

20th Century Fox Television and Joss Whedon's Mutant Enemy, the production companies behind ANGEL, are said to be floating a proposal to UPN for that network to acquire the series. According to spokesperson for the production company, "[UPN] could be a potential network home for the show, so you may want to have your colleagues direct your efforts towards Dawn Ostroff and her team at UPN."

Fox are a bunch of twats, they agree it's a great series, it's selling well for them on dvd, but no proper reason.

UPN seems the last cling of hope, or if WB bows to the criticism, which I'm sure Angel has increased to get them to reconsider.

And:

From:
http://www.buffy-vs-angel.com/news/n...t_from=&ucat=&

Quote:
Angel axed to make way for repeats
WB President, Jordan Levin has found himself constantly defending his decision since announcing that the network giant was axing Angel from its schedule. Under a huge amount of pressure from fans and the media, Levin said, “We have a lot of veteran shows that are aging, and we're going to have to make room for new programs."

One of these new programs includes Dark Shadows, a gothic soap opera about a vampire that first aired in 1966 but was axed five years later due to poor ratings. The WB has high hopes for the series and has recruited the talent of John Wells, better known for his work on dramas such as ER and The West Wing. But the audience it is aimed at are the fans of other vampire shows such as Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Angel who have been made to feel alienated following the networks decision. One WB viewer said, “Well the WB just lost me in watching their new show. I would have watched it because I love vampire shows and maybe I would have liked this one, but dropping Angel for this? They will never see me on that station again unless it is for Angel.”

Levin continued to go further into explaining why the show about the soulful vampire was not renewed for a sixth season. He said, "We need to create timeslots where we can repeat shows."

So it would seem that a new series of Angel has been turned away in order to create time slots for repeats. A viewer of the WB said, “I don’t want to see constant repeats on my television! I want something new not something old and tired. The new season of Angel has been a breath of fresh air. I was looking forward to seeing the sixth season.”

The decision from the large network may not have been the right one especially if the ratings are anything to go by. The WB are currently showing repeats of Smallville on Sundays where it fails to top 3 million viewers with audiences preferring to tune in to never-seen-before shows on other stations. But fans of the show about Clark Kent’s early years are already showing their disapproval for the new series which is also currently being aired. They have described the episodes as, “poorly written.” One viewer said, “I hope the future is a brighter one for Smallville, and includes more clever scripts than the past two weeks have demonstrated.”

So while the network fails to hold the interest of long-time fans of its shows, the main aim from the WB appears to be to draw in new audiences in an attempt to climb the ladder in the ratings battle. As Levin continued to talk of the reasons why Angel was axed, he said, “The show had a loyal core following, but it didn't have a tremendous amount of new audience upside." One has to question the decision from Levin to buy the rights to Dark Shadows which is from the same genre as Angel - opting to take "new" over "already established."

The head of the WB remains adamant that the decision was the right one and maintains that, “This isn't about the WB bailing out on one of its top shows."

It is not just the fans who are baffled by the decision from the WB to cancel what the President of the network admits is “one of its top shows,” but people in the entertainment industry are also scratching their heads.

Jeph Loeb, who co-developed Buffy: The Animated Series with Angel creator, Joss Whedon said, “All the people who were involved in the show from the very beginning really gave it their all. I don't think there are any lazy episodes. They put a lot of heart and effort into a very difficult premise and came up with a show that I'm a very big fan of. I'll miss the characters and I'll miss the writing, because I think it was very smart."

Former Buffy the Vampire Slayer writer, Drew Greenberg added, “Why was that decision made? The show is doing so well, and they were having such a good year. It's a decision I don't understand."

Even Smallville creator, Al Gough fails to make sense of the saga. “I don't know why they cancelled Angel,” said Gough who may well be worried about the future of his own show on the WB network. “With Smallville on at 8pm and Angel at 9pm, we had a really good block of programming and a lot of fan crossover between the two shows. Considering the ratings and the quality of the show this year, we were shocked that they cancelled it."

USA Today’s well-respected Critic, Robert Bianco recently wrote, “No series is having a much better season than Angel.” He went on to say that the decision to cancel the show was hard to take.

He's got to be feeling the wrath over this and it shows.

I agree. It's the same attitude I had with Farscape... leave it as planned (even with a cancellation) and finish the story down the road whenever you can.

The way TV on DVD is selling, I wouldn't be surprised to see them do a direct-to-DVD movie(s) to tie up the Buffy-verse down the road. Probably more economical than a theatrical release.

The problem with continuing the franchise is that it pretty much all rests on SMG's shoulders, and she seems reluctant to play the character again.

Unless we can get a "Faith" series -- which I would love to see, but it's probably doubtful it will hapen -- that's about the only hope we have of ever seeing more of the Buffyverse. I don't think a theatrical movie can get made without SMG's involvement because the other characters just don't have the marquee value that Buffy does.

Other than that, I don't see much happening. Whedon didn't seem very interested in doing miniseries.

Maybe in a few years when Sarah's career tanks, she'll come crawling back to ME to recapture a bit of her former glory and we'll get a theatrical movie.
