What's the general consensus on Dawson's Creek? Worthy show to start watching (the series is to to 'start over' on TBS Friday) from the beginning, or waste of time?

Typically, I watch shows like Seinfeld, Frasier, Friends, The Shield, Without a Trace, Boomtown, Survivor, Amazing Race, CYE, Sopranos, CSI, 24, etc...

Is this a show worth watching? (and yes, I realize the series finale just aired)

Also, what's interesting is how Joey and Pacey reacted when Dawson's show "The Creek" has the soulmates choosing each other, which was not how it was in their "reality", so why would that ending "get to them"?

I just went through this process when TBS was showing 4 DC episodes/day, and will offer this:

If you can stop watching Dawson's Creek after the season 2 season finale, you're a stronger person than I.

I prefer the high school years more than the college years of Dawson's Creek. But I really do like season 1 and 2 the best. Season 3 just has that off-kilter feel to it for half a season before the new writers got the cadence of the characters down (since creator Kevin Williamson left the show after 2 seasons).

Count me among those who watched the first season and a little more, then gave up on it until last night. Had no idea the Series Finale was on until I flipped past the TV Guide channel around 9 o'clock. So I caught the last hour of it, just for closure sake. It kind of sucked though, because I had no idea how/why Jen was dying. I still have no idea who the father of her baby is. Had no idea who the gay guys were. And I have to agree, ever girl I know that has chosen the "Pacey" type guy over the "Dawson" type guy has ended up regretting it. Joey is in for some dissapointment. I guess it's realistic though.

So, who is the father of the baby?

Well, the "ignorant" viewer just isn't going to get as much out of this series finale as the fans, who are more familiar with the characters on the show, will get out of it. Sorry you didn't get much out of the show due to missing 5 years of shows. I fail to understand why you'd be so surprised the level of confusion by the finale given such self-professed ignorance of the shows post season 1.

Jen had a boyfriend knock her up, and then the boyfriend left her after learning she was pregnant. They never identified the boyfriend.

I didn't mean the show sucked. I meant, it sucked for me watching it because I wasn't aware of all the happenings.

As for Jen's "boyfriend", what an a-hole!

"Ignorant" as in uninformed, not knowing. This is different from being catagorized as being stupid, or dumb; which is not the case I was making.

I watch alot of the same shows as you and I enjoy it. I quit watching around halfway through season 3 when it originaly aired but was able to catch up on TBS and didn't think it was as bad as I did back then.

I watched every episode and it's "ok - good".
I liked it, and I watch a lot of shows you do.
However, I also like all the "teen comedy/dramas" as well which are missing from your list. Like Beverly Hills 90210 and the like.

The high school years are MUCH BETTER than the college years.
Season 1/2/and some of 3 were the best.

the 2 college years couldn't stand on their own, but most people were invested enough in the series to atleast keep watching to see what happens.
Not having the core 4 still together and revolving around that and having Joey break away and not even have the interactions with Dawson/Pacey (which is what the show revolved around) everyday just left the show somewhat un-interesting.

Don't get me wrong I still liked it, because I had interest in following all of the characters by then. But I can see how on it's own it wasn't that great.

There's no reason not to try it. It's not like you're going to get hopelessly addicted to it. I like certain aspects of the show, but the crappiness always seeps in. I'd say only watch it if you like the teen genre. I like the teen genre and I still didn't watch it most of the time it was on. I do tend to enjoy shows more in reruns for some reason and I have been enjoying the tbs reruns.

It kind of seemed sad and pathetic that Dawson couldn't get Joey in real life so he got her in his fantasy life. The Spielberg thing just made it worse, trying to force a happy ending for Dawson.

Sounds pretty close to what I usually watch. And I hate Dawson's Creek. But you are your own person, so give it a shot.

As always with a show I enjoy trashing, I haven't seen very much of "The Creek." Someday, maybe, I'll pick a show I can't stand and force myself to watch every episode ever made so my opinion is based on more than catching a random scene here and there. But with "Dawson," you've gotta take my thoughts with a grain of salt since they're not based on anywhere near the kind of in-depth familiarity with the program that the previous posters have displayed.

OK. With that out of the way, what I've seen of this show is downright putrid. To me, a coming-of-age series (isn't this what the show is supposed to be?) can only be successful if I can relate to it. And maybe it's because I am such a geek / dork / nerd, but I didn't feel Dawson or Pacey or any of the other characters represented me or my high school experiences at all. Practically everything I saw on the show (again, admittedly, it wasn't much before my clicker-finger was activated) was roughly as realistic as a "Buffy" episode. And that's only a slight exaggeration.

Then there's the dialogue.........oh boy. I've heard even defenders of the show remark that the words coming out of these high school kids' mouths sound like they were spoken (or even "written"? ) by a philosophy grad student. The best example of this is when I started casually watching an episode, and my vocab was expanded to incorporate the terms "verisimilitude," "quinquennium," "deracinate," and (my personal favorite) "muscovado."

And these words were all uttered by the same character.

And this was all before the opening credits had even finished.

Yeah, I'm exaggerating again. In sum, though, my experience with the show is minimal, and maybe it's because of my high school geekdom, but I couldn't relate to or identify with *anything* I ever witnessed on "Dawson's Creek."

Or maybe I just felt stupid because I didn't know what "quinquennium" meant.

I freaked my wife out last night. When P/J/D were in Pacey's jeep, and they said something about the triangle, as soon as Joey's cell phone rang I said, "and the triangle becomes a square." Of course, I had read it in the spoiler here.

I liked the ending. My wife was pissed that they killed of Jenn though.

I started watching in Season 2 because my wife watched it. I enjoyed making fun of it. Joked about how there could be a drinking game where when someone says something a high school kid would never say, you take a drink. If Dawson says it, you chug the whole thing. But I eventually fell in love with the show. The Dawson's Creek/Jack & Jill pairing was probably my favorite two hour combo ever. To me the show didn't feel the same when they started college, and it really dropped off this last season. But I still enjoyed it. I bought the first season on DVD last week and have been enjoying that. I've always been a sucker for cheese.

I don't remember exactly when Andie and Jack were introduced to the show, but it was within the first two seasons. The one guy that was talking to Jen for most of the episode is Jack, Andie's brother, and the other guy is Deputy Dogg, who is Pacey's brother.

Ok, so Joey wanted Pacey the whole time, but she was afraid she would lose Dawson over it. But when Dawson says that they will be friends forever because their friendship is beyond friendship and it transcends blah blah blah, Joey picks Pacey. But what about that blond chick roommate that went out with Pacey (along with other chicks Pacey has been with)? Joey didn't seem to care to much about the roommate. And didn't she declare her love for Eddie not to long ago?

Finally got to see it last night. Great ending to one of my favorite shows.

I loved the part where they're at the Ice House and recalling all those moments from "5-10" years ago.

The Jeep scene was priceless. I think Pacey was the one who mentioned the triangle first, then Christopher called and Dawson made the "square" remark.

And of course, I'm so glad that Joey picked Pacey.

I also thought Andie was going back...
